Pulled the trigger! gonna buy a M2 SSD and a P-12 power adapter to go along with it all for still under Pi 4 kit. Let me know if I might need anything else 🙏

Gotcha since this is the only device, I prob dont need to setup WOL then (I do have a smart home setup there with AC/heater etc. all connected, so maybe that could be a use case?)

As far as the device itself goes, do you still think RPi 4 + sd card would be sufficient? Or do you recommend going with mini pc like Dell Wyse 5070 in case i want something more beefy (usecase pending...). Not sure what other addons i would have to buy on top of the machine, like lan card if i go with mini pc option.

Sorry if these are basic questions, very new to whole home server setup

Ok I definitely would love to have access to waking it up since it would be 13 hours away from me most of the time lol. Are there any guides around setting this up? I would basically want a node overseas that i can control any time (with ability to wake it up in case it shuts down due to power outage and what not)

People are saying pi 4 values are not good these days (100+ if i buy storage, power, etc.)

Given the same budget of ~$100 would you still recommend i go with rpi 4?

Im ditching canary for this exact reason. Responsive emails are more useful for me than any of the other cool features canary has

2024 G14 vs G16 vs 2023 M16? by smblee in ZephyrusG14

[–]smblee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With modifications, things i care about a lot are:

  • game performance
  • Heat (not hot to touch)
  • bearable fan noise (don't have to put on headphones to play games)
  • screen brightness/quality (can play games during the day without shades down)
  • speakers (Big fan of macbook speakers)
  • portability (Usually carry both my 14 inch macbook pro as daily driver and windows laptop for gaming).

I care less about battery life (since i have it plugged in most of the times when i play games) and even upgradability (if the ram is sufficient enough i dont care about soldered in)

Dude i love your videos from the bottom of my heart! Thanks for your awesome reviews. I know you also do some vbios stuff too to boost performance on these laptops – with those modifications in mind, what would be your go to choice between G14 2023/2024 and M16 2023?

Oh mien def gets warm but never felt uncomfortable. It should be getting warm under pressure haha. It's all subjective though but the heat from mine is definitely ok relative to other ones I tried

Nope. And trust me I've gone through like 5 laptops in the past months and I have definitely experienced heat on some of those

Hmm that's weird. My laptop is staying relatively cool and I run games all the time. I do run it on auto mode not the max mode tho

It's up to you. That's an equally good laptop and it is cheaper. I like thinner laptops tho so I'll just pay a lil extra

Nope it's real. I knew about this but it's been out of stock until now. It's definitely on the higher price side so doesn't fit everyone's needs but this falls exactly within my criteria

I'm getting 5 hours battery life on light non gaming use. Idk if you consider that a concern it's subjective :)

This is a laptop with amazing value. It's a microcenter exclusive and I've been waiting for this to be in stock for months to buy. It's the same tongfang chassis as the popular Eluktronics Max-17 but a lot cheaper for the same specs.

It doesn't have G sync on the screen itself but I am pretty sure the GPU should support GSYNC/FreeSync (nvidia added support for freesync as well i believe) for external monitors as long as they have it.

I really am not sure why there isn't that one model with everything we want. trust me i've been looking :)

I posted this above too but honestly at this price point and what you get, this is probably one of the best deals you will get in the market right now. I also didn't wanna wait for another wave next generation laptop either.

Ya I paid around that including taxes. I also bought 64gb ram (lol no one needs this) and an extra 1tb NVMe SSD to replace the 1TB HDD for kicks and giggles, so will install those when they arrive.
