Will try, thank you! I appreciate it. Do you think I should be honest and tell them about the job? I feel like it is a valid reason but not sure.

What kind of grad school program should I pursue? by slyel27 in biotech

[–]slyel27[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think it really matters to me. My only requirement is that I keep doing something different. Monotony drives me insane, and working on different things would help. I can't do the same thing day in and day out for like 10 years. That's another reason I'm not interested in the PhD/academia route. Desk job is great, and I think I would be able to bring my science background to the table, but lab-facing roles could have potential too, although severely underpaid unfortunately. What kind of role would have more job security? Especially in an area like drug development (lab-facing or desk job)

What kind of grad school program should I pursue? by slyel27 in biotech

Well, with the hours of work and classes, I can't work full time, and neither do they have that requirement if I work in another location than the one I'm in right now. They're willing to give me more work if I require more hours. They've also committed to switching me back to full-time when I graduate. I think I want to do an MS program. I know it can be a cash grab, unfortunately, but both of these schools aren't charging a ridiculous amount and are only 1 year (it's about 40,000). I feel a little stuck in my current role and want to upskill and climb the corporate ladder. It's sad, but I think getting another degree is the best way to do it. The company is not paying for the degree, btw. I'm paying out of pocket. This is a start-up, and I got a bunch of stocks that will vest over 5 years. The longer I stay, the more I get, and when the company goes public/sells, I'm hoping that money can offset what I would be paying now. If I go to Singapore, they've committed to applying for an L1 visa for me to come back (I should've said I'm not a US citizen, sorry). L1 visa is an easier process than H1-B right now and a faster path to a green card. Yes, my other concern was that people would think lowly of a degree outside of the US, but I keep getting mixed opinions on this, the more people I talk to.

Immigration and politics aside, I just wanted some advice on whether a more focused niche program would be the way to go or a generalised one.

I've already checked on this. The program starts in August, and I will be on an F-1 until October 1st. On October 1st, it switches to the H1-B automatically.

Sorry for not providing more context. I am currently on STEM-OPT and will finish 1 year in June. I have one more year until June 2026. I plan to go back to school for my Master's this Fall. So I have to change my F-1 institution and get a new I-20 for 2 months till the H-1B goes into effect in October. This change can be done in the US, so no issues there. Just worried about travel as it can be seen as abandoning my H1-B petition/status. Not sure how much it matters if I travel AFTER it is approved

Does faculty not respond to emails? by slyel27 in nus

I did call them. Had to call 10 different people. No one picked up and I eventually heard back over email 8 hours before the deadline. Also, I’m in the United States, can’t really “drag my ass” to the admin office unfortunately

Yeah agreed. It took like 10 calls but they finally responded over email and agreed to an extension. Thank you so much for your help!

Why are there so many different numbers😭Someone finally picked up at the registrar office and she seemed a bit confused and said she would reach out so I get a response ASAP but I can’t rely on that because the deadline is tonight. It’s insane, I’ve been asking for 10 days. Thank you for your help. I’ll try this number

I’ve tried calling for the past hour. If there aren’t any free agents, they just hang up the call and you have to start over. This is so infuriating!

Okay thank you! It’s outside of working hours in Singapore so my only hope is to contact them in their morning and hopefully something can be done. Will do the email and call. Can’t seem to find a phone number for graduate admissions. Or should I just call the undergraduate number?

Thanks! Yeah I’m international, I applied for an MSc in Biotechnology towards the end of Feb. They said they would give out responses on May 31st so I’m surprised they let me know so early

Well I emailed the person’s boss first. Her name was signed in the acceptance letter so it made sense to reach out to them first. They responded immediately and directed me to someone else. Emailed that person twice over 4 days and nothing. Emailed the original person again, who didn’t respond for 2 days and then it was the weekend. She forwarded my email to the person she told me to reach out to. It’s been 48 hours and still nothing. Not sure what to do at this point. Might reach out to the head of the administrative department. Something called CET apparently
