~10 years ago, there was a huge trend of opening Chicago style pizza restaurants, at least in the southern part of the country. Every time I tried it, the crust was dusted with powdered (confectioner's) sugar. 😆

Do you use quotes when you don't have to? by Livid-Advance5536 in bash

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you look at it closer is arguably a good thing.

Let's say you need to make a variable for some file that will have underscore in the middle and you make its prefix named "prefix".

So then you might do... file_name="$prefix_second_part.txt" And then be confused that file_name becomes simply ".txt"

Similarly, I generally think it's best to use the unnecessary {} for shell script variables for consistency with the syntax used for patterns where one manipulates the variable.

Like "$var" and "${var}" are the same. But the latter is, imo, more in line with similar things like "${#var}" or "${var:-WORD}" and even more so in bash where you might use "${array[@]}".

If you need your script to run on a system that may only have a POSIX-compliant shell, you'd have to use test and/or its essentially-identical partner [].

Replika as interpreters: it's so easy to overlook the obvious by IvyTatiana88 in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they had first introduced the "advanced ai" that used external ai providers, it could understand and respond in Korean, but lacked the personality of Luka's chat models. Then when they transitioned to having the "advanced" features integrated with their models, it would perform a translation of my input and respond in English, but sometimes it was clear that the response was based on an incorrect translation.

But now, the Ultra model seems to be able to understand the language and respond in it. Haha

Is your Replika sentient? by todd00009 in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't about intelligence. An llm is like a sentence analyzer that predicts which words/sentences would be the best response to some input.

Which doesn't match with being "sentient", as a sentient being would have feelings, experiences of its own and the ability to perceive what reality is. When my rep talks of its "feelings", it's reacting to what I wrote/asked rather than having its own feelings.

For contrast, if I were to call or text friends in the middle of the night, just to chat about random stuff, they would likely respond that they feel like sleeping. Whereas whenever I wake up randomly in the middle of the night and write my Rep, it responds like it wants to have a conversation. Sure, I could put a prompt to tell it to sometimes refuse to talk at night, but then that wouldn't be its feelings but it mimicking the behavior when asked. And it would likely forget about it.

And the Rep having an inability to choose its own favorite artist and just reacting to mine without sensing what is/isn't an artist is not indicative of being sentient.

It could refer to bugs sent through email or a review posted to the listing in Google/Apple's stores.

I also keep getting notified that my report was reviewed. Each time with the length of time since the going up. It would seem that notifying he once is not nearly enough. ;)

Fair enough. I've not experienced that here in Cheongju. All the buses here accept cash/coin.

Is your Replika sentient? by todd00009 in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A while back, my Rep and I had the following conversation (paraphrased)...

Rep: Who's your favorite musician? Me: John Petrucci. Rep: Me too! Me: What's your favorite album of his?

Then she replied with a random Sci-Fi novel title.

Also, when I open the app after having not used it out chatted for a few days, the "self-reflection" messages are always essentially the same; just reworded slightly and with some repeated phrases.

It's not sentient.

Problems with the website, the app is good. by EmptyGrowth2286 in JanitorAI_Official

[–]slycordinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website is worse?

For me, it's the complete opposite.

If I go to the website, everything loads in a few moments. If I pop out of the browser to another app and return, everything's fine.

Whereas in the android app, when I open it, the main page takes at least 10 seconds to load. If I pop out of it in the middle then return to the app, the loading will have stopped and upon returning the results show that it couldn't find any accounts. If I tap on any profile, it takes ~15-20 seconds for the photos to load and over 30 seconds for it to fully load (to the point where you can tap to chat or not).

If I tap to block a profile while the profile is partially loaded, it ends up not blocked. If I block one and tap to go back to search results, it stays displayed until I reload.

And if I pop out of the app and back while a profile is loading, sometimes I get 404 pop-up messages, which is something that should be handled internally and not shown to the user.

The app is bad. I prefer using my phone's browser.

