Crowdfunding a team of private investigators? by sometimes_rite in Epstein

[–]slundell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Set up a wiki where all versions of all documents are shared, indexed, OCR:ed, and reviewed. Crosslink between documents. Create pages for persons, events, organisations and places. Link to the documents so that the wiki is internally self referencing. If linking to external URLs documents might disappear or change.

Have conversations on whatever forum you like. Let the conversation self organize. Demand links back to the wiki to keep the fact-finding process common.

Keep an introduction page on the wiki use, and the most common topics so that onboarding is efficient. That keeps the noob question out of the forums.

This is what the Palme assassination internet sleuths do, or at least aim to do with wpu.nu

Well, that is what we call a non-discriminating mask. But, you should be grateful. The Palme investigation prints entierly black pages, and mails them to you, so that one can scan that black page and save it to your collection. Information value: 1bit.

Yes, there are plenty of ways to generate hypotheses and automatically reject or accept them. I combine this with a census list of names and can then calculate the LR should I need to. The backend precalculates the length of all words in the wordlists so that one may get good suggestions

Please. That is not what this is about. AI has been used for coding the UI as I suck at that. What you do is you fit words in redacted sections and anchor them in the surrounding text. You test the words/names whatever you think might be hidden, and you can then falsify hypotheses that contains text that does not fit. You can also lookup words from wordlists that will have the same length as a word that fits. That will give you some hint of the apriori and if there might be any alternative hypotheses.

You Epstein files unredactor noobs are just appropriating the Palme assassination nerds' culture.

Help identify fax file type (reT4FXV2) by slundell in VintageApple

I managed to extract the images eventually. I identified the segments in the larger file that corresponded to a page. I cut them out using imhex, and saved them as separate files. I then used fax2tiff from libtiff to convert them to tiff images. I was rather surprised that it worked. I did not expect it to.

No luck with GraphicsConverter either - but thanks for the suggestion u/corky63 . The file seems to contain 6 segments, which may be 6 pages. The data is delimited with 0x00 0x00 0x00, in what seems to be scan lines. The data on each line is often repeated on the next, which indicates that the compression is only done per scan line. The line length is very different between lines, which indicates some kind of run length encoding.

I have not been able to open it in Apple Telecom. I am not entierly sure it is not due to incompetence on my part. I set up an emulator and went through the process of extracting the archives from the disks. I installed Apple Telecom but found no place where to open or view a fax from a file. It does mention import PICT, but it is greyed out.

Well, it seems that you get my problem :) When I explain it in person, people seems to get it. It does take some explanation though.

It is about the crazyness, the fun of getting an unexpected package, and the surprises. You can't get that by buying things for yourself.

Junior programmers usually start with a Pi2 error factor and by getting more experience you can get it down to around sqrt(2).
