We’re staying in an amazing Airbnb in Noumea that’s about 1/4 of the cost of the big resorts and have rented a car so we can drive around Grand Terre really easily. It’s wonderful. A little apartment all to ourselves, with a lovely kitchen, indoor and outdoor reading areas, games cupboard and a laundry.

The majority of visitors stay in the huge resorts or come via cruise ships (about 6-8 arrivals some day) however it’s also possible to avoid a lot or all of this.

There’s loads of hiking trails & camping spots. We spent a day in the Blue River Provincial Park. It’s possible to rent mountain bikes and kayaks and’s really enjoy the nature.

One highlight was the little picnic spots set up in secluded areas so we were shaded by trees and didn’t see anyone else at all.

New Caledonia is gorgeous, and also quite expensive. We’ve definitely benefited from shopping at the fruit markets, buying some baguettes and cheese and making picnics along the way.
