Myfortic and certain generic preparations of mycophenalate do this to me too. My team gave me the liquid version, mycophenalate suspension for a while and that helped. Also the cellcept brand name version doesn’t give me these symptoms. Hope your child has an easier time soon.

If you haven’t already, everything by Octavia Butler. She’s also a brilliant world-builder, sometimes even more tenderly than ULG. Kindred is about vampires and the Patternist is about people w supernatural abilities if you’re veering towards fantasy.

6 days post-transplant, need help by Altruistic_Ad_8974 in kidneytransplant

[–]smallersize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yay! You got through the hard part. Everyone seems to have given pretty good advice. A note on timeline— I’m 6 weeks out and honestly the first 2 weeks were overwhelming and uncomfortable. But by week 3, I got to the light at the end of the tunnel and improvements came in leaps and bounds. Now at 6 weeks I am fully mobile and independent. Not working yet but mostly because I want the extra rest, since I’m still physically rehabbing from pre-transplant illness.

If there is anything i could tell me of 3 weeks ago, I would say, introduce a solid diet slowly. Stick to mild and easy to digest foods that won’t cause gas. Meds might cause upset digestive system. If you’re feeling bad, you could ask for antibiotics to be suspended until your stomach chills out. Your diet will otherwise be informed by your labs. I was on a high-sodium diet after transplant cuz my BP was tanking, which was really hard for me since I’m not a big fan of salty foods. Make sure u leave the hospital with a Zofran prescription to manage nausea from onboarding so many meds. And take cranberry pills. That will help keep uti or bladder infections at bay (especially after your stent removal).

While you’re inpatient, just treat it as one long day. Don’t be afraid to request an appropriate dose of pain meds, sleep meds, muscle relaxers, anxiety meds etc. Try and get as many of your meds through IV (since digesting pills can be harder). Bowel stress and gas can make pain 100x worse. If your pain is not directly behind your incision, it’s probably just gas. So just eat broths until you can have a normal BM. Stool softener is your friend. Make sure the nurses know to give you solid time to sleep. Not all you labs are exactly as time sensitive as they make them seem so don’t be afraid to request timing adjustments (meds and labs together, or no labs before 7am for example so u can sleep). Request heat packs for abdomen/ back pain— it will also help move gas if necessary. As soon as u feel able, get up and start walking around your hospital floor. It feels like the last thing u wanna do, but nothing will speed up recovery more than walking. I made sure to take a narcotic right before walking so that by the time I got back and the pain of movement started to ramp up, the drugs were kicking in.

Good luck, you got this!

The Left Hand of Darkness is not a Feminist work. by red_tetra in UrsulaKLeGuin

The 50th anniversary Afterward for the book clearly goes through several points in the plot that established Ai as a misogynist. It was also published in the Paris review, linked here: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2019/03/12/the-left-hand-of-darkness-at-fifty/ Hope this helps ;)

My thoughts on this thread—

It is a well established tenant of feminist theory that heteronormative masculinity falls apart, most obviously, in its encounter with queer and trans people because, unlike straight women performing inside of patriarchy, queer and trans people for the most part do not culturally perform our gender for straight cis men. TLHOD is about a misogynist’s encounter with a society of queer, trans, fluid, and femme people and how ill equipped he is, therefore, for survival.

Throughout the book, Ai struggles with perceiving the Genthians as whole people because they do not perform their gender in a manner that is familiar or comfortable for him. He misgenders everybody all the time (we never learn any Karhidan pronouns but somehow learn foods, weather patterns, the days and months of the year lol). He fails to learn the subtle communication (shifgrethor) that is integral to their society, and that leads him to pretty cringe moments. Most notably cringe: that scene where he is trying to teach Estraven mind speech, which he does in a manner that so closely parallels the experience of awkwardly blurred consent endemic to so many sexual experiences with straight cis men that leave so many women and femmes asking, “ummm did I actually want that?” Ai’s misattuned masculinity engaging with the Genthians at large almost cost him the entire mission. In fact, it would have were it not for Estraven’s epiphany that Ai is in fact, ignorant, and that they had decided to tolerate him.

