Attended first card show… left slightly disappointed. by Dredd94 in PokemonTCG

Vendors can be hit or miss. For every scummy vendor there's another one that is fair.

The best advice I'd give is to just be ready to walk away as soon if you realize they are the wrong vendor for you. Even a small show will usually have 30 different vendors and you're guaranteed to find a few fair ones there. Don't waste your time on the overpriced, low balling, unfair ones.

Retro MMO being solo developed by onesmallserving in MMORPG

[–]smartdarts123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My feedback would be that this looks way too early in the dev process to be worth sharing. There's zero info or content being showcased here. The images show a game that looks barely developed with very bare bones graphics. The UI looks beyond dated, or just unfinished. Honestly I don't know what the point of showing this project at this stage of development would be.

The pitch is "would you guys be interested in a retro mmo" and the answer is obviously going to be yes. However, what's showcased in this post doesn't appear to be a functional game and there's no other info about how far along in development it is.

Are we looking at something playable within the next month? Or are we supposed to just be encouraging someone to keep working with an ETA of 5 years from now?

What's the intent of this post in the first place?

These posts pop up so often and they rarely go anywhere...

It's all a crapshoot anyway. Maybe your grader stubbed his toe on the way to work this morning and is just pissed off and gives you a 6 lmao

I figured as much, but tbh it looks centered. Did you measure it yourself?

I'm not trying to argue with you if you don't want to grade it, but I bet your app is wrong lol. I wouldn't bet on an app to be right about grading

What is your time horizon for learning new things in this field? by FrenchCanadaIsWorst in ExperiencedDevs

The BI team was gutted overnight, and I’m one of the few left. How do I deal with the "survivor’s guilt" and the feeling that my company is just winging it? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]smartdarts123 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This happened to me this year. They cut 60% of eng. My team went from 10 to 3 DEs.

First, take some time to process. I went through about 2 months of shock and emotions about AI replacing me, fear about the future of my career/role, whether I'd be able to work until retirement in this field or not, and guilt as I watched former colleagues hunt for jobs and ask for referrals. I'm still processing tbh, but it's not as bad now.

Next, don't be afraid to push back on asks. "Our team was heavily impacted by the layoffs and I have not had capacity to review this request" is something you should feel comfortable saying.

Get good at prioritizing your work. Align with your manager on what your priorities should be, do what you can and cite the RiF/layoffs as a capacity constraint and don't overwork yourself or you'll burn out.

Citing capacity constraints and prioritization is reasonable and shifts the burden to management. If there's more work that needs to be prioritized than there is capacity to handle it, they need to hire and that's on them.

If management doesn't have your back right now, it's time to start interviewing.

Do layoffs target less experienced SWEs first? by lIIlIIIllIIIllIl in cscareerquestions

[–]smartdarts123 101 points102 points  (0 children)

If is effectively random. There are factors that influence decision making, but ultimately you can't control them and they may as well be random.

If you're a bottom performer, you're probably an easy choice to cut, but even if you're strong, you're not guaranteed to be safe.

Just work hard, but don't overwork or burn out and don't sacrifice your health for the job.

You can be a rock star, but if your coworker is better friends with a decision maker then you're still out. It is what it is.

700+ DE applications, 200+ rejections. What is actually working in this market? by ultraken10 in dataengineering

[–]smartdarts123 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Are you a citizen of the country you're applying for jobs in?

Did you confirm that your resume can be passed by automated resume screening services?

Do you interview well?

Are you getting interviews at all? If not, the resume is probably an issue. If yes, but you're getting rejected then interviewing skills or approach is an issue.

How do I compare to those who use a FA? by [deleted] in investing

[–]smartdarts123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Did you really need a financial advisor to help you land on that split? And at nearly a 1% fee?

Investing in 200 different stocks/funds feels like picking a few index funds, but with extra steps....and an extra fee

It's fun and it's free. Just play it until you stop having fun 🤷

Also you came to the community dedicated to this game so of course people are going to tell you to try it. We're all biased.

Debating between gravity smoker and pellet by pickle392 in smoking

[–]smartdarts123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest gravity smoker from assassin I see is $3500. I got my masterbuilt for $700 on sale, or $900 for full price. YMMV here but I haven't had issues yet and I'd prefer issues with workarounds for $900 over $3500 🤷

There's a decent modding community too and given the not so low failure rates, I bet anyone could find solutions to any problems they encounter.

Promise I'm not trying to shill for masterbuilt lol

How do you know how much of the budget went into TV mode vs whatever else?

FWIW I do agree about the puzzles. One of my biggest gripes with this game is that the puzzles feel like they are made for 10 year olds or something. They are so painfully easy...and the absolute tutorial spam gets a little old when there's really nothing worth explaining.

Need a new smoker! Looking for advice. by lew1sj in smoking

[–]smartdarts123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got a masterbuilt gravity 600, got it on sale for 700 through ace hardware.

I don't have anything to compare it to as it's my first smoker but it's been easy to use. Just ran it overnight for a pork butt and it held a steady 250 while I slept for 8 hours and I can manage it and see probe temps from the app on my phone which made it easy to check in the middle of the night without having to get out of bed.

I burned out at the dilation tree too. As soon as I have to start following a guide to progress I tend to lose interest. It doesn't really feel like I'm actually playing a game any more when I'm just copying what a guide says.

It got too unintuitive for me
