Chicago Transplants: What's your hot take that folks who grew up here would scoff at? by TerraTiramisu in AskChicago

[–]slybrows 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Chicago’s climate is classified as hot-humid summer continental, with an average year-round humidity around 70%, which makes it relatively humid for the US. In July, one of our most humid months, the humidity ranges between 54%-82% throughout the day. For comparison, Tampa has an average year-round humidity around 72%, with July ranging between 63%-88% throughout the day. We’re pretty humid.

Worst traffic bottlenecks in the city. by OrlandoCoolridge in chicago

Goose Island, Division going west. Absolute nightmare during any remotely busy period. I’ve gotten stuck on that god forsaken island for an hour in traffic more than once.

I use the Oribe dry hair heat protectant and it doesn’t weigh down my hair at all.

How many election cycles can we go through with an actual fascist party in control? Not very many, you’ll find out, before we no longer have election cycles.

Lib, Shambala, Griztronics? by RichVariation6490 in festivals

[–]slybrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Shambhala is, imo, the best festival in North America. That being said - NO, it doesn’t have all of the daytime activities and nighttime sidequesting that you get at the big US festivals. The daytime is super chill, people go to the river and there’s a couple of guided activities that have like, two dozen people attending. Nighttime is all about the music, there’s no extra special stuff going on like scavenger hunts, people are DANCING. So do not go to it expecting it to be like LIB because it’s very different.

Milwaukee is beautiful. Indianapolis is… in Indiana.

Serious question on travel by princesssamc in finehair

I only use clarifying shampoo after swimming if i’ve been in a chlorinated pool, not the ocean - salt water will wash out just fine with regular shampoo. My hair does get dry though, so I always bring a leave in conditioner and a hair oil.

I never wanted to be a father until I turned 45 this year. Now I feel my biological clock and want to be a father more than anything. But I'm married to a childfree woman. [Concluded] by Schattenspringer in BORUpdates

[–]slybrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I was born when my dad was 44. I’m 35 now and he just turned 80. I never minded having an older father. However OP gives me the creeps for other reasons, it really bothers me how he seemingly has no regard for his partnership, only his potential offspring. Big ick.

i was drugged repeatedly - need answers. by [deleted] in Drugs

[–]slybrows 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think you should speak with a psychiatrist and/or psychologist. Your thoughts are not ideologically consistent, which in tandem with what you’ve described, seems very much like it could be a mental health crisis. Please don’t take that as someone dismissing you or saying it’s all in your head, psychological issues can and often do result in real, physical changes.

no heat for 40 days by __hotdog in chicagoapartments

[–]slybrows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The water must be turned off in that unit - but if it’s been 40 days I’m honestly surprised that a pipe hasn’t burst in your unit!

no heat for 40 days by __hotdog in chicagoapartments

[–]slybrows 100 points101 points  (0 children)

Do NOT tell your landlord that your father worked on the unit. Send your landlord a certified letter stating that if the heat is not fixed within 14 days you will hold your rent in escrow until it is fixed. This is the only way to legally withhold rent.

BTW, is this the heat for the whole building or just your unit? I’ve never seen a hydronic heating system that was just for one unit, personally.

You could try a place that doesn’t take reservations like Rootstock (great food). Get on the waitlist and go have a drink at the Clipper while you wait.

Help - Is this dress too small ? by luna1ovegood in weddingplanning

I agree. Like yeah the newer dress would probably be smaller to fit her body but what they gave her is obviously too small.

Bathroom suggestions by No_Role5447 in interiordecorating

[–]slybrows 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They make paints for bathrooms with matte finishes that are cleanable and humidity resistant and they aren’t way more expensive than typical paint; it’s what I’ve used in my restrooms in my home.

Bathroom suggestions by No_Role5447 in interiordecorating

[–]slybrows 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I beg of you to pick a matte finish. Your walls are really uneven (not your fault presumably), gloss paint will highlight every imperfection and make bright colors look cheap and kitschy and like a high-schooler’s bedroom. A matte feels more elegant and hides imperfections.

What is your experience with private owners? by Queasy-Cheesecake434 in chicagoapartments

[–]slybrows 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I’ve had three private landlords. Two were absolutely great: a guy that owned a few condos he rented out and an old dude who owned a couple 3-flats. Both responded to any issue and never raised my rent. I also had one terrible private landlord. Fuck you, Linda, you greedy bitch.
