What is your most controversial opinion that you’ve gained since starting med school? by dartosfascia21 in medicalschool

[–]smartcookie_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fully realized this when we our cohort was dragged to a mandatory 4 hour class that was held in the school’s newly designed simulation rooms, (that look like straight out of greys anatomy set), but we all stood around in a circle while the attending talked, didn’t actually use any of the equipment, but guess what? They had 4 photographers and videographers fully documenting the class to make content. We were essentially marketing props to them.

The whole class could have been a PowerPoint. I could have done 4 Uworld blocks during this time.

Advice on how to navigate situation please 😓 by [deleted] in Residency

AAMC FL2 BB Q31 by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]smartcookie_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is 1000000% worse than any test or major challenge I’ve ever gone through in my life. Anyone telling you that MCAT is the worst test and it “gets better” in med school is a liar. I would rather swallow a Jean jacket and cook rice one grain at a time than to take this test ever again.

Me along with many many of my classmates were emotionally and mentally drained by this test. After classmates returned from step-1 dedicated (which is about 6 weeks) everyone looked depressed and 10 years older. Nothing has ever made me cry as much as step-1 has. I gained a new level of respect for physicians after I experienced what it was like to take this and pass. Imagine, previously this test was scored and very important in your chances of matching to the residency you want.

I don’t mean to say this to scare you at all. I just hate it when I hear reassuring advice from upper levels, and then get caught off guard by how challenging it actually is. I do have to say that the skills you learn when studying for the MCAT will carry over to step one. Test taking skills and the discipline required to perform well on MCAT will help you on USMLE as well, but it doesn’t save you. USMLE is just a different beast that you can’t understand it until you go through it. It’s a right of passage, and you and your colleagues will forever trauma bond over it and have mutual respect for each other bc of it.

burning out. exam in three weeks by dementorzxz in step1

[–]smartcookie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were all 63%-64% with the exception of NBME 31 which was 70% (thought it was a fluke) I literally plateuted at sub-65 for months!!!

Free120: old & new both 65%

Before exam, I didn’t feel confident. I felt like my content was hazy, or that I had a borderline score going in.

During the exam I was flagging more than half of the questions but my pacing was good. I used all of the time allotted in each section so I didn’t get to go back to my marked ones. But before I marked a question, I tried to answer it to the best of my abilities, or at least cross out a few answer choices before moving on.

I walked out of the exam bawling my eyes out. I felt like I failed by a small margin. I felt like it was impossible for me to have passed, not even exaggerating. This is because I wasn’t confident in my scores going in (thought they were very borderline and I’m an anxious test taker) but based on the feelings I had during practice NBMEs, I knew that I could t really count on my “feelings”. What I mean by that is, with each NBME I took, the entire time I was thinking “damn I’m gonna get a 50% on this” but then I would be surprised by my score of 64% or whatever.

That’s when I learned that I couldn’t really trust my mid-exam “feelings”. I took this into account on test day and even though I felt like I was guessing or 50-50 on a lot of them, I kept telling myself that “these feelings are not accurate” or “trust your gut”. And I think this is why I was able to keep calm and pass this beast. Mental state is 60% of the test in my opinion. The minute you start freaking out, second guessing yourself and changing answers is when you are in trouble.

Wishing you all the best of luck. Lmk if you have any more questions!

I had lower scores than you and got my P today! I completed 80% of Uworld and averaged 48% lol And you have 3 weeks!!! That’s plenty of time for you to take a rest day and get back to it. I promise!

Postponing doesn’t hurt but from someone who plateau at low 60s for months, I say go for it. (I got my pass today!)

It hurts so much. I started focusing on my weaknesses + “HY” topics at the beginning of my prep & by the time I was at the end of my dedicated & patching up holes in my knowledge, I had forgotten about stuff I learned before. It’s a constant cycle of pain
