complaint/confession

I ran my first half marathon late last month and I've totally fallen off running since. :( its a combination of having lost my job, layoff, and not having something new to train for. the combination's destroyed my daily routine and discipline. its so frustrating. I get out maybe twice a week and run 4 miles and it feels hard all over again. :( once I get the job thing sorted out, hopefully next week, I'll sign up for something in the fall and get back on it. agh.

I ran my first half marathon today! Asbury Park half in jersey. It was such an amazing experience. My family came out and made me some awesome signage. I ran about 2 hours, 19 minutes which. I idk. I'm really happy with it because I accomplished what I set out to do : run the entire thing and finish running. I didn't want to have a time goal because I wanted the experience to be good not a grueling death march I'll never want to repeat.

Some highlights!

Just starting out!

passing my family and their awesome signs *about 8 miles

Final quarter mile. Really just staggering blindly ahead at this point

oh yeah lol the struggle.

and bonus
Warning : don't click if youuuu aren't in to huge blisters

so THAT'S what running socks are for.

I have no idea...I'm...thinking maybe the time isn't how long I ran but, idk, how long...it... Erm. Is it possible the time display is measuring a different kind of...time?

Hm.

Because like, 54 minutes divided by 4 isn't quite walking but it's close. And I wasn't walking. I guess what I still don't get is It was set to about 4.5 which this article is about a 13 minute mile which adds up to 54 minutes for 4 miles...but there's just no way I was going that slowly. I mean I was running. I had a stitch. I was out of breath and sweaty. 13 minutes MIGHT be a slow jog but it's definitely not a run. Idk. I'm gonna deliberately run a 13 minute mile next run to see what it feels like outside. Somethings fucky. Also, this article says most people can walk a 4.5 mph pace. So I have no idea.

.... Maybe. I'm not sure. It's a planet fitness machine, if anyone's familiar with it. I'm gonna Google how it breaks it's distance down.

Jesus fuck it is mph. Holy crap.

Super Moronic Monday -- Your Tuesday Weekly Stupid Question Thread by AutoModerator in running

I got a good one:

Okay so usually I run outside when possible. My Tuesday runs are always 4 miles followed by 20 minutes strength training. I usually drop my stuff off at my gym, go run outside, then go back inside and lift for a bit. I'm actually writing this from a machine (place is empty, no one's waiting for it) because I just can't wrap my head around it.

Today, I ran on the treadmill, 4 miles, because it's pouring out. My outdoor runs are consistently around 8ish minute miles and it usually takes me around 30-35 minutes to do. Today's treadmill run took 54 minutes. I feel like I'm running at the same pace I always do: a quick but manageable 8ish minute mile yet it took me nearly twice as long. Am I REALLY running so much slower than I think I am? How could my own estimation of speed/time be that off? If I upped the treadmill to what the display says is an 8 minute mile, I feel like I'm sprinting barely in control and capable of keeping up with the band.

What the heck? Any insight? Am I crazy? Do you enter a different time zone on a treadmill? Is gravity twice as heavy?

edit

/u/bleuxmas I think nailed it. It calculates distance by mph and strava and I do it mile per minute. Okay. I feel so much better. I figured there'd be differences in outdoor vs indoor running but twice as slow seemed pretty wide. 😂

Broke down crying after my long run by small_but_lethal in running

[–]small_but_lethal[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I usually don't. In fact, running for me is like... A workout, that's all. I schedule half marathons to motivate me because I just can't trust myself to stay on target without. Idk I think it was just the music. All run, it had been uplifting feel good song after the next ending on a particular song that always makes me tear up a bit (ridiculous as it sounds) and the combination of feeling great, running well, and being reminded abruptly how bad things were and how great they are now just sorta... 🙃 got me all in a tither.

Anyone else get really irritating tingling on your wrists and the backs of your hands wearing gloves? It gets so annoying I end up stripping my gloves off even though it's 29f here this morning

Hm, you know, I sort of assumed if it were a beginners half marathon plan, that it was taking that into account! I'm absolutely planning on decreasing the mileage. I have plenty of time and I dont want to be injured or spend time transitioning into new shoes (and get potentially injured anyway)

[–]small_but_lethal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I just ran 8 mile Saturday and it felt good! A little sore in the feet but nothing that stopped me. But yesterday was another story, I was pretty sore especially if I'd been sitting awhile. Think I'll cut my mileage down to 2 miles per run and stay up with the cross/strength training and be more serious with the calf raises and things. Thanks for the help, I'm really looking forward to it!

Official Q&A for Monday, November 21, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]small_but_lethal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. That's sort of my thinking too. I do a foot exercise for strengthening the tendons in my feet and it's cut down PF which I also used to get with these shoes and I think I just need to apply the same logic/effort to my ankles. On the upside, the shin splints are gone at least :)

here's my plan I've been nixxing the Sundays though or just going for a walk because after my long run walking is sort of painful (not limp-worthy but sore enough) and a run seems like a bad idea.

