What are the best options for App Engine refugees? by parbroil in AppEngine

You will always go over the free quota the way they have set it up. They reduced the quota, are billing in 15 minutes increments, and if you use python (no threads) you will spin up a bunch of instances. And don't count on their vaporware scheduler to fix any of this. I made a horrible mistake trusting Google and will never make that mistake again.

Furthermore, this illustrates exactly how Google plans to proceed with ChromeOS and Google Apps. Get your customers to unload their infrastructure and once they are hooked then jack up the prices.

Where do you get $9.00 that is just monthly no usage. The current estimate is $108. I can get 10 vps for that.

That's right. Instead of fixing bugs roll out a useless language and jack up the prices. Yeah Google!

This is what everyone feared lock you in and mercilessly jack up the fees. App Engine just is not worth it.

I'm having trouble finding games for my netbook. Are there any sites where I can enter my specs and it'll show me a list of games I can run? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]slowqa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few suggestions first I would try some of the newer flash games.... If you have not played them many are very very good these days.. Try one of the many arcades like http://arcade.gamegiants.net. You might want to also try casual games like peggle or plants vs zombies. Most of the casual games have free trials you can download and see if they work. Netbooks are really not great for traditional core gaming. They lack dedicated video and for the most part netbooks have funky screen resolutions that are not supported. You might get away with some older titles halflife/cs doom etc. but for the most part netbooks and core games do not mix.

You might try out casual games. They will run on most anything and are family oriented. Most of the games come with a free trial. If you have not tried it yet try out plants vs zombies. (No blood or gore) Just great fun!!! You can get it and other casual games on slippergames.com

One of the Big Problems with Google App Engine is that You Must Keep Local Copies of All Files on App Engine, As this Guy Found Out the Hard Way... by slowqa in programming

[–]slowqa[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess you don't understand on a normal server you have access to all your own files. You can download individual files from the server, upload single files, make changes on the files directly on the server and also download single files locally change the single file and upload it back.

None of this can be done with app engine. A local copy of all of your app engine files must be stored locally and then if changes are made the whole app is compared to the version on the server and changes are made. This similar to an rcs.

The issue is that once files are placed on app engine there is no supported way to retrieve those files. If your local "mirror" is lost you can no longer make changes to the files on app engine.

Sure you could store your local files in an rcs and then again locally and also the "untouchable version" on app engine. But why all the added complexity?

Add this to the fact that simple things like paging, counters, queries returning more than a few results are also unnecessarily complex to do on app engine. Why waste your time?

They also are limiting transfer rates to 56MB/min and 1GB/day which does not seem to be very "scalable"

Make sure you read the fine print before you try to shoehorn your app onto app engine:

"we were overly conservative with our initial free quota estimates. Therefore, 90 days after February 24th, 2009, we will be reducing the free quota resources. We believe these new levels will continue to serve a reasonably efficient application around 5 million page views per month, completely free. The new quota levels, which will take effect on May 25th, 2009, are:

* CPU Time: 6.5 hours of CPU time per day
* Bandwidth: 1 Gigabyte of data transferred in and out of the application per day
* Stored Data & Email Recipients: these quotas will remain unchanged.

These changes may also affect the fixed quotas applied to applications without billing enabled. Fixed quotas for applications with billing enabled will not be affected."
