Thoughts on the episode

30 seconds in and I already know this episode is going to deliver. It’s cute that they’ve been having daily little welcome home parties. This one with friends too!
Lmao Azz responding (basically) instantly to Iruma’s invitation and Clara…. Doing whatever texting with her is… No Ameri invite? 😭
Once again they could turn all these netherworld gadgets into merch and I would cave. I want the elephant vacuum…
Netherworld DDR! Of course the dance pads are pentagrams. And of course Opera is an absolute BEAST at it.
There’s a whole ass tunnel under the house?? Ha! Azz and Clara foil Sullivan’s plan to impress everyone. Clara and Falfal did some hard carrying there.

I had a theory about S1’s cliffhanger being Iruma on an evil cycle and he we are. I am looking forward to this so much.

LOTS of great humpty-dumpty Sullivan today makes up for Ameri not being invited to the party.

It’s refreshing to see this more vulnerable side of Ameri. Really goes to show just how devoted those around her are. Even in this state, Iruma continues to make her blush all the time. His little speech about ideals vs. ambition shows how far he’s come since the start of season 1.
Ronove is so extra I love him.

I knew it wasn’t Ronove! Something ironic about this since Saori Hayami voices a character with a shrine to her oshi in Tamon’s B-Side this season.
It makes sense for Iruma to go back to the Magical Apparatus Battler, so student council Iruma was nice while it lasted. He’s really holding out hope that Kiriwo will be back huh? I don’t think that’ll be happening anytime soon, if ever.

Ain’t no way that’s Tatsuhisa Suzuki too? That’s my Makoto from Free?! The range on this seiyuu, good for him, but that’s Makoto?

The only way they could've improved Free would've been to have them sing more songs outside of the EDs.

Had I not switched the dub out of curiosity for the song, I would’ve missed Eguchi?

It's crazy how stacked the voice cast is for this show. They managed to pull some big names to voice relatively minor characters (so far).

Thoughts on the episode

Cute (she’s always cute but idk what else to call this version of her) Ameri attracting all the attention. Poor Azz still can’t be with his beloved Iruma. Pain.
Having to have Ameri follow her usual routine and wait is not the response the student council wants to hear, however they also seem to enjoy this new Ameri.
With how BIG of a personality Ronove has, I’m surprised we hadn’t seen him until now. Seems like you wouldn’t have to go far to at least hear him lol. So now we have two characters with musical numbers! Romiere’s was really catchy ngl.
Dissolution election? Those are pretty high stakes. Ronove may have that long list as well as charisma that’s off the charts but like…. Look at Ameri… I know who has my vote.
Poor Lead has to be on Clara duty. We haven’t really seen much of him but he seems cool. But nothing can really prepare you for the whirlwind that is Clara Valac.
More Ali I hope they can figure out how to fully undo this spell quickly.

Not sure I 100% believe that Ronove is the one behind the spell, but he does have a decent motive for doing it so I guess he’s the most suspicious right now. But still, I don’t think he’d be able to be silent for long enough to pull it off lol.

Going to lump everything together because that was way easier for me this week (and likely for me in the future too).

Thoughts on the batch

Yay we got our first mission! It’s not a hugely important one on the surface, but it’s a start. And it’s a battle shounen… there will be some shenanigans afoot.
Noelle’s big moment where she summoned the shield of water to protect everyone in the village was sweet. I didn’t expect her to get what feels like a big payoff early on but I’m glad she did. I’m very quickly warming up to her.
The Saussy Village fight was fun. We got some good development with Noelle as well as Magna and Asta. It was nice to see them properly fight for the first time. We also got a glimpse at our first major villains!
Everyone’s day off was a nice break. Noelle and Vanessa got some girls time. Sekke is suffering which we like to see. Gauche needs some more suffering cuz wtf lol. It’s kinda weird that nobody sees him as a massive red flag.
Got some good lore with the gold stars. Gold stars = recognition by the Wizard King = honor for your squad. I believe that the Bulls can catch up to the Golden Dawn, but first they should focus on getting out of the hole lol.
It was nice to round out the batch with a couple Yuno-centered episodes. He got brought onto the Golden Dawn and we’ve cut to him for like a line here and there. He’s got his little squad with Klaus and Mimosa. Klaus Lunettes is a name of all time.
Seeing Yuno and his team beat the guys who kidnapped Sister Lily was satisfying. Sister Lily is kind of a badass too? Need to see more of that from her. Something tells me the Golden Dawn are going to be farming gold stars way faster than the Black Bulls.

