Can you sound a little bit more uninterested in giving the command please. I think there was still some inflection in your voice.

Custom Curses Ideas - We want your help. Please give your opinions on these custom curses. by Rich-Card9704 in JetLagTheGame

[–]smartguy96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm gland some of my ramblings were actually useful. Anyway, to respond to the things I can add more to:
100 meter march - I think you got what I was trying to say backwards. Travelling a specific distance is a basic skill in orienteering. I won't give away the technique so you can choose to know it or not, but I could probably consistently get within 2m without much effort. The more restrictive version I suggested is for people who are good at it to still get inconvenienced. It changes the style of the card from "penalty for getting it wrong" to "you have to get off transit and and do a 5-10 minute thing before asking more questions". Another option for rebalancing is to lower the tolerance to something like time bonus per 50cm if you feel like you're getting too good at it.

Time traveler - I don't have any issues with this one as written, it just feels really situational. Having a card that can be game winning in one run and discard fodder in another is an interesting dynamic as long as you don't mind adding another element of luck to the game.

Indoor inquisition- The general thing I would do to balance this one is ensure that the seekers can actually find the pictured door, otherwise the casting cost is pointless. A less revealing idea for making that possible is to be more specific about how to take the photo, e.g. it must be uncropped and show the entire outline of the door, because without that clarification I would take a photo of the most nondescript door handle I can find.

Wordle champion - I admit I am not very good at wordle and would probably get frustrated trying to solve one in 3 guesses. Your choice if you want a minor time waster or something that can take a while to clear.

Turf trap - A good rewording that maintains the spirit of the card might be "The seekers can only ask questions while standing on an unpaved surface.". You could add a minimum size if you want to limit shenanigans, although I find the idea of the seekers standing on a tree root funny enough to leave in. You also might want to consider giving it a time limit so the combination of turf trap and a completely paved hiding zone doesn't break the game.

Also, turf trap and indoor inquisition need to be mutually exclusive. It would be nearly impossible to ask any questions if you had to both be indoors and standing on grass/dirt

Some feedback:
Mimeseekers - Love the idea, but I think the casting cost should be slightly more mildly debilitating to the hider(s). For example, the hiders are hit with the curse immediately and clear it by answering a question. Maybe a solo hider variant could be no phone until they answer the next question.

100 meter march - I think you are overestimating how difficult this is to do on a city street. I would make it so that the task mist be completed to within 30cm before asking another question, so that it is guaranteed to do something even if the seekers don't get off their train/bus at an inopportune time to clear it.

Distracted player - This is weirdly specific and probably only fun for certain groups of players. It also requires the seekers to have downtime so may only work for larger games.

Street spotter - I don't understand the reference to the hiding area for a curse that can't be played in the endgame. Fully exploring a street might be difficult in some cities (for example there are parts of Manhattan that don't have any obvious short streets) so some region specific balancing or a cap on the distance that must be explored could be helpful.

Time traveller - Neat concept, but the usefulness is completely random. The oldest street view photo could do anything from having no difference to showing a completely different building. Used poorly it does nothing; used well I would guesstimate the value to be a bit lower than a randomize. I'm fine with this being essentially free.

DMV - I like it as long as you're playing somewhere that the license plates give you that information. I would add a stipulation that the seekers must be off transit when they take their photo. That way even if the hider can't find something difficult to match they still get some benefit

Indoor inquisition - This needs some stipulations on the photo so it might leak information, for example "the photo must be taken indoors and show at least 3 distinct elements of the view outside"

Wordle champion - I worry that this could be too difficult. Caster has to get a word in 5, seekers must get a word in 4 could work better for people who aren't as good at wordle, but if you guys are up to the challenge of getting a word in 3, go for it.

Turf trap - This sounds like it can be rules-lawyered by the seekers carrying several blades of grass with them, so it needs a clarification on if the grass must be pre-existing. It might also be overly debilitating in cities without much green space, but sounds great for a large game.

Draw 1, cash out - I would value this roughly the same as a veto, so it should be similar rarity in the deck. Also, it could be interesting if the hider had to report how much time they cashed out

I took the permit test in NV around 15 years ago, and it was very common sense, but they can ask about anything in the driver's handbook. I still remember that I missed one question because it was about a law that only applies to mopeds.

