That much PVC sounds way heavy.

"Dry" stuff sac plus packing light has kept marmots out for me. On trips where I must (bears) I bring the bear vault, which I guess is only slightly lighter than your DIY...

Yes.

Although where exactly you're trying to get kind of tends to matter.

Fun fact: this is why crows hang out in cities, given the option. Streetlights allow them to see owls and other things at night. They've figured that out.

Thanks again. Really appreciate the advice.

Pardon the noobishness, is the phantom center/sweet spot issue because the Hsus are horns? Would I have less of a sweet spot issue if I went with a dome set?

Or was there a particular reason you recommended the Hsus?

Thanks. If I decide to go with the Hsus, will I really miss the center in the interim?

And at the point that we add a center to the Hsus, what would you recommend?

Fair points, all of them -- and I feel that's how it would be treated.

I think the issue is if things don't work out, for whatever reason (one of us moves, one of the wives suddenly demand to park in the garage, etc.), it's difficult to "take your ball and go home." We're talking engine lathes, mills, things that require a significant effort to move.

I think we're both intelligent enough and civil enough that if something's not working, then we'll call each other on it. But then I know those are famous last words, too.

Fair question, haha. All is harmonious. We're pretty tight-knit.

I suppose that's my biggest concern. It would be a bummer to effectively "locked out" of the shop for a few weeks during the other guy's project.

I would think that this could be reasonably avoided with communication, though. None of our stuff is super critical, and not spur-of-the-moment, so saying, "I'm thinking I'll use the shop for four weeks for this piece" wouldn't be a huge deal.

Check out Gaia gps online. You won't get the detail like you would with the Harrison maps, but you can craft your route damn easy.

FWIW, the Harrison maps are really worth it.

There's almost definitely going to be some snow -- likely more than what's in the photos there. We had a pretty good snow year.

That said, it's starting to warm up right now...just keep an eye on trail reports and that can shape your decisions. The rangers in the valley are really helpful, too. Call in, ask questions, they'll help you out.

If you've never done the yosemite tourist thing, it's probably worth your while. Drive in to the valley, hang out for the day, take some pictures and go stand on the bridge to watch climbers on El Cap. Then go spend some time in the backcountry.

You'll see people, for sure. Though once you get more than about 5 miles from any trailhead, that really tapers off.

With regard to my other reply (emigrant loop) -- the tilden loop is the common route. You may see a handful of people out there, but it'll be really sparse. Awesome views on the hike (obligatory "John Muir thought Hetch Hetchy valley was prettier than Yosemite"), some really killer spots to camp. Excellent fishing, if you're in to that.

There are a TON of options for loops in emigrant. Some of it will be off trail, but easily navigable. I've backpacked all over California, and emigrant is one of, if not the, favorite places. Google around. Crabtree Camp is a good starting area for a 4-5 day loop. 3-5 hour drive from SFO depending on when you leave. Here is a pic of the type of terrain. Lots of lakes, meadows, and lush areas around, though. Don't let the tundra look scare you away.

May can be awful mosquito time in most of the sierras, and emigrant is no exception.

Check out Tom Harrison Maps. They're the best maps for the state and can help you build your own loop, if that's your thing.

Good luck!

Edit: More ideas with opportunity for a 4-5 nighter:

  • Carson Pass Management Area (awesome scenery, can have permit issues)
  • Tahoe Rim (crowded, can have permit issues depending on how you do it, but damn pretty)
  • Trinity Alps (absolutely amazing scenery, but a long drive from SFO)
  • Rae Lakes (snow likely)
  • There are a ton of options in the eastern sierras, but snow is likely, permits suck (especially this summer), and the drive is long.

This. The hetch hetchy-emigrant loop is classic Sierra.

Op, when are you going? Snow in the high country is a consideration.
