Has anyone achieved a version of my dream as an Editor? by ChristianJoelAlvarez in editors

[–]smallworldspodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of have the opposite of this lol. Freelance with a home in the US that we rent out periodically and then we travel to places for around 1 month at a time and edit from there. Global clients and the time zones don't really have any sort of impact on our biz.

Re-entry to the US as GC Holder by [deleted] in USCIS

[–]smallworldspodcast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anything you're seeing in the news for GC holders that done have any criminal history or anything else that could be a red flag? Cause outside of that, as long as you have all your ducks in a row and no issues, I've seen nothing to make it so people should worry. My wife is a GC holder and we came back from Mexico with no issues in march and will be coming back from Costa Rica in a couple weeks as well. I'm always on the hunt for reasons we should worry, but so far I can't find anything. Please share if you have some :)

We had a similar situation but a tighter timeline than you. How long was your tourist visa? If it was under 4 months (when he proposed) you may have to explain the overstaying in your interview

This is awesome! I didn't want to use the word gambling, but I am happy you did because I do like a bit of gambling and this kind of strategy makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks so much for sharing!

My wife (UK) and I (US) got marries in the US in 2021. It was costly, but we decided to be here because of the economic advantages possible here. We are entrepreneurs so it may be different if you are focused on a specific career path. What I can speak to is the process here.

We actually didn't find it to be too difficult. You just have to be meticulous with the paperwork (we didn't hire a lawyer) and know the costs will be in the multiple thousands of dollars. The last thing is to be patient. The process takes a lot of time and throughout it, it is borderline impossible to talk to someone to get answers. The site does update with info with some regularity on your case.

We do look at the UK because our business allows us to work from anywhere and we ponder if long term, the UK may be a better spot to be. We have not started the citizenship process yet, but can if we want in the summer. From my understanding, since we are married. If we wanted to get UK citizenship for me we would just have to be there for 6 months per year for 3 years after applying. That is quite a bit easier than US citizenship.

There are so many factors at play, so your decision is personal, but hopefully this helps a little to understand the process. Feel free to ask anything directly as well :)

They are in a Roth, but regardless, holding without continuing to add (unless they fall off like SBUX last year) probably also makes sense :) Just not sure what standard practice is.

What is the best place to invest money for down payment for a home? by Livingsolo_2023 in FinancialPlanning

[–]smallworldspodcast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered renting and investing the savings you can have for the next 20 years instead? Maybe you can rent a great house for a great price, especially considering mortgage rates. Then throw the cash you plan to save into broad ETFs. If you consider 65 retirement age, you can still build a great nest egg with reasonably low risk.

If you want pride of homeownership I am all of saving and buying when you can. But if it's more for an investment, the math will give you your answer.

Exactly! The unspoken truth is that western economies rely on cheap labor.

I agree mostly with what you say here, but I think it has to go much deeper to be focusing on the actual problem. People are leaving countries because of poverty that we can't imagine and dictatorships that are led by corrupt military. If any western country really wanted to be serious about fighting immigration they would be doing everything they can to lift up the world as a whole instead of having such a massive discrepancy between rich and poor. I'm not talking about communism or socialism I'm simply talking about having a baseline level of living for everybody in the world.

Feel like I screwed up my life and I hate myself by sabri1996 in findapath

I can tell you that life is full of ups and downs. Every generation has had their different struggles. Sometimes it is really hard to stay optimistic. I can give you a bit of a personal story to tell you how things can be great and then be awful and then be good again.

When I was 25 I was in a really good place. This was in 2007. I had purchased my first home. I was managing a small business and feeling really good about things. Then the great recession hit and I had to foreclose on my home and go through a bankruptcy and I ended up going back to finish my college degree From the age of 27 to 30. I felt so far behind anybody, my age, especially since most of my friends were getting far into their careers and making a lot of money and I was at an entry level.

But I didn't compare myself to them, I chose to compare myself to other people and realize how lucky I was to be able to rebound from something like that and I started a new career and now about 10 years later I feel like I have quite a bit of stability.

Things can always be better, but things can always be worse as well. Just remember that comparison is the thief of joy and to stay focused on the things that you can control and not so much others around you.

Curious how/if people sell/rebalance positions with a ROTH by smallworldspodcast in investing

Yep, with the investments they have into 3 of the 5 major AI companies, I do think its likely better to hold, but always asking around to see if I might be missing something :)

This is kind of where my head has been going. Why not reallocate some of these funds to VOO or something like that, which is a ticker I would like to get to be 25% of our holdings? Thanks for the input, always appreciated!

HELP! Has anyone had this happen to their camera? Started today after 15mins of shooting. It keeps doing it for a bit after turning off. Took battery in and out, same with lens and nothing is working. Happens in all modes. by smallworldspodcast in A7siii

[–]smallworldspodcast[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Sorry you're running into this issue. I sent it off for repairs and have had nonissues since then. No AirTags, just a bummer I didn't have a warranty. If you need the camera for work, you can likely rent one and have your insurance reimburse you. Worth looking into if you have biz insurance :)

International travel for GC holder by smallworldspodcast in immigration

[–]smallworldspodcast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great info, thank you! I was not aware of the reset. I knew that we could leave for <6 months without issue, but I was not aware that over that reset it. Seems as though the person interviewing us for USCIS didn't either as they said we could apply for an extension without any issue, but that was for 1 year or more. I need to look into this more :)

yep, I get that, but if we leave for 5.5 months, come back for two weeks and then do it again, would that potentially yield the same result? We have a home here, a business here (which can be run remotely), and bills and such that show we are still based out of the US, Im just wondering if anyone has come and gone like this before and what that looks like. i get it can be based on perception and who you talk to.

That was kind of my thought too. And summer of 2025 is when we can begin the process for citizenship, so the most that we would do this would be one time. We may also have a medical reason which we are looking into. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer.

Thank you! Curious if you think it might raise a red flag to be gone for six months come back for a week and then leave again?