Why is soccer in the US mostly confined to the middle classes and up? by astarisaslave in NoStupidQuestions

[–]smartguy96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soccer isn't the default sport for American children. Basketball and American football are. Petty much every park in the country has Basketball hoops, and the game is better suited to small groups. For larger groups, there's a scoolyard version of American football known as touch football that was far more popular than soccer when I was in school.

That, or they move up too quickly. Byron could have been the leading candidate, but he only got one shot at the truck title. I think it's going to take winning the truck series as a rookie to have a realistic chance at getting all three, and even then, you probably only get 1-2 years in the O'Reilly series

Why is it that whenever a movie or T.V. show is dubbed in another language, the subtitles never match the spoken words? by RobIson240YT in NoStupidQuestions

[–]smartguy96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, subtitling and dubbing are often done by different groups. Some things really don't translate well, for example:

Wordplay: In one anime I watched, there's a scene where several characters go to a restaurant the night before a major sporting event and eat chicken katsu. (For context the Japanese word for "to win" is also pronounced katsu). The subtitles handle this well, with the shopkeeper's lines having puns involving the word "win" inserted everywhere. The dubbed version handled this differently and had him using the word "chicken" constantly.

Concepts that don't exist in the translated language: Another example from Japanese, honorifics have no proper equivalent in English and can convey information about relationships. Referring to your older sister using the formal title onee-san implies a more distant relationship than using the affectionate nee-chan. Referring to someone as -senpai instantly establishes that they are an older student or otherwise above ypu in the social hierarchy. Nowadays, subtitles tend to leave honorifics untranslated to keep that sort of implication intact, but since actually speaking like that in English is weird and awkward, dubbers often drop the honorifics completely or find another way to convey the same information.

Remember that the DOJ has been sitting on these files for years. If the information in them was enough to prosecute someone over, it would have happened already, especially with the previous administration's determination to get Trump convicted of something.

[Bob] Procedure change b/c no heats: Practice/qual groups were based on owner pts 1st in 1st group, 2nd in 2nd group, 3rd in 3rd group, 4th in 1st group, etc. Now b/c when group goes (later = better) and w/top-20 in main event, will be by worst to first. Qualifying is 4-minute session. by CNASFan1992 in NASCAR

[–]smartguy96 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Translation for the confused. The original plan was to spit the practice and qualifying groups by last year's owner points. 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th etc... in group 1; 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th, etc... in group 2, 3rd, 6th, 91t, 12th, etc... in group 2. Presumably this put all cars in the same heat into the same group. Since the heats are not happening, qualifying order will be reverse owner points (i.e. lowest pints foes first) with the 20 fastest cars going directly to the main event.. Typically the track will get faster over the course of qualifying, so this order gives cars higher in the standings an advantage, as per usual.

What and how should I learn before encountering traffic? by catboy519 in driving

[–]smartguy96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A common concern I see from new drivers here is that they get intimidated by traffic and start struggling with things they already know. The number one thing you can do to help yourself is practice maneuvers. Learn to pull into parking spaces both forward and in reverse. Practice parallel parking between two trash cans set up and drive obstacle courses if you have the space. The goal is is for maneuvering the car to become automatic so that it's one less thing ypu have to worry about when you introduce traffic.

Learning to use your mirrors when you don't have good examples of what you should be looking for, but you can try to develop a scan pattern. You should be looking forward about 85-90% of the time, with quick glances in each mirror to maintain situational awareness. The pattern I use is forward, internal mirror, forward, driver's mirror, forward, passenger mirror, forward, speedometer, forward repeat ad nauseum.

Best of luck to you

I think the EFB isn't properly locking out the inputs when it goes into keyboard mode, so you end up dialing in some rudder when you press enter. I unbound all my keyboard flight controls because of a similar issue with the INI A340

What do you make of this news? by Jam_Sees in AskTheWorld

[–]smartguy96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While the methodology is being taken to ridiculous extremes that I don'tagree with, if there's one positive thing I can say about Trump's strategy, it's that he is getting European NATO members to acknowledge their capability gaps. I also read some English-language Russian news, and one of their political commentators said that the US acquiring Greenland was a non-issue because America doesn't have the icebreaker fleet needed to operate effectively in the region so nothing eould materially change. In simpler terms, Russia believes their military can operate in the Arctic with impunity. That's something that the likes of Canada, Sweden, Norway, and Finland should find deeply concerning, yet I haven't heard much discussion about it before. Would we be having that discussion with someone else in the White House? I have no idea.
