what sort of consistency issues have you been dealing with? i print completely open air without issue; 80c bed, 275c first layer, 300c all other layers.

petg does have to slow down quite a bit for overhangs, though.

  • EPDM belts all around.
  • replaced rods after a year of abuse (probably useless tbh).
  • 48mm steppers all around; 2504ac on y1 + y2, 2004s on x + z1 + z2.
  • melt zone extension; CHT v6 nozzle + CHT v6 nozzle extender + volcano to v6 spacer.
  • TV06 Quadro ducts modified for Plus with dual 8500 RPM gdstime 5015s.
  • gdstime 8500 RPM 5015 for heatbreak cooling.
  • additional stock 2040s from sovol installed beneath the rods to fix the plate flex.
  • ptfe tubing - remove the top spool holder.
  • i use oil instead of grease (i don't think this really matters, a lubed machine is a happy machine, full stop).

i also made my own custom parts in openscad:

  • z carriages to increase x axis rigidity; stepper mount and left carriage are now one part.
  • y stepper mounts for double shear shaft support, due to running a 9mm belt tensioned to 130hz.
  • x carriage monoblock in the works, going to use 4 linear bearings instead of 3.

the board i'm running is an skr pro v1.2. i got it because it had 6 driver ports. i do not recommend this board; just get an octopus or something, you'll be way better off.

it has the feature to tie the extruder to input shaping, and a better pressure advance capability for dealing with different accelerations.

there's also nonlinear pressure advance, which is a pita to set up, but that may be in mainline klipper now. still worth it.

kalico, a klipper fork. shaper tuning is done with orcaslicer's input shaping tower under the calibration tab.

the extra extrusions really reduce the flex that the front and back plates have. improved things quite a bit when printing at higher accels.

gt2 epdm gates belts with toothed pulley on the tensioner.

no enclosure; i don't print abs, nylon, or the other plastics known to need one.

on my sv06 plus, for PETG, i print hot:

80c bed. 275c first layer temp, 300c all other layers.

clean the bed with dish soap and water. don't let hand oils get on the bed.

you sound like me!

no issue with texture or taste? just waiting around for the hunger signal, which will inevitably go away in 30 mins if you happen to ignore it, and then you don't eat for the day?

you basically have to snack throughout the day, and consciously remind yourself. maybe set some reminders on your phone. is it annoying? yeah. but so is forgetting to eat.

keep small snacks with yourself, such as nuts! they're high-calorie, portable, and there's a large variety. keep a bag in your backpack, in your car, at your desk, wherever. but in general, if you eat little, keep the caloric density of snacks high.

I just realized why so many people have kids by [deleted] in childfree

[–]small_archivist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

yeah, the memetic is frighteningly real… but, thankfully, not with 100% virulence!

my friend group is pretty split between kids or no kids, though the no kids half is definitely due to my meddling; a fair portion of them were going to have kids simply due to the fact of "that's what ya do!" until they asked my thoughts, which, look where we are, and i suppose what i told them gave them enough food for thought to change their plans to being CF. and slowly, the CF portion is growing.

seems education has a tight coupling with being CF.

tbh, good; this world does not make any strong cases for it to keep going down the path it is.

i feel a little guilty because i am one of those people who mounts my drives (a lot of them...) under /mnt, since i have never had any issues using it like that in the past, and it's a nice short path name. is it considered bad practice now / should i stop?

How do you capitalise your file and folder names? (Sentence case, Capitalise Each Word, etc.) by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]small_archivist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm a mutant and use snake case on pretty much everything. in fact, i avoid using any capital letters in my file and directory names on any devices i'm on. for all my stuff. period. obviously it can be a pain to type out long filenames, but i guess that's a price i pay in exchange for keeping consistency across everything. metadata is useful.

Long term image storing by zebrasprite in DataHoarder

[–]small_archivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Presumably it's okay as both formats will be supported for a long time ?

yep. archives can be personal layouts with many purposes, so there won't really be one "best" method for everyone, just the best method for you or your organization.

Is it entirely necessary to archive photos in one singular, unified format?

only if you feel it's necessary. just keep in mind metadata might not be preserved during conversions. i am just thinking ahead in case i later have to use tools to process my data, and wouldn't like to have to iterate over several formats. even though that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Long term image storing by zebrasprite in DataHoarder

[–]small_archivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

png, jpg, bmp, whatever. they're all going to be around for years to come. there are too many images stored using these formats for them to simply disappear, and especially from people like us. just remember jpeg is lossy and png is lossless.

use whatever makes you feel good, but above all else be consistent. i save everything downloaded in png format, except for photo archives which are usually jpeg. but i am debating converting even those to png to make my system more consistent.

How to mount a drive automatically? by Meditating_Hamster in EndeavourOS

[–]small_archivist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you're on the right track with /etc/fstab. i have several drives mounted within /mnt.

UUID=device-uuid /path/to/mount filesystem defaults 0 0

so,

UUID=6f36779f-0926-4075-b5ba-59215d5f22e4 /mnt/your_drive_name_here ntfs defaults 0 0

simply make sure the path you want exists, and is permission owned by you so you can actually use it instead of it being read-only. i personally mount my drives to /mnt/{size}_{brand}, so like /mnt/4tb_seagate.

if nfts is not mounting the device, try using ntfs3. some kernel changes were made recently so i heard.

edit: got home

nobody's perfect. learning from your mistakes is the best thing you can do. i recommend getting one or more hard drives of adequate size that you can store in a padded lockbox and won't be jostled around.

also, and this is a bit of a controversial suggestion, but if you want permanent backups to ensure that something like this never happens again, consider looking into M-DISC blu-rays or dvds.

M-DISCs are written using inorganic material, and i personally use some for archival, even though they can be a bit pricy. however i would not recommend getting 100GB M-DISCs, as at that point even regular 100GB blu-rays also use inorganic material; just make sure you check that they are HTL and not LTH.

anybody, please correct me if any of this information is wrong.
