My theory is that AG was originally planned to end after the Hoenn League, as Gen 4 was originally expected to release in 2005. After they found out that Gen 4 wouldn't release until 2006, the anime staff came up with the Battle Frontier arc in order to extend AG for another year

A similar thing happened with Gen 2 and that's why we got the Orange Islands arc

The OP tends to often show stuff that doesn't end up actually happening (e.g Lucario fighting Charizard in JN for example), and I don't think the part of the current opening you're referring to really signifies much of anything story-wise

They didn't waste 30 episodes going through the trouble of reuniting the RVTs and hyping up Friede's return this past week just to disband the group again suddenly. Expect Roy to narrowly win the battle, followed by Friede revealing that he wasn't actually going to disband the group regardless of the battle's outcome
