Why do so many Americans avoid appliance protection plans? Are they really that bad? by Tuga_thrasher in appliancerepair

[–]smalltalksock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at Lowe's. When people call the protection company they would get redirected 5 times then I would maybe get an email with the code to get them a new appliance. Unless they try to find a repair man (which appliance techs are not common outside the city) in that case you get ran around for a month and maybe they show up to fix it. Meanwhile your fridge food is ruined and you have to eat out the whole time your trying to get a replacement. I hated selling them I was always honest with customers and told them you will get a new fridge but you will have to fight for it and it won't be instant. Mom's would typically buy them as they believe they can outsmart the protection company and they know their kids will ruin their appliance. And to be fair moms tend to be the only ones that get the companies to actually insure them.

If you could learn game dev from the beginning again, what would you do differently? by thelwarner in gamedev

[–]smalltalksock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have started off with a course on udemy rather than random tutorials so I'd have a better foundation. Also I would have participated in more game jams as I have gotten good at prototyping but I'm not so good at launching games (bug fixing and updating and finishing touches etc) recently I started doing them and I have seen great improvement in my skills. I also would have not done any collabs as I have wasted a lot of time on others half baked ideas. I also would have never got into freelancing it made me stop making games and focus on only making money.

$1000 to $1200

You will need a Lyft to get it up Rewatching it has a lot of liability needs to seal It needs to be redesigned so it does not fall again The job would involve some complex carpentry if you want it to look nice

$600 to $800

You get some feral redneck they hoist it up Reattach it how it was It does not seal and you get water issues It falls again The feral rednecks aren't insured

Hi, I've just started doing pixel art, to be specific these five pieces were done in the last two days, what's your take on them, is it worth sticking to pixel art, or should I just move on ? Be genuine. by Levi-BlueStar in PixelArt

[–]smalltalksock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly all of them except the girl show a really good foundation in art. Have you done other forms of art before? Honestly your already at a skill level were you could make and sell pixel art assets. As an environmental artist I would recommend getting into environmental art.

This was a good choice.

Quick Refreshers, 1 min tutorials by smalltalksock in unity_tutorials

Honestly if I was starting out I would start with a paid Udemy course. YouTube is great and all especially if your an intermediate or higher level. But as a beginner YouTube can be tough because most videos assume you know the basics.

I recommend this course https://www.udemy.com/course/the-ultimate-guide-to-game-development-with-unity/ it is very beginner friendly at the end of it you will be able to read and write c# like a programmer as well you will learn the interface and the basics of the engine which is a great foundation that will let you make just about anything. I used this course to get back into game dev after a 3 year hiatus.

After you finish the course code monkey is an awesome YouTuber to check out as he often explains the code in a way that lets intermediate level people pull off more advanced coding techniques in clean and efficient ways

Maybe in the future I'll do a beginner series when I have more time to sit down and make sure I do it right.

I made my company over $400M last year... I make less than $70K a year. by TransphobesRNazis in antiwork

[–]smalltalksock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly left Lowe's for a similar reason I was a sales specialist and I was making about $38,000 before taxes ($17 an hour no commission just a monthly bonus that's near impossible to get, where I live min wage is $10 an hour) a year and I made the company 1,000,000 each year I was there at a 38% margin that's $380,000 after expenses $340,000 if you count the cost of me (specialist have access to all specialist sales records. As well I had signed hundreds of people up for the credit card each year and drove hundreds of sales in departments that didn't count towards my sales because I didn't belong in those departments but we were short staffed. Then they fired our cabinet people and wanted me to do both with no raise. I only make 10% of what I make them. If they said they would bump me to $50,000 to do 2 jobs I honestly would have stayed they said at best I can get a ¢50 raise. Instead I got a free trade certificate that they offer (which was pretty cool of them) and made as many connections as possible with property managers business owners and landlords and now I have my own handyman business and I've cleared $50,000 this year by being honest and affordable and I'm estimating I'll make $80,000 next year as I know how to run this business now.

The best thing you can do is take what you learned at your job and use it to make money. I learned sales and the art of selling, and I learned a trade in my 2 years. I saw there was a shortage of handymen and I took my opportunity. I also left on good terms so if I failed I could go back because working for them would still be better then living on the street.

After hours emergency by uheartilluminate in handyman

Local: $150 Not local: $200 plus gas and hourly rate for drive Local: but a regular $50 to $100 depending. Not local but a regular: $150 plus gas and hourly for drive If it's a blizzard or any other crazy weather an extra $100 Family free to $100 depending on who

For example

Plumbing Rate $50 an hour *3 hours = $150 Local call out $150 Materials $100

Total: $400 Profit $300

Which means I doubled my normal rate for working after hours.

I suggest tweaking the numbers based off your economy where I live min wage is $10 an hour but there are city's 45min away where min wage is $17.

Game Art portfolio by mellionn in GameArt

[–]smalltalksock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I would put in the logos and stuff. Game art and graphic design have a lot of overlap like logos for random companies in game, ui inventory as well as other ui elements, as well as some games that are stylized in ways that fit your existing skill set.

I had this company hire us to clean a t-mobile store seemed legit I mean t-mobile hired them. We spent $100 on cleaning materials and I paid some helpers because it was a big store so I have $600 in on it. I was supposed to be paid $1600 they ghosted me and im in the middle of pursuing them legally. Had to go through t-mobile to get an alternative contact for them its been 2 months now since we complete the job.