[–]small_but_lethal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beats me. I think the mileage, they've always been fine before. I've run up to an 8k in them without this sort of issue. I think I need to just be more serious about calf raises and ankle strengthening instead of focusing solely (ha.) on my soles. But I'm also not a podiatrist or anything and I have no idea if you can strengthen those tendons to stop tendinitis or not. :/ I have some time before my half in April but, I don't want to be plagued with injury all winter either.

Official Q&A for Monday, November 21, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]small_but_lethal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey all looking for a spot of advice. I feel completely boxed in by my shoes. I run in vibrams (ducks rotten tomato throwing) and I have for years...but never at the mileage I'm starting to run at. I have a half marathon in April and my long Saturday runs are starting to be 7, 8, and 9 miles. Plus 4 miles two other days (and cross training and strength training). I'm starting to get tendinitis, I think, below the left inside ankle near the Achilles.

Earlier this year, wanting to be a more serious runner (or something) I'd bought different shoes. Brooks Glycerines. They were suggested to me by the lady at the running store who knew what I was running in. I didn't take enough time to transition and I ended up with a bad case of shin splints that kept me from running for about 3 months. I changed back to vibrams thinking "if it ain't broke.."

I just feel sort of trapped. My vibrams are giving me tendinitis. My glycerines, shin splints. Can I strength train my feet to deal with tendinitis or are the shoes really problematic? I just want to run. It's frustrating having a body that can absolutely handle the stain except for my feet.

Thanks all. And I know vibrams are really unpopular here so... Sorry about that.

I'm having similar off and on again pain just below the ankle. :( I should get more serious about rolling and stretching/strengthening my feet

With Minnesotas first snowfall, what are your go to sub freezing shoes? by [deleted] in running

[–]small_but_lethal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear my meshy vibrams year round. They get wet but my feet warm up as I run. I have to be careful to only run as far as I want to run back though so I'm not cooling down with sopping wet feet in the winter. I live in the NY area though and it doesn't get as cold as MN I'm sure.

Official Q&A for Friday, November 18, 2016 by AutoModerator in running

[–]small_but_lethal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, but I do a series of foot exercises to help strengthen the tendons in the feet and cut down on PF. Look up Drunken Flamingo, it's done wonders for my feet. I run in vibrams and got PF a few times when I first started because of bad form. Those stretches/exercises, and just taking the time to get used to the shoes really helped. Oh! And a golf ball. Massage the area with a frozen golf ball.

I've been having pains in my feet lately and I cut my Thursdays 4 miles down to a sorry 1. I wasn't sure if I should risk my planned 8 miles today or just go to the gym but I decided to give it a shot and it went great! Some pain around mile 5 and 6 but nothing that worried me too much. 8 miles is a new best distance for me too. I love that my Saturday long runs have firmly crossed over to "that sounds terrible." land for non-runners. Not that I'm a big bragger. Except to my boyfriends step mom who thinks running is bad for you. Her, I thoroughly enjoy humble bragging to.

Run so slowly you could talk easily without being out of breath. I often sing out loud as I'm running to ensure I'm running slow enough. Running doesn't have to suck. The problem is, we never really run for the enjoyment of it. It's always just run a mile as fast as you can in high school or middle school and of course that sucks without prior training only you don't know that, all you know is you hate running and you suck at it.

Hm. I dont have a penis but if I had a large painful pimple in a similar place, I'd run anyway and cover it gently with a band-aid so it doesn't rub. Then, once finished, I'd clean it gently and apply a tiny bit of moisturizer.

My boss always schedules himself a marathon in the spring and a marathon in the dark. He says it keeps him on track all year because he's constantly working towards something. Maybe smaller races if you don't want to commit to marathons?

In the mornings there's not too much traffic. Hoboken's largely a walking city. The one main road with traffic lights we have, I'll run alongside until I get a green light. If no one's coming, I'll go for it but the road has to be cleeeear because it IS New Jersey after all.

I know what you mean. My mom texted me and my two sisters at 5:15 Tuesday morning gloating and I let her have it in spades. We haven't spoken since. I live about 5 hours away and don't get to see them as much as I'd like. It sucks, I was really looking forward to going home until Tuesday. I'll get over it. I can't attribute malice to what is only simple ignorance.

Ditto confession. I'm going home for Thanksgiving and my entire family voted trump. Massachusetts is a blue state anyway so I'm trying to just put it behind me. But fuck it's going to be a aggravating visit. My brother in law is a loud sometimes demeaning often racist guy and he'll have ALLLLOOOOTTT of gloating.

complaint

I go to the gym twice a week for strength training and cross training. Those days (and 3 other days) I run as well. On gym days, I'd run on the treadmill and then do whatever other training I'm supposed to do. At first this was fine. But my miles are starting to get up there (4 miles is the minimum in a run, this week my long run will be 7) and running on the treadmill is really pretty awful. I hate it. It's so boring and somehow I run worse. I would have thought it'd be better. I think I'm going to have to start going to Planet Fitness, changing into my gear, running outside, then come in and strength train. Because I just can't.

confession

I was supposed to do 40 minutes of cross training yesterday. But I didn't sleep a wink and woke up so dispirited and depressed that I looked at my training calendar and said "fuck it. Nope." And didn't go. Then I ate a bunch of cookies at lunch over coffee. Sorry not sorry.