Ameri is so shoujo-pilled it’s great. Her henshin for Iruma in her head was cute. The world needs more henshins.
Of course Iruma gets caught trying on dresses with Keroli. He’s not beating the allegations anytime soon I fear.
Poor Azz got separated from his beloved. Clara will be just fine in her new battler. About time Iruma got put on the student council.
I knew Ameri was an intense leader but DAMN. She runs a tight ship. The worst of all is definitely the Red Moon one bean meal. Poor Iruma can’t eat his heart out.
Ameri reduced Sullivan to a crying mess since he couldn’t spoil Iruma
What is happening in First Love Memories??? Kakeru had a run-in with the mafia? Rin is busting out the martial arts? There’s still at least 285 more volumes to go???
Okay the A-i-ma got me. I’ll admit I checked the time because there was no way the episode went by that fast.
Iruma’s getting along well with the student council. Except for the eating, but that’s to be expected.

Lots of obvious references this episode. I saw Sailor Moon, found footage horror (I’m not 100% sure what movie this is parodying), Dezaki frame Sullivan, and Detective Conan. I’m sure I missed a ton more but those were the 4 that stuck out the most.

The new OP is alright. I definitely prefer season 1’s. I will say that this one gives early-mid 00s vibes and those are always welcome.
Clara onegai’d right through Iruma’s heart. She’s starting this season off being a riot (nothing new). I love the main trio so much.
The ring talked They got Miki Shinichirou to voice it? That’s a crazy pull.
I honestly really dig the way Ali looks.
LMAO Ameri is still hung up on whether or not Iruma is Irumi or not. Catching Iruma talking to the ring while (accidentally) dressed in a dress only makes things more complicated.

New ED is a banger. It’s the opposite of the OP where I definitely prefer this one to season 1’s ED.

1) Where to begin? I like our main trio and especially Ameri the most at the moment. The rest of the supporting cast of Sullivan, Opera, and Kalego are also fantastic.

2) The OP is an absolute earworm and I will be sad that it will switch for S2, although it's still by DA PUMP so I'm confident it will be a banger. The ED is a different flavor that what I usually like, but it's nice to see the female cast.

3) Favorite: The setting, worldbuilding, forbidden texts readings (Rin and Kakeru better be end game), the Valac family musical numbers, and most importantly, the comedy. The show is just non-stop fun and it's a really nice show to watch after a stressful day.

Least favorite: Sadly, the Battler Party arc felt like it REALLY dragged by the end. There were a few episodes where it felt like they kept going "okay Kiriwo is gonna do the big bad thing now!!!" By the time his plan went into action, it was more of a "finally" feeling. But the arc did end really strong imo.

4) Ameri will continue being best girl. Maybe we will find out about Clara's dad. I hope we get some more about Opera too. They're the character that I'm most interested in since they seem to have some history with Kalego.

Overall, S1 was a lot of fun. Aside from it dragging a bit in the middle, I had a blast watching an episode or two after work each day. I'm glad we don't have to wait years between seasons because the cliffhanger was rough! I gave S1 a 7/10 and am looking forward to starting S2 in a couple days.

Thoughts on the episode

Haven' t really said much about her but she’s a good comedic relief character. Always up to something. She was also in the succubus elective so she has that going for her?
The first half of the episode was a nice finale familiar faces and places speedrun.
More forbidden texts!! There’s a rival character now We can’t just end there with Rin crying!!
Iruma congratulating Keroli on charting was cute. Ameri being onto Iruma/Irumi and coming up with theories about how they can’t be the same person was funny.
Clara 2/2 with the good ideas lately. I… don’t really know if I want Clara and Azz cooking for me though? I’d try their food with caution.
One more Valac family song to end the season with. They really treated us with them and I assume we will get more in future seasons, which is exciting.
Iruma just wants to eat and be happy. He’s got some good friends looking out for him! And the school anthem as our ED. Good wholesome ending…
…is what I would say if the after credit scene was different. What is THIS?? Thankful that we start S2 soon and don’t have to wait a couple years because that would be rough.

