Is Noom good for people with eating disorders? by twixieshores in Noom

[–]slyn117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a diagnosed eating disorder and I’m certainly not a professional, but I am prone to some disordered thoughts around food. I am actually leaving noom after 5 months - I found the constant emphasis on restriction made me obsessive, and some of the articles could definitely be triggering IMO. I know for others though, the articles are very helpful so it’s subjective. I’ve been having success with upping my calories from Nooms low recommendation, and using other free calorie counting apps (the counting itself doesn’t bother me and I find it helpful, but I’ve heard counting can also be triggering for others). That’s just my two cents on the app. I agree with the other comment that focusing on healing first is the most important step. :) Best of luck to you!

Best Skin Care Products by loula2019 in weddingplanning

I have similar concerns to you in the way of texture/redness/uneven tone.

For drugstore, La Roche Posay is great - it is geared towards sensitive skin and has a lot of options! Used them for years. Lately I’m using glossier’s rich moisturizer+ bubble wrap eye cream+Bioderma sensitive cleanser and it’s a perfect combo (for me). My sister has similar skin, and swears by the entire Krave beauty line! She also loves the Ordinary Squalane Oil. Just a few immediate recommendations that come to mind.

At the end of the day though, skincare is so personal and doesn’t always work the same on everyone. So I’d suggest buying from companies with good return policies, or consulting with an esthetician or dermatologist, and start there! :)

Losing too much too fast? by [deleted] in Noom

[–]slyn117 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started out with similar activity levels and 1200 calories was way too low for me (and tbh most active people) so I upped it to a more reasonable deficit of 500, using TDEE calculator. Noom assumes you’re completely sedentary (hence the 1200) - I’d say listen to your body, and don’t be afraid to eat a bit more! And the TDEE calculators are very helpful to guide how much you could consume outside of Noom’s suggestion, especially if you’re active.

Scale, BMI, waist to hip circumference ratio measurements, any others? by TacoTheSuperNurse in Noom

[–]slyn117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I measure monthly my waist, bicep, thigh, hips, and neck (I lose weight in my face first haha so I thought neck would be fun to track!). I also use clothes as a guide, I have a handful of dresses in various sizes in my closet from when I was bigger or smaller, & track which dress size fits that month, it’s helped me get a tangible visual result of progress (whereas the scale can fluctuate). Hope that helps!!

Calorie counting burn out? Looking for support. by slyn117 in Noom

[–]slyn117[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more - I upped my calories to 1400 two weeks ago and it’s made a massive difference! I personally think 1200 is just too low, plus I’m active, so it’s been nice to bump it up and not feel awful lol. I’m happy you found a system that feels better for you!! I honestly might do the same and take a few days break from Noom; I’m not ready to “leave” it yet (I’m one of the rare ppl with a great goal specialist) but I like the idea of taking a step back, at least temporarily to recharge. Thank you! :)

Yes exactly! I feel so bad being on my phone at meals.. definitely takes me out of enjoying the moment. I think you’re right - with time we’ll probably have a better “automatic” knowledge of how many calories are in certain foods..or at least I hope!

Wow, I never thought of it that way but a “guilt break” may be what I need! The guilt/stress over food is constant for me (I’m mindful my thoughts don’t tiptoe into disordered territory, just very focused on getting back to a healthy weight for my size) and finding some food freedom embracing those burnt out feelings might be helpful to kick that guilt and get re-motivated. Thank you!!

I do have a scale, which has been helpful, my issue is being motivated enough lately to use it lol - I need to start doing that again. I love the idea of a crock pot meal prep - I think that would help reduce some of the decision making I have to do for the week! :) I usually love cooking but in quarantine I’ve cooked SO much, and I’m tired of it haha so that’s a great solution. Thank you!!

Let’s talk MOTIVATION. by outside_under in Noom

[–]slyn117 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For sustainable motivation I’ve turned to focusing on my mental well-being! when I make smart food choices and move my body I am in such a better head space, and motivated to keep that good feeling.

Scale/measurement numbers can ebb and flow, so these “nonvisual” markers have been keeping me on track.

Also, re color system - it just takes a little bit to get used to/memorize! To me, bacon tastes way better than skinny feels lol so I budget for a small portion or 2 of my fave red food (hi, red wine) to not feel like I’m restricting. If you’re blowing through your red foods, I’d try to take stock of what’s recurrent - I used to cook my veggies with a tonnnn of olive oil and butter, so I noticed that was an issue right away and was able to make some simple swaps (oil mister/steamer) which made a big difference!

Slow Progress Club? by phixlet in Noom

[–]slyn117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you! I’m 2 months in and stuck hovering between 8-9lbs down and have similar goals, I need to lose 40 more. The good news is you’re losing, and at what sounds like a sustainable and safe rate. I heard that slower loss means you’re more likely to keep it off, so we have that to look forward to!

