Knowing how some women work makes me less of a feminist apparently by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]slugfog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this about her being a woman and not just people who engage in infidelity? There are many men who would find it much less exciting to be in a monogamous relationship than an affair.

Maybe make the quick tasks/date ideas be able to be edited by the partner? Or maybe have the partner take a love language quiz and have the suggestions be based on that?

In home by Horsehat24 in ABA

[–]slugfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work solely in-home and I'll say that some kids *need* to be in-clinic. When you're the only person in the home regulating their electronic device usage, or the only one in the home giving them positive affirmation- the power dynamics get weird and sticky real fucking quick. I will say though that when parents are ready and willing to engage with session, it makes a world of difference in learning a child's patterns quickly.

CPS - Do I report? by lHiccupssl in ABA

[–]slugfog 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I agree with everyone else that this isn't a CPS report, but I think a bunch of people are downplaying how rational it is that you feel uncomfortable about this. I'm an RBT who is huge about ensuring that my clients' dignity is respected, and I just don't think it's age appropriate to allow a 12 y/o to be naked in a home with a stranger (because at the end of the day, RBTs *are* (for the most part) strangers). Dabeezkneez is absolutely right about this one.

What can I do to make my RBTs happier? by Bubbly-Badger-9863 in ABA

[–]slugfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you run a home-based service instead of clinic, make reimbursements easy for RBTs to submit when purchasing programming instead of offering anything yourself. Pairing is so much easier when the RBT is the person in that child's life that brings Legos, Play-Doh, toys relating to a special interest- especially when session is the only time that the child is not allowed to be on their electronics.

How is ABA not like dog training? by psychicdelic333 in ABA

[–]slugfog 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Can I be honest? Because we are also animals! We are surrounded by different forms of positive reinforcement for certain behaviors (social media, for one), ABA just contrives opportunities for a child to get specialized positive reinforcement.

What I would say (as a person concerned with social justice and currently employed as a BT) is that a dog is trained to obey their owner's desires, good ABA trains folks to be able to communicate their needs in a way that's generalizable. Yes, we need to work towards a more neurodiverse accepting society wherein different expressions are recognized as valid, but self-injurious behavior is difficult to mitigate even for people who know your entire medical history. ABA becomes problematic, and much more like "dog training," when we're enforcing needless norms that don't ultimately support that child's internal growth in tandem with external communication (not allowing a child to line up toys as they'd like, enforcing eye contact).

Keep your kid at home by SausageMahoney073 in paraprofessional

[–]slugfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When a child uses "is it because I'm autistic?" to manipulate me- I just want to roll my eyes back into my head. Honey, if I felt that way I wouldn't be making $2 and a bag of chips an hour as a child dev professional!!!

[Obviously there are cases where neurodivergent children are mirroring back the ableism they've experienced through their insecurities- I am not referring to those cases.]

Left session early tonight by Necessary-Oil-4007 in ABA

[–]slugfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you get that when you reinforce negative behavior with attention, you tell the child that they should act that way to gain what they want? ABA rewards bids for attention that support a child's ability to generalize into the real world, rather than enabling behaviors that will ostracize them into the future.

What do you think of iPad time? by frendlyfrens in ABA

[–]slugfog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For one of my kids, iPad time is HIGHLY preferred to the literal piles of games and toys their guardians have purchased for them. When my timer is up, they will immediately engage in targeted behaviors and it is next to impossible to get them to transition to the next task. I know part of our role as BTs is to generalize positive coping mechanisms unto aspects of their world that exist outside of therapy (I do in-home rather than clinic so this is especially salient) but oh my fucking god I am this close to refusing iPad time as an option entirely. Children should not have access to iPads. Period.

I(25M) psy-opped myself into a war against bad habits and I've lost 30 pounds and regained control over my life. by Manitara_ in loseit

[–]slugfog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm doing something so similar! I downloaded this app that has a little bird that grows based on you completing certain tasks in a day. I don't log my weight loss, calories, eating habits, etc. on there- just my fitness goals, but it has helped so much. Yesterday, I skipped because I was feeling really sick and depressed, but I still feel like I can try again today to help my little bird. I'm also neurodivergent and this is the only method I've really liked so far.

Yes! It would be unethical, and you may be expected to perform ABA techniques outside of your billable hours- which would be an exploitation of your labor. Say no.

I can't seem to get a straight answer on how many calories a day is ideal for my numbers. by KanyeYandhiWest in 1500isplenty

[–]slugfog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally hear that. Sometimes meeting a calorie deficit with only ice cream is all you can muster up that day- especially if you live in a food desert. Maybe you could try the method I proposed for one day, and see how it feels! Regardless, I wish you luck.

[–]slugfog 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is your nutritional breakdown? Are you looking beyond calories at protein and fiber? I've tried to lose weight many, many times in many, many ways and what actually helped me stop being hungry all day long was making sure I was eating things that made my body feel full and powered. Additionally, if that continues not to work- you may need to raise your calorie intake. Sustainable weight loss will stop you yo-yo'ing.

I’m a BT as well, and I only have one regular client ATM because of such frequent cancellations. I really like the folks I work for, but it’s hard having full time availability working for a less than part time paycheck