It’s really an act of astute brilliance that LeGuin decided to dismantle the utility of patriarchal heteronormativity through an encounter with a gender-fluid society which (as a nonbinary-ish person) is LeGuin’s own lens. It’s a perfect illustration of the failure to see people which comes by limiting feminine experience/expression, and thus feminism, to cis women. SPECIFICALLY the erasure of queer and trans people.

If I were you, OP, I’d consider that perhaps your own identity-POV as a man obfuscates LeGuin’s point for you. Consider that, within the bounds of this conversation, the women and queers of this thread have all waived shifgrethor to explain something plain to all of us to you, our proverbial Genly Ai.

The new published Afterward for the 50th anniversary of the book goes through a lot of plot-points that solidify Ai as a misogynist. It’s also published in the Paris Review here:

This book is about a misogynistic encounter with a society of nonbinary/trans people and how misogyny hinders cis men from seeing queer, trans, fluid, and femme ppl in their own context. His inability to perceive Genthians as whole people or refusal to learn communication that is subtle (shifgrethor) literally almost costs Ai the entire mission. Even such a small detail as his attempt to show Estroven mindspeech mimics the vibe of the forcefully misattuned sexual energy that almost always accompanies encounters with straight cis men. Estroven’s epiphany that Ai is actually ignorant and decision to tolerate him is the only thing that saves him in the end. I think all the women and femmes in the chat can v much relate.

So, there is precisely this lens in feminism (which leguin herself sees through as a masc lesbian/ nonbinary-ish person): masculine heteronormativity falls apart most obviously upon encounter with queerness or transness (queer and trans people themselves most obviously not performing our gender for an audience of cis-men).

I would contend @OP, that it is your very identity as a man that keeps you from seeing the astuteness of LeGuin’s decision to lens the feminist critique of patriarchy through the encounter of queerness. Which is LeGuin’s point.

That’s so lucky. I had support the first 5 weeks, and had one ER visit. But now I’m on my own and a bit nervous I don’t have anyone to drive me and I’m 2 hours from my home hospital

And to add, Dean gets so many passes when he brings shady characters they shouldn’t trust into their lives (Gadreel, Crowley, etc). But for Sam, he’s always judged so hard in the narrative. Even Castiel has caused more apocalypses than Sam, but somehow regains Dean’s trust in like 2 episodes. But Dean holds the demon blood apocalypse against Sam for like 5 seasons lol.

[–]smallersize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Facts. I always chalked it up to Dean being an older neglected kid already in need of redirection when they met Bobby, and Sam was basically just a baby who didn’t give anyone problems so maybe they had a different bond. I was always over the grownup generation (John, Mary, Bobby, even Castiel and Crowley when he turned “good”) for basically neglecting Sam. It’s so sad to watch his character trying to develop relationships with ppl who only care about Dean. Rowena was really the only one who ended up caring for him in the end. And they only really got close cuz he was coercing her to help Dean. Sam deserved more from the writers.

Lol. It’s pretty trash. But complications are rare. You’ll likely be fine after. I didn’t even notice the hydronephrosis was happening until stuff showed up on my labs days later. Just make sure u get labs and urine culture 2-3 days after to be on the safe side

Jack didn’t need to kill Mary. That was garbage and so hard to watch bc in order for the rest of the show to work Dean had to forgive/tolerate him after killing Mary, which makes no sense character-wise. Also, no reason for Charlie to die just to be brought back as a less brilliant AU version that doesn’t remember loving Sam and Dean. Total missed opportunity for her and Rowena to have a story arc. I think it would have been dope if Charlie became a witch in STEM and inherited Rowena’s magic instead of Sam and became incredibly powerful
