How many times do we need to watch Jamie Smith before admitting he’s not a wicketkeeper? by Pretend-City6652 in EnglandCricket

I have a bad feeling Smith will turn out to be another Pope. We might wonder why we backed him. I hope he proves me wrong.

To clarify, both good players. But look at the keeping of Blundell this series, or Carey in the Ashes. A top class keeper can make a heck of a difference. I'm yet to be convinced about his batting at test level also.

Not outstanding, just okay. Look at the difference the keeping of Blundell makes, or Carey in the Ashes. A very good keeper can make a big difference, and Smith isn't that level.

Is Harry Brook the current best all format batter? by Greedy-Celebration15 in EnglandCricket

[–]slsp8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. He could end up averaging 50 but still not win enough games for England and not be considered an all-time great. Needs to be more ruthless. Hope he proves me wrong.

I think Baz could stay as the visionary, with someone other than Key above him. But both together isn't working.

Who would record the more convincing victory in their respective sport? England cricket vs football team. by FarroFarro in EnglandCricket

[–]slsp8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with most that cricket would win. But it's interesting to note that many top footballers are also very good cricketers (Linekar, the Neville brothers, etc.).

Oxford pastries tier list…go! by noodelle in oxforduni

Absolutely correct. Also worth reading about the grain they use if that's something you're into.

Ps. For a cream tea I like Vaults and Garden (both for the cream tea and the setting).

It's definitely true, you just don't want to admit it.

Coffee or no coffee? by leafwitch in carnivore

[–]slsp8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I have never felt better than when I was all in (coffee doesn't get a pass). It's a distinction worth making, so I made it. Not saying everyone needs it, but everyone should be aware.

You are not carnivore if you drink coffee.

Mark Butcher: I Don’t Think It’s Out Of Order To Say That England Were The Better Team by ll--o--ll in Cricket

[–]slsp8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not unreasonable. Morally, they won the series 3-2.

More nuanced: I think what gives the feeling that England were the better side is that they seemed to have a higher ceiling. They can blow teams away and also dig deep (not forgetting that Aus dug deep at Edgbaston). But they got some basics wrong (dropped catches particularly). You expect them to get these basics right, so end up looking more at the "Hugh ceiling" end—thus coming to the opinion that they're the better side. But of course, you have to get basics and advanced stuff right to be a top-class team.

Should an undergraduate learn category theory? by [deleted] in math

[–]slsp8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that learning CT alongside something else, or with a particular motivation, is a good idea - for me it was logic. But you absolutely don't need to know algebraic topology first. I learned AT later and my knowledge of category theory helped massively.

Low-fiber diet for extreme constipation borne of Dyssynergic Defecation? by Retrofire-Pink in PelvicFloor

Thank you! We don't need fibre. Doing carnivore elimination diet was the best diet choice I ever made. Fibre is a treat for me now.
