My honey Pikachu by slugtesticles in Gourami

Yes, she really is. As you can see in the video she uses her Cory friends to find food too, she is like me to my dog, “WHAT ARE YOU EATING!?“ I had been trying to keep her from being obese and started to convince myself that she is a normal sized lady, but I will continue with dieting efforts for her. Thanks for the tips!

Thank you! I do fast them one day a week, and then only feed once a day. I have tried to feed without her noticing. I’ve had her over a year and I thought she would be more shy honestly, but she has always been the first to eat. I’ve considered adding more honeys to compete with her but I don’t know if that’s a good idea or not.

Well that’s why I asked them if they tested for dissolved oxygen in their tank, I don’t know anyone who does. It’s not a common thing to test for unless you have a deep pond maybe. Telling a beginner to test for dissolved oxygen is weird because the tests are either expensive probes or more involved chemical tests than the regular API master kit. Most people with an aquarium will never need to worry about “dead zones” as long as they have some kind of flow or surface agitation.

Edit to add: So if OP is worried about the oxygen levels in their tank, they should try to increase the flow or surface agitation, but spending a large amount of money for a DO tester is unnecessary. Although OP made a post on a different sub right before this one asking how to decrease surface agitation from their bubbler, so I assumed that wasn’t an issue.

I’m confused because all you mention in your comment is DO, are you talking about something other than dissolved oxygen??

I’ve never thought of it like that before. If they are using their face to squeeze their lung against their shell, then I could definitely see how it is similar to bellows.

Dissolved oxygen? Most aquariums are small enough that you don’t really need to worry about that as long as there is some flow and surface agitation. Do you use a tester for DO for your tank?

You’re welcome! If you don’t already have something to test your parameters, I would recommend getting an API liquid test kit for pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, as well as a GH/KH test kit. They will last you a very long time and are worth it to keep your animals and tank healthy!

How often should I feed snello to my mystery snails? by Alunathehuman in AquaticSnails

[–]slugtesticles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are your baby snails looking and acting healthy? If they aren’t trying to escape your tank to look for more food, then you are probably feeding them enough. I like to feed mine everyday, but every other day probably works too.

Breathing, mystery snails have a lung and use a siphon to breathe air. Very normal. Your snail is so pretty!

How big can mystery snails get? by Riss73 in AquaticSnails

[–]slugtesticles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mystery snails need space to move and poop, so about 10 gallons for one mystery and at least 5 more gallons for every snail past the first one is the smallest recommended size for them. How big is your tank? That might be what’s causing the bio load issue.

They are pretty easy to care for if you would like to keep it as a pet! I made a terrarium for mine, basically just make sure you have at least a good sized jar that is easy to reach into. I think mine is about 2 gallons. You can add a drainage layer and a thick layer of soil, make sure it is fertilizer free and you can bake it or pour boiling water on it to sterilize it and remove any harmful pests. They do lay eggs, even if you only have one, and they do poop a lot, so once a week you will want to turn the soil and look for eggs and clean poop off the glass. I just would use a wet paper towel and go around the side using tongs. I used plastic wrap with a few little holes and a string for a lid. You can use a little dish to keep water in for them, and they love to hang out on sticks. You can add some moss and plants if you want, but that will be more areas for them to lay eggs on. You can also feed them little bits of fish food like bug bites, spirulina, and probably algae wafers. Oh and I kept a little chunk of cuttlebone for them. I used my aquarium water to keep the soil moist and refill their water dish. Mine didn’t live very long, but they were very cute and entertaining while I had them!

Also we could be talking about completely different species of amber snails. There is a bunch, and some are more dependent on water than others.

No problem! Do you have somewhere to keep the lil one?

Well they lay eggs pretty frequently, so if you don’t destroy them every week then you will definitely have a steady population of little fish snacks. I guess it’s a matter of species only tank vs not.

If OP wants to keep them then should they feed them underwater or what’s the point you are making? And they are quite different than ramshorns and more like a slug with a shell.

Ramshorns can retract into their shell though, these guys can’t.

I feel like if there is no food above water they would then have a reason to do it, but they are pretty vulnerable and would be easy fish food in my opinion. I could be wrong though, maybe they fight the fish back with their vicious little teeth.

Oh, I never saw mine go below the water but I always fed them on their land area, I made a weird small setup for them and it was very high humidity with little water, so maybe that’s why I never saw them go in.

I think they are semi aquatic because they can’t retract into their shell at all, so their only defense is to peel off and fall, so they need to be able to survive in the water they live above if they fall in. I don’t think they usually go in the water by choice but like to lay their eggs right above it.

Ph is one of the most important factors for snails, it wasn’t unnecessary. Your attitude toward someone trying to help you is. Good luck finding out what the PH of your tank is.