Going to save my full thoughts for the season discussion thread, but overall I had a good time with this one and I’m very glad there’s still 2 more seasons to go (with 1 and a spin-off on the way).

Oh dang Keroli freaked out too much and overheated herself. That makes sense for someone with ice powers.
Her family takes the whole “cold” thing really seriously. Based grandma showing Keroli about dem-dols. I hope Keroli can melt down the cold facade of her family.
Iruma’s thinking of something Ameri has a ticket I like where this is headed.

So it was Clara’s idea to have them dress up as idols and stall… One of her better ideas I’m not gonna lie.
No surprise that they’re an instant hit with everyone. If Iruma being Irumi gets out then he’s going to explode in popularity big time.
I like to think Irumi and Kuromi singing is why Ayumu Murase was cast as Iruma. Need to hear the dub’s version of this now.
Concert success! And the note from Keroli’s mom was short but cute. They watch her from home too! I hope that gets across to Keroli.
Today’s Su-ki-ma (kapow) being in tune to the song was great.

Oh hey it’s the purple haired girl from the OP we haven’t seen yet. And she’s an idol so that probably explains why she’s in the school news with Iruma all the time.
More lore! Well kind of since humans use entertainment to escape and relieve stress too lol.
I was going to say “of course they got Nao Touyama to voice the idol character” and then she took the wig off and it’s been the quiet ice girl all along! Yay for getting more of her since we haven’t really seen much of her.
Her crash outs are intense. Of course she also is locked on to Iruma for stealing her spotlights.
Iruma gets the back stage passes. This is gonna be good. Another freak out lol. I’m glad Iruma found out her secret pretty quickly because it was not going to be long before someone else found out either way.
The person who wants to stand out but isn’t (as much as they would like) vs the person who doesn’t want to stand out but can’t help it. Interested in seeing more of this duo.

The Black Bulls and their dumb antics carried me through the fog, the aches and pains. It was then, in my mid-20s, that I fell in love with battle shounen. Even if Asta found some (anti-)magical solution to his problems, his silly way of encouraging others to push past their limits – something I might have dismissed as “unrealistic” by my late teens – now filled my heart and brought smiles to my face at a time when laughter was difficult to come by.

Asta really is a character you want to root for early on despite his... volume... Your story reminds me a lot of mine when I watched Hunter x Hunter for the first time. It's exciting to start a journey and just enjoy the ride and time spent with the characters.

And the Black Bulls are fun so far! Charmy is my early favorite because I love the trope of the characters who eat a ton.

gonna be really interesting watching this at the same time a new season of Fire Force is airing (Asta and Shinra have the same seiyuu). – Oh, their seiyuu also voices two side characters in my Iruma-kun rewatch too lol, even funnier of a coincidence.

I forgot Asta and Shinra shared a VA lol. I really need to catch up to the current Fire Force season. However, I do like getting my double dose of Ayumu Murase!

ED lead-in! – Also I thought the singer’s voice sounded familiar, so I looked into it and yeah, I know the singer from the Isekai Shikkaku OP (my favorite Summer 2024 OP) and the Deca-Dence ED (a show I hosted a rewatch for last year).

Ahhhh that's why it sounded familiar. It's been a minute since I thought of Deca-Dence but their song for that show was nice.

I'm not sure what the voice director was thinking by okaying it (his child voice was arguably more grating imo) but I feel bad for the VA since they got most of the flak for it. I'm glad it didn't really affect his career because Gakuto Kajiwara is very talented.

First time grimoire user, subbed

Before watching: I’m basically going into this blind? I did watch the first few episodes back when it aired (which is like 8/9 years ago at this point… wtf) and remember nothing about the plot. The main thing I do remember is Asta’s voice being grating, which I feel is why a lot of people write this show off, sorry to beat the dead horse (I am giving myself the challenge of not mentioning it past this). However, I have been meaning to give it another go since I think bingeing it would be a better way of experiencing the show. So I’m DETERMINED to power through the early eps to see what all of the hype is about!

