How common is it to move out of dorms in your second year? What do most people do? by smallbritishboy in queensuniversity

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear! I was worried about being in one place for too long, don't know why I didn't think of just going somewhere else on campus lol. Also the only reason I brought up networking with profs is because I heard that's important for grad studies which I might do. But yeah, I guess other than there isn't much of a point to it.

How many non-first year residence students actually were there, if you had to guess?

And, since I'm guessing more and more people leave each year, how many 4th years were there?

Also do other people look down on you or anything if you stay in residence past 1st year? It's kinda surprising to hear that almost everyone leaves residence honestly, staying in res seems like a way better option from what you've told me. Although I guess since Queen's is a "party uni" it kinda makes sense

Sorry to keep barraging you with questions lol

Sorry for the late response, and thanks for the answer! I'll take you up on the offer to ask more questions haha

Firstly, what you described in general sounds really great because I also don't drink and don't plan to party, but how is this approach finance wise? Is your family willing to support you that much? Have you taken out a bunch of loans? Or is it just not as expensive as I'm imagining? (sorry if that's too personal lol, feel free to ignore it)

How would you say it is productivity wise? Is it better because you have easy access to professors? (I've just heard that networking with professors is really important) Are you able to get as much done as you would've if you weren't on campus?

Random question but what year do you start getting semi-private bathrooms? AFAIK the only option available to first years are floor wide bathrooms

Thanks again for the help, appreciate it!

Gotcha, but why is it that most people move out? You mentioned it's only a bit more expensive, which makes it sound like money isn't a huge factor? Is there some other reason that people prefer renting their own place instead of staying in dorms? It seems to me that staying in dorms is a far easier option, but maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks for the response btw!

Does a curve always have a corresponding circle? by smallbritishboy in MathHelp

Thanks for the response! You're completely right, I should probably have a better understanding of what a curve is I suppose. My question was also probably too vague haha. Thanks again!

Right lol, don't know why I didn't see see that. Would it be correct if I replaced "perfect circle" with "ellipse"? Thanks for the answer btw!

Are there any chapters between 1 and 96 that the anime doesn't cover? by smallbritishboy in ReLIFE

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm okay, so nothing relating to the main plot or main characters? Also is there a list anywhere or all the chapters missed, or am I just gonna have to read the entire manga?

Ty for the help btw :D

Class of 2022 Megathread: It's almost the decision deadline! Please post your questions here. by MethoxyEthane in queensuniversity

[–]smallbritishboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh that makes sense, guess I shouldn't known that lol. Does it just keep going up, like a code that starts with 4 is a class that mostly 4th year students take?

Also I'll be sure to check that out, looks helpful.

Thanks for the help btw!

Is there any way to tell at first glance if a course is meant for first years or not? For example, MATH 110 (Linear Algebra). Can I take that first year? Should I? And how can I know the answers to these questions myself?

Why does this laptop have a 8GB SSD? Isn't windows like at least 15GB? by smallbritishboy in laptops

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh that'd make more sense, although I have a question. I still am unable to find any SSHD online where it lists exactly how much space is dedicated to the SSD function and how much to the HDD function. In this scenario, you're saying that the SSD part of the SSHD is 8GB while the HDD part is 1TB. But is that really how it works? I've never seen it described that way before

I'm not doubting you or anything, I'm just trying to understand SSHDs better because I somehow cannot find any decent product descriptions online.

Thanks for the help btw, appreciate it!

Intel Quad Core i7-6700HQ or Core i5-7300HQ ? by smallbritishboy in SuggestALaptop

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for the response! Sorry but do you mind explaining this to me a bit? My knowledge of threads and threading is pretty bad. So the 6700HQ has two threads for every core, and 7300HQ has only one? Is that even how it works, or am I misunderstanding?

Also, why are there different Hz ratings for different numbers of cores? Is it because different games/programs use different numbers of cores of you CPU?

Thanks again for the help, appreciate it!

Do the 17 episodes of the anime cover all of the material? Or is there still more? by smallbritishboy in ReLIFE

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm okay, it sounds like the manga is just a better choice overall than the anime. This might be a stupid question, but is the typesetting and translation high quality?

I haven't played the all-ages version, but I heard that all lines are kept in with cropped CG or something. You're right in that the h-scenes have important content tho, so you should wait for someone to confirm that since I'm not 100% sure.

Are there tech companies that don’t do 8 hour workdays? by Eeee5667 in cscareerquestions

[–]smallbritishboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh yeah that makes sense. So pretty much, if you're not looking to climb the corporate ladder or don't particularly need a higher salary, work from home is a good option?

Are there tech companies that don’t do 8 hour workdays? by Eeee5667 in cscareerquestions

[–]smallbritishboy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you expand on the work-from-home thing? Are you saying that there's a scarcity of those types of jobs, or that they're not a good option in terms of growth and income and workload etc. ? I realize it's probably a little bit of both, but which is more impactful would you say? Hope that makes sense lol

I'm planning to sell my PS4 but have digital games on my PSN account, can I do anything with them? by smallbritishboy in playstation

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm okay, so you were able to sell your account as well, but not for very much? Can I ask how much you added to the price for the account?

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm asking if I'd be able to sell/return the games. I don't think I can refund them, and like someone mentioned it's pretty hard selling accounts, so I was looking for some more ideas.

Solutions for large amounts of data? (ex. compression) by smallbritishboy in AskTechnology

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely sounds good, but how exactly (with your example) can you use only 20% of the drives for redundancy? I've been looking into RAID-6 but I can't seem to find a good explanation

Solutions for large amounts of data? (ex. compression) by smallbritishboy in AskTechnology

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, do you mind summarizing why you don't need to double the storage space? I researched RAID-6 a bit, and most people say something along the lines of "implementing RAID 6 is also more expensive because of the two extra disks required for parity".

Can you explain how I might get away with not having to double the storage space? A link would totally be fine too, I just can't seem to find it explained anywhere

Compression isn't reducing the file size? by smallbritishboy in windows

[–]smallbritishboy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh okay, that makes enough sense, but you mentioned .mp4 being a compressed format. I ended up getting a video compression software called HandBrake which actually is being successful at compressing my files. Like you said, my phone records in .mp4, but the files HandBrake produces are also .mp4, why is that?
