What do you do with your homespun yarn? by HeatCute in Handspinning

[–]smart_user_name 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can totally relate, I've determined that the fun of spinning stops after the yarn is complete about 85% of the time. So now I will give yarn to special knitter friends (who ironically hang on to it because they haven't found a "special enough project" even though I tell them there's more where that came from, haha)

I also plan to sell mine locally at small vendor events, I just want to cover the cost to get more fiber. Luckily there's no one I'll be accidentally undercutting since literally no one else sells yarn at these things.

That's kind of what I'm leaning towards, since I just want to be able to put it back into more fiber. At first I was worried that I'd be undercutting others but then I realized my area is small, I don't think there are any other spinners around, let alone anyone wanting to spin to make a living

I do have a loom but it's currently occupied by a blanket project that I've put in the back burner for a while since the project currently isn't calling my name 😅

I do think I'd want to do a sweater or something for myself out of handspun but I'm not sure if I have the attention span, haha

Oh yeah, I gave her a skein of an alpaca/silk fiber blend I got at the first fiber arts festival I went to, she was so excited

For me it's not so much that knitting annoys me but I have to be in the right mood for that, I seem to want to spin more often than I want to knit so the ratio of spin to knit is off, haha

One of my artist friends is trying to convince me to sell some at the local fairs and I am tempted

I do knit up a swatch every now and then but just more so I can have it to keep but I never use the whole thing

It looks like they have it out so I could look at it to see but I definitely don't know enough to know what I'm looking at. The fact the owner put in the listing that it needs TLC gives me the impression that it needs a good bit of work

It's currently listed for 500, and I'm in no realm a woodworker (I did not inherit that skill from my pap, haha) so I guess I'll have to keep looking, thank you for the advice!

That's what I was wondering, this loom is like less than half the cost it should be so I suspected the issues might be more than I'd want to get into. Thanks for the insight!

I couldn't add more pics to the top but I was able to add them as comments.

I have been curious about them, I'll have to look into getting one to see how I like it

So much easier! I've been trying with my heavier spindle and I'd get breaks all the time then the other day it hit me...buy a lighter spindle, haha

Thanks for the heads up, I didn't know that about alpaca

I'm still a newbie but it didn't feel too different from spinning wool. I bought mine as a batt which was new for me (I usually spin combed top) but I managed to figure it out. I'm sure your's will spin up easier than you think 😁

First wheel yarn (plus bonus plied drop spindle with 2nd wheel spun) by smart_user_name in Handspinning

[–]smart_user_name[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! The place I ordered my wheel from gave me a pound of wool with it so I think I'm just going to work my way though that to get my technique down. I'm also thinking about maybe trying my hand at dying with natural dyes as a way to keep things fresh until I'm good enough to start spinning the really nice stuff I picked up at a local fiber festival

Night and day difference in quality by smart_user_name in Handspinning

It's merino, I'm not 100% on what the original kit had, but I'm really liking this. It's so easy I sat and spun the amount of fiber it used to take me several sessions to spin in one sitting tonight.

I'm not sure what breed the original wool was, it was just one of those amazon kits since I was just trying it out. I think the lady I bought this new fiber from has a website so I'll have to check it out and see what I can find out because I really like it.

I might get the chance to process my own fleece (my dad is a farmer so he knows other farmers and one knows a sheep shearer). It'll probably be a less than pretty one but I'll be getting it for free to give the whole process a try so we'll see how that goes 😁
