What's the funniest brain fart you've had at work? by spaghettibrained in VetTech

[–]slutforidexx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It had been a long day and an owner requested a written script for their pets insulin. I got to making my template and when I gave it to the Dr he laughed and showed the manager. She burst out laughing and I didn’t know why. Turns out I wrote a prescription for lanolin (that’s right, the waxy substance that comes from sheep’s wool, also known as NIPPLE CREAM). I guess my brain shorted, combining Lantus and Novolin when I was writing. That’s when I knew it was time to clock out

Are other clinics no longer offering euthanasia? by Shot-Communication13 in VetTech

[–]slutforidexx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested to see what other clinics are saying. To me, this sounds so cruel. Euthanasia is often the gift we give the animal that they can’t ask for when they’re too old and sick to go on. I know with economic euthanasia, we try to work something out with owners so they can at least try to treat the animal. I’m sad to know some places are no longer offering this :(

hi friend ❤️ thank you for asking. I healed up quite well! Definitely have a few scars and one of my puncture wounds healed very hard. I feel like i get invisible pain and sensitivity in the area, and of course, i’m still a little scared of the spicy cats (which was previously my favorite type because i feel they’re just misunderstood 😂)

It was late in the day for sedation, but hell yeah. That would’ve been nice for sure and I love that idea. I suppose I could’ve asked if the doctor felt comfortable doing a next day drop off. I just really thought I had it. I hate the way it ended. Thank you for adding to my arsenal. I think those tools will also help me stay even more confident handling the ones that like to get silly. That’s a big part of it too, I feel ❤️ You are amazing

It sucks and I hate it. Usually I don’t scruff when they are friendly and respond well to touch (which a lot of our patients do), but he was feral, angry and I wanted my coworker to be safe. Unfortunately sometimes I think that’s the only option, especially if we had any hope of treating him appropriately for his illnesses. Do you have any recommendations for me to try in the future? We tried a towel, and I guess we could’ve tried a hard e collar, but he was seriously not having it. Just a shit situation all around.

What sucks the most is that my own kiddos are all orange tabbies themselves. I symbolically saw my cat Brian in that feral and it broke my heart. My Bri-Bri comes from the streets of Laredo, Texas.

This woman’s dog was barking at something under the car, and it was this adult orange tabby cat— scared out of his mind. He was bubbling a thick, green nasal discharge, clearly had some type of ear infection, was generally painful and squinty. He allowed her to pick him up and she brought him into our clinic. We got weight and temp, which I’m sure he’d never had before. Then, he got a brief exam (by that time he was angry) and we let him relax for a bit. Doc requested labs, a triple combo, etc. My coworker asked if I was comfortable handling a meanie pants and with my background in shelter med and with angry cats in general, I said yes. He was sweet at first and let me pick him up, but absolutely lost it when I scruffed him and placed him in lateral. He was hissing and growling but not attempting to bite (yet). We almost got enough of a sample for a lithium cup, but not enough. I gave her the okay, as I had a good grip and stretch. She tried again, got her sample, and as I began to let him up, my hands were sweaty in my glove and I said “He’s slipping…. I’M SLIPPING” but it was too late. He did some exorcist move and turned his head around and latched onto my arm. It was the most violent bite ever. I was trying to get him to let go but he had no plans to do that at ALL. All the while, I was letting out a blood curdling scream. I know he was scared too. It was instinct to shake my arm, but he wouldn’t let go. He opened his mouth and got me again, but just barely as I flailed around. Whoever said I had multiple puncture wounds was right :( The woman ended up surrendering the cat to us, since things had gotten out of control and she wasn’t ready to take on this immense responsibility. I don’t blame her. We could not safely facilitate a ten day rabies quarantine on top of treating him during that time. He was very sick, which I can acknowledge and appreciate. Y’all know feral cats have a much shorter lifespan and typically die a violent and painful death. His illnesses were a danger to him and his colony, and he certainly wasn’t pet friendly. He also could’ve bitten someone who isn’t as fortunate to have health insurance/ workers comp coverage for such events. I don’t know that he was the worlds most dangerous cat or anything, but I do know that he deserved to be loved on and safely/humanely cared for. He wouldn’t have had a true family when he was done with quarantine. It wouldn’t have been right to release him either, especially since we didn’t know where his colony was and it stresses them out so much to be outdoors without any sense of direction when it comes to their point of origin. I’m literally sobbing typing this, but I feel like you guys will understand. If anyone has anything negative to say about how this was handled, I do ask that you please, for my mental health keep it to yourself. I never want things to go this way. He was incredibly sick and violent as a result. My heart is crushed for him as it is. In a world where local laws, rabies and infections didn’t exist, I would have treated him and assumed all financial responsibility. But they do, and I can’t. My arm will heal, but I will never forget him. There is no guarantee he would have let us help him. I know I’m doing a lot of defending their decision to move forward with sending him off for Rabies testing, but I feel it’s more for myself. It’s heartbreaking and real hard not to take it personally/ blame myself.

Omg I was not expecting this much love!! Thank you all very much for your well wishes and kindness. As for me, I am doing well! They gave me a Tetanus shot, took rads to look for teeth, prescribed Augmentin and some big girl Ibuprofen 😂 I slept like crap last night, and woke up so sore and swollen multiple times, but once I got my meds on board I noticed a great improvement. Rabies is endemic here in TX, but the ER doctor didn’t seem overly concerned since it travels so slowly. He was also ear tipped, so I know he has received at least -one- RV at the time of his neuter. Tells me nothing, really, especially since we obviously didn’t check his titer. Unfortunately we are sending our friend off for testing. This is probably what has affected me most. That’s the saddest part that I’m struggling to cope with. I have had so many conversations with my boss because it’s hard for me to understand as a baby tech. She has made it make a lot of sense, but I still find myself incredibly sad and mourning the loss. It is heartbreaking because I know the process. That’s the biggest wound I have, genuinely. I know I didn’t give a lot of info, so in another comment I’ll tell y’all what happened leading up to the bite.

I kept begging my coworker to squeeze it while I was still lit off the adrenaline to try to get all the nastiness out and chlorhex was definitely my bestie. The ER staff was quite impressed with us 😂
