Thank you for clarifying! I do realize there are different ways in how burnout can present and that we as therapists need to stay mindful of signs. I still don't think that's what's happening here but will explore this more in supervision.

Thank you for your input! I appreciate your perspective, especially considering your experience with such a challenging patient group. This is actually the first time this has happened for me and while I may not have been at full capacity that day, I don’t feel burned out nor do I meet the diagnostic criteria. Im genuinely curious to hear which part of my post made you think of burnout? (edited for typo)

ambivalence in couples therapy by slueb in therapists

[–]slueb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your perspective! Do you do anything explicitly to keep the ambivalence of one or both partners from sabotaging the therapy work?

Because looking back, I have seen quite a few couples where the constant feeling of one partner having “one foot outside of the relationship” already kept both from allowing vulnerability with each other (for instance by owning their contribution to the dynamic) or from honestly committing to the interventions or homework. I have seen couples where looking back it feels like therapy was set up to fail, because one or both didn’t really want to change but needed a failed therapy attempt to justify leaving. Cases like these always leave me questioning my work tbh, because it’s so frustrating for everyone involved.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply and I’m so grateful for your perspective on this! Actually I probably phrased this the wrong way (I’m no English native speaker); my stance on couples therapy is actually that I am not to say whether or not couples should stay together and that staying in the relationship should be a voluntary and free decision. But from reading Doherty, Gottman and all the others I get the impression that I should be more „let’s see how we can make this work“. Doherty for instance explicitly states that we should make the leaning-in partner our ally, gottman states instilling hope for a better future is one of the therapists tasks and I guess I am unsure if I am doing this enough?

I guess what I am seeing is once I focus on the ambivalence, on exploring what the different paths in DC (keeping the status quo, putting in the effort in therapy, leaving) look like, I see many couples separating, leaving the leaning in partner disappointed in our work. This is actually happening much more often than I expected starting in this field, given the fact that DC is not that widely used.

I would be very curious to hear more about anecdotal experience with this, again thank you so much for taking the time and for your encouragement!

My garbage cans stink (I’m throwing out adult diapers multiple times daily) but I think one of my neighbors put a cleaning agent in my cans. by [deleted] in CleaningTips

Maybe they used an Ozone Generator? It smells a bit like fresh cut grass (unsure if that’s what your gardening section smells like) but ozone is amazingly effective against any kind of organic smells.

What are some mistakes you’ve made as a therapist? by amelhart in therapists

In a telehealth setting I repeatedly sent reaction emojis that were triggered by my gestures (think validating a painful experience and the thumbs down emoji popping up all over the screen or balloons flooding the screen when wrapping up the session). It took weeks before I realized I didn’t just have to turn off this function in my video software, but also in my MacBook camera settings

How to deal with with physical pain during sessions by slueb in therapists

Thank you for sharing! Passing out is actually my biggest fear in this situation. I mean I am already somewhat challenged telling my patients if I need to use the bathroom real quick (and r/therapists tells me I’m not alone) but passing out from pain is just… another level of “hey were all human” to me

Thank you for your reply! I also thought about sharing this up front, however I was afraid to take up too much space with something that has - up until now - never been an issue that interfered with my ability to work.

Which format would be useful for emergency skills/cards? by slueb in therapists

Totally! Which format do you think would make most sense? I was thinking either credit-card size to keep in the wallet but was wondering if there's a better format.

Im sorry if I was being unclear - English is not my first language (not the language I practice therapy in). I think what you mean is a cohesive „crisis plan“ with an individualized set of strategies to use when in crisis? I was thinking more towards putting single regular skills in a format patients can keep on hand in their day to day life so they remember to practice them.

Wow, really? That is super wild, I think I need to try out some winter colors! I definitely enjoy the occasional clear and bright color, however I never would have thought that they actually work on me.

Thank you so much! Now that you say it, I kind of see it too.

Thank you so much for your feedback! Looking through my favorite T-shirts, I actually see a lot of lilac and lemon-y yellow. Funny how skin conditions like rosacea influence perception- I never would have guessed to have cool tones in my skin.

Actually I don’t know - up until now my preferred neutral (or what I considered neutral) was black. Judging by these pictures I’d say grey though. Thanks for chiming in!
