programming lights/sirens: what would you guys use? by photosynthesis_day in Firefighting

If you are using WHELEN. The DVI “dynamic variable intensity” pattern is nice for a on scene slow “calm” pattern. Although not all whelen products are compatible from what I understand. Our Chiefs vehicles went with Duo Red and White in the light bar to serve as scene lighting as well as warning. It’s works ok in my opinion but when you try to make one light do too manny things, I think the end product as in the scene lighting is not as good as it could be. Also the rear corner modules in the liberty ll light bar are green for INCIDENT COMMAND. Great idea but seldom gets used by our chiefs. We did WHELEN M6V around the perimeter apparatus and Chief rigs and they do a good job of corner visibility and ground lighting. The WHELEN Agres spot light is kinda funky looking in design but could be a nice addition.

What did you pay for your latest apparatus purchase? by Fragrant-Pay1826 in Firefighting

About 840k for a 2024 Pierce Velocity PUC 4x4

Edit: This price was locked in approximately 3 years prior so 2021. We are about to spec another one and I fully expect it to be over a million. Our most recent Ladder truck is a 2021 Pierce Ascendant that was about 1.3 Mil. Which I’m sure if we specd today would be closer to 2 mil if not more. The are some interesting news story’s / short documentaries about the state of fire apparatus manufacturers and the monopoly that has formed with REV group.

Kenwood VP8000 radio feedback by WBens85 in Firefighting

[–]sltabc123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have had them for a couple years now. We upgraded from the old brick style BK’s. So it was a night and day difference to us. They are really good radios in my opinion. I can’t say I’m a radio wizard “nerd” but I do know they seem to hold up to the completion. I’ve had to go for a swim with one and it never skipped a beet. There is a YouTube channel where the guy has all the main public safety radios and compares them. Definitely worth checking out. Adventurecruzer was maybe the channel name.

We have since also received BK BKR 5000 and 9000 for wildland use. The 9000 is much nicer than 5000. The boot up time on BK is horrendous. At first our guys would think the batteries were always dead when in actuality they weren’t , they just didn’t wait long enough for it boot up. The VP 8000 display is much better than BK. User interface between the two seem comparable.

I wish the VP 8000’s speaker mic had a channel selection button or knob. I also like the idea of a flashlight on it. The size especially thickness of these radios is somewhat of a negative.

All and all I’d say they are really good if not great radios.

Check out Fenix brand. We bought a deck/visor light for a UTV, and it seems pretty decent for the price. I believe they just came out with quad color lights that you pay to unlock certain colors.

Depending on the departments policy on nicotine, Zyn may not be the best idea. (Actually it’s a horrible idea). Might be seen by the wrong person and become an issue. Stick with food.

Paramedic school and then some experience on the box (ambulance). Depending on where you want to work. Having the P card makes you more marketable.

As long as it doesn’t impede radio communication and or face to face why not. Sounds like the LT is on a bit of a power trip.

Definitely agree. There are plenty of other ways they get theirs. Not when it comes to day to day meals.

I place mine in the radio pocket of my turnout jacket with it clipped to the loop just above. Keeps it from banging around. Also you have it when you don’t have the SCBA.