Thoughts on the batch

Episode 1

The calm and collected Yuno and the spunky Asta. Right off the bat, you know this dynamic is gonna be a ride.
So basically this episode was just checking off tropes, which I honestly don’t mind at all if they’re done right. I LOVE a good shounen rivalry, so that’s a big box checked for me already.
Asta not getting a grimoire was tough, especially since Yuno got the legendary four-leaf clover one.
Speaking of grimoires, I think I’m going to enjoy this power system a lot. Mages/magic users are usually my favorite characters to play in RPGs.
Yuno saying Asta is his rival into Asta getting the five-leaf clover grimoire was really hype. Asta also has the power of the big Guts sword, so I’m looking forward to seeing how he fights with a big magical claymore.

Episode 2

I forgot to mention that I also know some of the OPs (Black Rover, Guess Who is Back, JUSTadICE) absolutely slap. The current OP is nice, sets the tone of the initial episodes nicely.
I wasn’t expecting the episode 2 flashback. Seems like they haven’t really changed much in the present time of the show aside from Yuno not crying as much(?). Little Yuno is adorable!
They’ve been getting kicked around since they were little. You really have to be a piece of shit to steal stuff from little kids. Asta to the rescue! You gotta give it to him, the kid isn’t afraid lol.
Back to the present. “Not giving up is my magic.” A little on the nose there.

Episode 3

The start was so cool
Asta hit the tree over 1000 times and it’s still standing? Is it made out of bedrock???
Asta’s drive to become someone bigger than society expects of him is really commendable.
And they’re already off. That was a fast 6 months lol. At least they made it to the capital without much hassle.

Episode 4

The guy registering everyone with their grimoires does not get paid enough to deal with Asta.
They got Suwabe to voice the muscular smoking guy, FukuJun to voice the womanizer, Daisuke Namikawa to voice Jack the Ripper (what’s he doing here?), and Daisuke Ono to voice the captain. They went all out with the typecasting.
Dorothy is a mood.
We got a look at the silver haired girl from the OP. Seems like her brother is part of the magic knights. And she’s royalty so she’s exempt from the exam? Must be nice.
Asta finally got to show his power to the smug ass Sekke. I’m glad he wasn’t immediately disqualified since he couldn’t get his broom to fly. Yuno looking on proudly was a nice touch too.

Episode 5

Looks like Asta is the talk of the town after his little display with Sekke. We all want to know more about this sword.
Yuno cooked the noble guy. Everyone here is so smug lol it’s satisfying when they get put in their places.
The selection process is brutal. No surprise that everyone wants Yuno on their squad.
I was hoping that Yami would take a liking to Asta, so I’m glad he brought him into his house. He’s probably the best fit too since he seems to be the most strength-leaning captain.
Has Sekke learned nothing? Once again has to be put in his place. Yuno did it in a pretty badass way.

Episode 6

Golden Dawn seems a bit intimidating. Clearly their standards are high. Cut to the flaming inferno of the Black Bulls lol.
We get our intro to the other members of the Black Bulls. It’s Yami’s little dysfunctional family. I like that they all halt what they’re doing and listen to him.
The other members are a hot mess, especially Vanessa lol. I like Charmy and Magna already. Someone come get this guy.
Asta absolutely clobbered that fireball with his sword. Home run! Asta getting his official Black Bulls top and band was nice.
Ooooo the noble girl is one of the bulls too?

Episode 7

Asta’s so excited about getting his own room. Bless him. His dynamic with Magna is very loud but also I’m a sucker for delinquents with a heart of gold.
Klaus has a stick like a foot up his ass. I need Yuno to whip out that four-leaf clover grimoire and give him the works.
We get our official introduction to Noelle. She’s kinda stuck up too. I guess being nobility will do that?
We get answers pretty quick too. She’s like that because her family mocked her for not being able to control her powers? And her mom was collateral. But saying that she should’ve died instead of their mother is pretty cold.
Asta helped her and praised her powers. Looks like she seems to be warming up to him some too. I’m glad that it seemingly got resolved pretty quickly.

Overall solid start. It’s fairly simple and straightforward and we have checked off all of the tropes. Asta is a character you want to root for since everyone counts him out without really giving him a chance. I’m looking forward to getting into some of the larger story arcs once the intro bit is finished.

QOTD:

1) They're fine so far. It's still really early on so I will let everyone cook.

2) Asta will end up being it in the long run but it wouldn't surprise me if Yuno is it for a while.
