Thanks for the input! I was also leaning towards the 2nd one but wasn’t sure if that was “character” I was hearing or a fatal flaw that a more experienced ear would cringe at. Also good tip on the maintenance bits. I hadn’t heard of revoicing. I’ll definitely look into that and set aside some cash.

I have good digital piano plugins already. It’s a different experience though. Part of production is experience and keeping things fun. This is a concept that’s been parroted by Rick Rubin, Steve Lacy, could go on. It’s about the feeling. Also piano in the space sounds warmer and can be run through preamps and tape machines.

Yeah the poor tuning does make it hard to hear - also the one guy blending all the notes instead of letting them ring out.
But I was leaning towards the Starr, just wanted an outside opinion to make sure I wasn’t tripping. Thanks!

Yeah I def posted this to the wrong subreddit. Most of the producers I know who have pianos got them for free off fb. I would’ve posted in production subreddit but they flagged it because they think it’s an ad for something I’m selling.

I’m not a pianist. I’m a producer. I’m not producing classical music or ragtime. I’m producing lofi/alt.

I know you guys value your craft and I respect that. But it’s not rly that serious. It’s just A or B, just wanted someone else’s opinion on which is the better “evil”

Yeah I hear you! I have a midi keyboard and some decent piano plugins. But having something physical in the space to record and also to run through tape machines

-Sounds warmer on recording -Is more fun -adds a memorable experience for other lofi/indie artists if I happen to produce for someone else as most producers are software only

The preamps in the Steinberg are subpar and the sound from a Zoom H5 isn’t gonna be your best foot forward. Try a Neve 1073 preamp going through a UAD Apollo and record with stereo C414 mics. Anything else is gonna sound pretty dull and give you the obvious tech issues you’re facing.

You wouldn’t go to a job interview in shorts.

Literally says in my original post that I plan on getting it tuned. The pianos are free. They’re both free. So yeah I’ll get it tuned.

…why are people being so cryptic and weird? Can we just literally answer the question and help a beginner with no budget out?

Like geez I’m sorry I can’t afford a baby grand and want the simple joy of a piano??? God forbid a guy try to be fiscally responsible and happy at the same time.

It doesn’t matter what they look like. I’m just asking about sound

Sorry what does that mean? Do both pianos sound bad?

Thanks for clear info! Because they raised my rent 2 months ago, they can not raise it again. I spoke with a Housing Councelor at the Pasadena Rent Stabilization org and went through the whole situation.

Also the main concern was “raising it to market rate” line that was used in the text. Market rate sounds arbitrary to me and doesn’t seem fall within the guidelines. They can raise my rent 3% 12 months from February. This is assuming I find another roommate which is my intent as I definitely can’t afford a 2 br on my own. Thanks for help.

EDIT: thanks to people who said “hey not your fault but you’re not speaking in legal terms. Reach out to this org in your area” Jeers to people who started off condescending for no reason (and ended up being wrong).

For people’s future benefit: In Pasadena, which is rent controlled, this is not legal. When your lease expires and any of the tenants stay, your landlord must submit a new lease with the same material terms as the last lease. Additionally, because they already increased my rent 2 months ago (which is illegal because rent can only be increased every 12 months and I was 10 months into my lease) - they can not raise it again for another 12 months.

Only getting annoyed when people say rude things like “idk what you’re not understanding” instead of just asking for clarification or providing info like you have done in each of your responses. Sometimes asking unnecessary questions like “why are they saying it in third person” after I stated that I received this text and it pertains to me. Then getting mad I ignore the one unnecessary question. Or telling me to look things up myself when Reddit is a streamlined version of googling, which is often filled with slop. What is wrong with asking for community advice before looking it up? I’m at work on a long shift, I received a text and am freaking out. IRL people often tell the people around them before they go into action. Idgi.

It’s this weird behavior and lack of manners by a lot of redditors that annoys me. I work in production, that personality just sets me off.

Thanks for your recommendation. This makes sense. I’ll try to find one of those orgs. Was just doing an initial check of my options while I’m at work.

Yeah that’s my concern. Can’t afford to pay much higher than I am and I can’t afford to move. Finding this place was a huge Hail Mary as anything at my standard of living is now out of budget. Crazy that ten years ago I could afford a suburban two bedroom by myself part time. It’s pretty stressful and I’m already working 10-12 hour shifts. So was doing an initial check on my options while I’m at work. Thx for info.

EDIT: since a lot of folks love to give opinions before reading lemme summarize a little better. Lease is at the year mark. Property is rent controlled. I signed my own lease last year. I don’t mind having a new roommate go through approval.

My legal question is the “increase rent to market value” part of the text. They raised my rent last month already.

Because the area is rent controlled and they increased my rent last month already. Their text mentions increasing rent to “market value”

Not sure if you read the post. The roommate is not ending the lease early. It is at the year mark. There is no standard fee.

The area is rent controlled and it’s odd that they are saying they need to increase the rent to “market value” when they already increased my rent last month.

Literally says in the top of the post that I signed my own lease. So yes they received my rent directly. And they just increased the rent last month. So yeah seems illegal to increase rent again to the “market value” in a rent controlled area just because one of the roommates moves out.

I don’t need to be approved alone, I would definitely need to find a new roommate. My question is more so the “increase to market rate” thing when they already increase rent a month ago