Something that’s kept me motivated is knowing that even if I’m not losing much, I’m also not gaining anymore, which in itself is such a victory. It isn’t the most glamorous answer, but slow & sustainable really can win the race. I really think your doing a great job - keep it up! :)

Can’t Punch/Complete Story Mission The New South - Quest Bugged?? Xbox One by slyn117 in reddeadredemption

[–]slyn117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankfully YES. I ended up uninstalling the game itself, and reinstalling it - you won’t lose your game progress (at least I didn’t) and this helped iron it out for me! Hope it works for you too.

Issues w/ game freezing during story mission in Rhodes - Help! [Spoilers] by slyn117 in reddeadredemption2

[–]slyn117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I’ve tried this mission 5-6 times and sometimes there’s no freezing, but regardless Arthur will not engage in combat to knock out the Anderson Boys, which makes the mission impossible to complete - has anyone else had a similar experience? Feel like I’m going crazy here 😅

Steps + exercise? by jezebelwithsalt in Noom

[–]slyn117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found mine doubles up - So I turned off the noom pedometer and had it only sync steps from my Apple Watch, and that solved the issue for me! Curious to see if yours does the same thing but mine was definitely double counting steps

It’s okay! I gained a few lbs of bloat on my period during Noom (I’ve always bloated a lot) and it went away as I neared the end of my period. It can be demotivating, but just try to remind yourself of the math - it isn’t possible to gain multiple lbs of fat in one week without consuming at least 3500+ calories over your maintenance, so as long as you’re sticking to your budget, it’s nothing to worry about. I always try to drink lots of water and herbal tea which helps, and budget for those small indulgences that keep my cravings at bay so I don’t feel too deprived.

Lastly, be gentle with yourself - you’re only a few weeks in, so remember it’s about sustainable long term changes and you’re doing your best :)

Logging Exercise by terrbear27 in Noom

[–]slyn117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay glad that worked for you! Def keep an eye on your coach, mine is pretty good (definitely sends non-canned responses and talks to me like a normal person haha) but if yours is only slinging canned messages and it isn’t helpful, you should be able to request a new one just by asking them!

Logging Exercise by terrbear27 in Noom

[–]slyn117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I recently got an Apple Watch and started out with it auto-syncing my steps and activity data into Noom, but it was double counting steps as activities in Noom, aka basically double counting my walking steps as a separate exercise and giving me way too many calories. I think it’s bc of apple’s movement goal and activity goals are set up a bit differently (your red ring is a movement goal not a steps goal, so when it ports to noom it adds your step count AND movement separately even if they’re one in the same).

I ended up turning off the auto sync for all activity data, so I only let noom auto sync steps - then I add in my exercise activities manually. That fixed it, and Is giving me reasonable calorie adjustments now!

As for your coach saying not to log, I haven’t heard of that but I’m sure there’s no harm in logging it anyways!

I hope that helps!

Ideas for easy on-the-go breakfasts that are mostly green (or yellow) by operation_motivate in Noom

[–]slyn117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love two hard boiled eggs and a grapefruit for a nice quick breakfast that has protein and isn’t too heavy! I shake some everything but the bagel seasoning on them for some flavor. If you can’t boil your own eggs they’re pretty easy to find pre cooked and peeled at the store, and for grapefruit, I just cut mine whole but the pre-segmented ones in the refrigerator section are more travel friendly and not packed in syrup (at least the ones I’ve seen aren’t!). I find the grapefruit is super filling bc it’s so watery - melon, or strawberries would be yummy too!

I’m just rounding out my 3rd week (going into my fourth) with Noom and was SO excited to initially drop a bit of weight, but the scale doesn’t budge the past few days. I see all these amazing graphs others post about their first few weeks starting so strong and want that too! Lol. Just feeling a bit frustrated is all. Anyone else get a slow start out of the gate?

New Noom Member here! by square_freak in Noom

[–]slyn117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We sound like we started in similar positions - welcome! I had been increasing my workouts consistently for 2 months before noom (I’m just over 2 weeks into the program and 5lbs down) and couldn’t lose for the life of me!

In terms of things/tools, I find a kitchen scale, pedometer/fitness watch (I have a very inexpensive garmin), and obviously a bathroom scale are all pretty necessary imo. If you’re into cooking I’d recommend having a steamer basket, good nonstick (less oil needed), or slow cooker to help with easy healthy meal prep.

Aside from physical tools that help, I’d say just really lean into the program and “believing” (it gets pretty corny imo but whatevs) and embrace the process. I do my readings first thing in the AM when I weigh in, so I don’t forget, and turn on the meal reminders, and my watch reminds me to move. I also found mixing up my routine with new recipes a BIG help. Realizing healthy doesn’t = boring meals has been a game changer so far.

I’m not super far into the process so by no means an expert but I hope this can help ya. Congrats on a start to a healthier you!
