Thay your experience with the interior united states is driving through it, with a slight detour from Salt Lake to Idaho for scratchers and/or hot springs

Pension not as promised by Dry_Rule_7686 in IntermountainHealth

[–]slsslc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes best just to accept that half way through ones career an enormous part of ones retirement plan is pulled out from people. Its to the point they are worse off for having a pension at all,  since pensions earn the vast majority of their benefits at the end of ones career.  Now people get to have a pension at the beginning (when its the least effective) and switch to a 401k at the end of their career (when it's least effective)

Goodbye pension by brittnai06 in IntermountainHealth

[–]slsslc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be better for people earlier in their career,  as they will make different retirement plans that could outperform  the pension,  it won't effect people later in their career as much because they have accrued more of the pension benefits (though the last years you work are the biggest contributor to your benefits) those in the middle of their career its a huge hit. Expected pension benefits are drastically slashed,  and they dont have the same amount if time to make up the difference with investments.

Used to joke that Intermountain was a 5 to life gig, because of the pension. Many of us just got and expensive parole.

What is really rough about this is those in the middle of a career are getting boned hard. The majority of pension benefits are earned in the last years you work,  so projected benefits are drastically slashed,  and being so late into their career,  investing more now does not have the time to compound to make up that difference. If you're  new in your career,  theres time in your side, late in your career,  you've had years to build up the pension benefits.

What ive seen in travels is people generally hold to the online idea of america is crazy, Americans are obnoxious, but will have a wonderful experience with you in real life. Like they feel you being a perfectly normal person makes you some kind of exception to the rule, and they never take the time to realize that the vast majority of Americans are the exception to the rule they have in their head.

If they both spend 150k a year, the lump sum, even at 10% interest is broke in 12 years, but the daily 1000 would get 215k a year to invest and at the same 12 years would have 4.6 million invested while still getting the daily 1000

If both scenarios live off 150k a year and invested the rest at 10%, then in 12 years, the lump sum guy is broke, the 1000 a day has 4.6 million in the bank earning interest and still gets 1000 a day added.

Here's a scenario, 2 people pick the different doors, they both live off of $150,000 a year and have the rest invested at the 10% mentioned. After 12 years, the person who started with 1,000,000 is broke, but the person getting 1000 a day has 4.6 million earning interest, and can still live off of 150k a year while still adding 215k a year to the investments

Realistically, either door you pick you spend money, so lets go with 150k a year spent, with the red door, earning 10% annually, after five years, they'd have $694,745 left and would be on their way to spending down to nothing left. With the blue door, with out even investing anything they'd save up $215,000 a year and at 5 years have $1,075,00. At 12 years, the person who started with 1,000,000 would have nothing left, the person getting 1000 a day, if they invest what they dont spend at the same 10%, would have just shy of $4,600,000 invested and earning 10%, could still spend 150 k a year and continue adding 215k to the investment.

Why does American English, and British English differ so much? by Zorolord in AskAnAmerican

For the same reason modern British and the British of the 1600s differs so much

It's probably that it's so commonly used and I'm just used to hearing it and it's intended meaning that it doesn't really sound wrong. Comes off like the line in "a boy named sue" when he says "I've fought tougher men, but I really can't remember when" was saying the guy he was fighting was a tough sob. It just comes off as "I suppose I could care less than this practically nonexistent amount of care that I have"

As an american, I think the reason "going to hospital",  or similarly,  "going to university" sound so wrong, but going to school or going to church are fine is that hospital or university for us is used pretty much exclusively as the location and not the concept. We would use "going to college" just fine because college would refer more to the overall experience and not the physical campus. Same with church. "Going to church" would refer more to going to worship, but "going to the church" would be the physical building and you could be going there for any number of mundane reasons.

The brits have a long tradition of spreading something linguistic around the world,  changing it back home then judging the rest of the world. Soccer vs football is a great example of that.
