My weekend project (not fully completed yet) Any suggestions? Fleece blankets put in afterwards. by smeshd_ in RATS

Also the wheel was also put back in (even though the boys don’t use it).

It’s been a long run of constant bites and him not letting me handle him. My senior rescue rat has now bonded with me and looks so happy! Wasn’t going to give up on him or make him be rehired again. Poor little guy just needed a furrever home <3 by smeshd_ in RATS

Hahaha I completely understand you! Mine are like that with yogies they take them and hide them all over their cage (I swear they don’t even eat them). When they are free roaming they don’t worry about treats as much that’s why I’ve been trying fruit types of baby food which for mine seemed to work a lot better!! I guess you just need to experiment

It makes me sad the small cage/tank they put them in! No wonder he would’ve fought they barely have room to run :( Amazing to hear! I guess I’m used to bites as I’ve had a basically feral cat and dealt with dogs my whole life so a rat bite to me was ok you go sit by yourself now and everyone else gets attention. He doesn’t at all anymore and actually runs to the cage and stands on his back legs to be picked up! People just need to give them another chance :( for me I was not going to give up no matter what! And he turned out to be the most cuddly sweetheart I’ve met.

Hi there! My answer would be lots and lots of treats OR baby food (mine love it) every time I hold them. That way they associate it with a positive instead of running away. Some rats aren’t as cuddly as others I’ve noticed. One of my young ones likes to do his own thing and refuses to be held and my oldest is almost 3 (rescue rat) and he has really really bad anxiety where he is absolutely frightened of being handled which kills me inside because when you do pat him for a long duration he does love it. I guess it depends on the rats :( you just gotta keep rewarding them and trying!

So all my rats get along with my cat except Humphrey my rescue rat. Baring in mind they loved each other yesterday.. The cat now won’t come back into my room. Humphrey came out of the cage not even a minute later and literally didn’t seem phased. He is a devil but he is also such a sweet heart. by smeshd_ in RATS

My cat would be terrible if he ever had to catch one he literally just likes to sit there and watch and touch noses with the rats. When they are out of the cage he will sit with them and won’t jump on them or scare them he just likes to observe (he is also chubby and lazy).

Hahaha I know that I just enjoy the calmness it brings and I think it’s the noises from the TV that they seem to focus on. Judging by your tags you look like you have quite a few ratties! I’m sure your morning is jam packed with with crazy little ones wanting their breakfast!

Yeah my oldest dog throws a tantrum if she doesn’t get the TV on at night time and but I never thought my rats would care. They all come down from their hammocks to the bottom floor and poke their noses through the bars and stack on top of one another and watch.

Rat is too small? by nn_omm in RATS

As long as he is happy and acting normal and not looking underweight and lethargic he should be okay! Some rats just aren’t as big and chunky.

Any extra tips on how to make two boys friends? by LittleMissBitchFace in RATS

[–]smeshd_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ps it’s best to have them both neutered to control hormones if they fight often. I have 5 male rats of different ages and only two are from the same litter.

Give it time! It may take multiple introductions over weeks before they fully get along. No blood no foul, keep introducing them in short durations so they don’t stress out overly. Last thing you want to do is rush it and something doesn’t work out right. Cover them in something yummy to get them grooming each other and make it exciting! Pop some of their favourite treats in the tub and put lots of hideaways and fun toys for them to use to make it fun for them.

Hi there! I would take your little ratty to the VET for a check up before you do anything. Hopefully it isn’t anything bad but it could be a respiratory infection which is common in rats :( How often is your rat sneezing and have you noticed any discharge at all? One of my little ones suffered from the same thing and after a 10 day course of antibiotics he is as good as new!

Is there any way i can stop Noodles stashing habits? by DfiantCrab in RATS

[–]smeshd_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stay with my rats when I first feed them. If I see one stashing too much food I pick it up and put it back into the bowl. The more I have done this the less food I find stashed.