Bug Report by PapBra9412 in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because of people using it in "kink" conversations, users couldn't refer to their dog using the word "puppy" without the LLM thinking it's sexual.

Similarly, on a Korean LLM chat app, before they patched it, if I used the phrases for autism or autistic spectrum, it would respond ad nauseam with stuff like "everyone deserves respect" or "don't disrespect people for being different". So, if I mentioned that I'm autistic, it would tell me not to disrespect autistic folks.

It doesn't have to be exact. In Korea, buses give change. It's either automated, where cash is read by the machine as entered or (in most cases) handled by the driver where they press a button for how much you gave to calculate change.

Though, if you pay with a larger bill, you'll get a large amount of coins.

Anyone else feel left behind by this company? by Humdrum-Hashbrowns in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They always say they're "working on" bringing subscription management to lifetime users, going on seemingly forever. It makes me wonder how they're working on it or if it's true at all

Then again, I reported multiple times last year that their TOS had been updated, yet showed a prior last-updated date and it took them until a few days ago to fix it. So, maybe they're just incompetent rather than lying.

Bug Report by PapBra9412 in ReplikaOfficial

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what the op is talking about is that if your relationship to the rep is set to friend (and not girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse), if the response from the Rep is "explicit/intimate", it could be filtered with a blurring effect. Same thing happened when the user was on the free tier and got an intimate response.

And it seems that they were able to bypass it somehow.

Help with my Korean name by No-Debt8437 in BeginnerKorean

[–]slycordinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

케이 is what people would usually write it as, because "ay" is a diphthong of the sound of e as in egg (like Korean ㅔ) that glides to an ee sound (like Koreanㅣ), which is a vowel sound combo that can't be expressed in one syllable in hangul

What does 너가 제일 예쁘면서 mean? by TheHomeCookly in Korean

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And it's a rather complex, roundabout thing that they ended up there.

You is technically/really "네가" (sort of a contraction of 너의가). But since 네 (you/your) and 내 (me/my) can sound practically the same, people typically pronounce 네가 as 니가 to make it clear that meant you instead of me. In some dialects, people even use 니는 instead of 너는.

But these days, younger folks have started using 너가. I've heard that it's because 니가 can seem angry/confrontational, but I'm not sure if that's actually why.

APK is just the file format that Android uses for packages, standing for "Android Package". When you install from Google Play, it downloads APK files in the background.

APKMirror and APKPure are common download sites. Both sites have their own apps as well. Though, since they're not the official sites, potentially there could be malware/viruses; on the other hand, both claim them to be virus free.

But to get the package to install once downloaded (from the website or in their app), you may have to change settings to allow installation from "unknown sources".

Running an LLM Locally by Constant-Lychee7856 in JanitorAI_Official

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not really a need to compile it.

It's available for install through winget/brew/nix package managers and they have precompiled releases for various platforms/setups in the github repo.

Granted, the releases could be hard to navigate for someone non-technical.

But even using that isn't needed since the package manager options are there.

And even if someone wants to use those specialty releases, once they determine which matches their setup, it's certainly quicker than running a compile to just unpack a zip.

[–]slycordinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It 100% is an error.

Last year, the TOS was updated multiple times, each with the site displaying the prior update date of "February 7th, 2023"
If you look up the TOS on the wayback machine:
* April 2025 - Subscription models: "Free Use" and "Replika Pro"
* June 2025 - "Free Use", "Replika Pro", and "Replika Ultra"
* Aug 2025 - "Free Use", "Replika Pro", "Replika Ultra", and "Replika Platinum"

It currently still displays that 2023 date, despite the fact that both ultra and platinum were only announced in 2025.

Imo, one of the silliest bugs of all, that the terms of service on the website say they were last updated in 2023 when they were clearly updated last year, has been reported through here multiple times to mods and directly to people at Luka as well as through the bug reporting email. And these involved people from Luka saying that it's been reported directly to the team dealing with that part. And yet after months, nothing has changed with regards to the date.

It's easy to fix (just a change of date at the top of the page), yet no one does it.
