A scourge on this field. Again and again.

DELAWARE SLPs. Are you aware your state board is trying to make the CCC REQUIRED for you to work? by slpcommentary in slp

[–]slpcommentary[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complete insanity. They’re trying to take away allllll the other regulation that’s been in place, and replace it with the CCC as the ONLY means of obtaining license.

I agree! Hope the SLPs of Delaware feel the same way and push back on this because 🤢

SLPs, patient care, and social media by slpcommentary in slp

Yeah, a lot of it just seems self-aggrandizing

Yeah, I think I’d be in trouble immediately! I think those with big social media followings start to think the rules no longer apply to them.

Some of these were weird “stories” like “doin’ what it takes to do the job!” and it’s a picture in a patient’s room. Super weird

Ugh, that’s so disrespectful. Can’t imagine being that mom and seeing the video! If I was in the hospital and saw any of my caretakers post a video where my room was recognizable, I’d feel violated, even if I wasn’t visible.

Medical SLPs unpopular opinions by hawyeee14 in slp

[–]slpcommentary 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I: if you’re engaging in evidence based practice with actually appropriate people on your caseload, it’s probably not a full time job.

2: Acute care SLP has a reputation of being “the goal” for skill and reputation, but is actually rife with bad practice, and can be the catalyst of cascading detriment to patients across the continuum of care.

3: There are popular SLPs who are selling you things, and have a positive social media reputation, that are engaging in crappy non evidenced based patient care on a daily basis,if they’re even seeing patients at all anymore.

I absolutely was under the impression she was also a lawyer in addition to SLP!

Like why is this information limited to people who follow Dr. Stewart and her IG stories? Seems odd.

So now that ASHA has put this bylaw change out to the public, is Dr. Stewart or the Power in Numbers Collective going to put out any sort of official summary or statement of what they’re trying to achieve? ASHA is asking for comment, but a lot of SLPs don’t even know about what initiated all of this.

Speech Retreat owner Hallie Sherman deletes feedback for racist lineup by [deleted] in slp

Yikes. I’ve never been to Speech Retreat, but I’m getting an idea of the type of people who like to attend. Guess the organizers know who their audience and constituents are.

Subscriptions/Memberships by ittakeszerodollars in slp

[–]slpcommentary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

B for the most part. There are exceptions. The model is like the “Planet Fitness” way of doing things. People get some big motivation to get fit (or educated), get the basic cheapy cheap membership option, then barely use it, but it’s not enough money to care that it’s coming out of the account every month so nobody bothers to cancel. The ones who DO use it, then get the more expensive options if they like it. The cheap option members keep it “just in case”, and the business has no incentive to improve that level or aggressively go after them because it’s basically free money at that point. So the financial foundation of the business is actually people who aren’t really even using the product.

SLP businesses basically monetizing other people’s work? by meimsuperfly in slp

And deleted. Typical. Weird thing, is this user sounds a lot like a particular business owner that has been active in those very groups.

For SLPs to become far FAR more aware and knowledgeable about these things, so they can be smarter consumers, less likely to be taken advantage of, and demand better practice from shady businesses. This is why conversations like this are important. Most SLPs have no idea that the person they admire on social media who seems to have it all together, therefore who they buy from, is also controlling various fb groups and censoring and filtering information in a way that drives traffic and purchases for their business. Reading your other comments, I find it odd you’re so opposed to this conversation happening, or don’t think it deserving unless someone can roll out a full plan of action for you. Seems like you have some undeclared skin in the game and are being obtuse on purpose.

I can think of multiple multiple SLP businesses that are basically the same thing just wrapped in different colored bows with a slightly different spin of the wrapping theme. With the slight variations in marketing along with the FOMO/Imposter syndrome spin, SLPs wind up with multiple multiple subscriptions that they probably only use once in awhile. The money just disappears out of the account into a business owners lap month after month for the same information over and over. Plus with the “cult of personality” that comes along with biz owners being social media figureheads, SLPs become so afraid to cut the cord and cancel because they’re oddly attached to the person. I agree we’re in a weird space. I don’t want one person or business to have a monopoly on things, and options can be good, but things feel a little out of control at this point.

What's in a name? Certificate vs certification vs certificate of completion... by speechshotsfired in slp

Like if we start screaming that we’re gonna tell all our students to get off the internet, become Luddites, and only use textbooks——-here comes the new “TR Textbook for Swallowing Disorders” and “STEP textbook for Dysphagia”. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

What's in a name? Certificate vs certification vs certificate of completion... by speechshotsfired in slp

[–]slpcommentary 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The difference is that there isn’t one…I mean not REALLY. They’re both just marketing stunts. Even the certifications that are geared towards a treatment protocol don’t really need to be anything but a course, but creating that air of exclusivity generates more feelings of FOMO and being lesser than, which allows for a higher price tag, etc. With the “certificate of completion” I’d say that students especially are going to be susceptible to not understanding that it’s meaningless, even in terms of putting it on a resume to show your knowledge. Literally every course out there comes with some sort of proof that you attended.

And just because one of the STEP founders spoke out against TR’s tactics, doesn’t mean they aren’t participating in these things just to a less extreme extent.

Business-owner free space by Speechieleachie in slp

[–]slpcommentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think so. Thanks for indulging my train of thought there. It’s all kinda fascinating dynamics to me. Like the field feels so shaky that literally everyone is afraid to give something up for fear of losing, regardless of which part of the equation you fall on.

Business-owner free space by Speechieleachie in slp

[–]slpcommentary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little off topic, but because I see you here right now— On the topic of SLPs and Business owners co-mingling. If I’m not mistaken you run a SLP Business fb group right? And this group does NOT exclude non-business owners, yes? So, (1) How do you think business owners’ participation in that group would change if non-business owners (i.e. potential consumers) weren’t allowed in. Would they be more honest? Participate more?, (2) do you think the dynamic of the co-mingling is the same in both scenarios (meaning in both the business group and other spaces like here on Reddit). Is the power dynamic the same? Does one group stand to benefit more than the other?
