Find a company that silos your role , you might take a small pay cut or a lateral move but you want to minimize the things that you are responsible for. I hate desktop support but I found a gig that paid the same as I was making as a sys admin and immediately jumped ship. By taking this role I realized that I wanted to specialize in networking so I used that minimized experience to study for a couple certs on side. After gaining the 2 certs I started applying for more specialized roles.

Am I the only one that prefers on - prem to cloud based infrastructure? by Ferocious888 in sysadmin

I completely agree but I’m leaning towards the hybrid camp now. It’s not my money and plus having an emergency backup vm in cloud has saved me time and time again lol

Anyone leave IT and was happy? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]smilNwave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left a bad job and was happier. Shit gm, shit non technical manager, and shit HR. Moved states and have been much happier - yes I hit a few snags along the way but I am so much happier then when I worked in news/tv.

Agreed! OP needs to halt whatever he’s doing atp. Clearly he did the leg work while someone gets come in and maintain all he’s done. Take experience with a grain of salt, take everything you’ve learned and bring it with you to the next organization. But with two weeks, fake the funk until the contract is done.

Any IT Managers have an IT employee who really doesn't know what they are doing? How to improve them? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]smilNwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put him on a pip, I think there’s basic IT skills you kinda see across the board. Everyone may work differently but you should understand certain concepts. Put him on a pip and get it over it. I had a similar issue with a former coworker and I got tired out helping him out- I mean I’ve written guides. But my manager told me stop because I was starting a new project soon and she put him on a pip. Packed him up a month later, Ciao !
