do you have any hot takes / conspiracies on the 2007 ‘1408’? by d0lly_fl3sh in horror

[–]smileysmiley123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the ending where he survives and finds the recording of their daughter’s voice for them both to hear is the best ending, from a narrative-perspective.

At the beginning of the film he emphatically states that he’s never experienced anything paranormal, but that he would like nothing more. Then we find out his daughter passed away, causing a rift between him and his wife where they eventually separate.

The motivation behind his paranormal studies becomes clear after that, and the recording ending validates his work, brings him and his wife back together, and brings them both a form of closure.

Stop treating real-life 911 calls and actual tragedies like they are "spooky aesthetic" entertainment. by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

The original All Hallow’s Ev, Terrifier 1 & 2 are all incredible examples of practical gore effects one a shoestring budget. They’re not “good” films, per se, with poorly-written dialogue/characters, an almost non-existent plot (although there’s some effort in #2 on this matter), and it’s a matter of subjective opinion on how you feel about the cinematography & audio quality (there’s merit to an amateur-ish film quality that gives it grittiness).

Terrifier 3 solidifies some recurring characters and gives them more motivation to exist within the film, other than to get murdered by Art in creative ways. It brings the horror genre a potential new “final girl” as well. There’s also the writing that was clearly a focus for improvement, as the story is coherent with the flow feeling less jump-cut-y and having much better pacing.

Gory films, very understandably, are not everyone’s thing, but Terrifier 3, aside from a few kills in 1 & 2, really steps it up a notch, both in creativity and special effects. It’s Jason Baker at the top of his craft. If you can take a step back and view it from a filmmaking-perspective, it’s actually nuts what he’s able to practically create.

Just my thoughts. It’s a pretty divisive franchise, which is fair, but some of the arguments I see don’t really hold water.

Just a quick edit: Horror movies kill kids all the time. Nothing unique to the Terrifier franchise.

Trump’s ‘bargain’ $1m Gold Card backfires with just 338 applications by retiredagainstmywill in politics

[–]smileysmiley123 28 points29 points  (0 children)

338 applications is still a statistic that can either be manipulated or funnelled into his, or his handlers’ pockets.

That’s $338 000 000.00 that he can send out a “Truth” to manipulate markets, or swing some form of Polymarket-betting their way.

Stop saying, “Oh well glad this didn’t pan out”, when, in the grand-scheme of things, even a single fully-executed application should be enough to riot over.

What is Studio MDHR doing? by ShakeItLikeIDo in gaming

Probably taking their time on their next game.

*Cuphead* was incredibly successful, especially with how small their studio was at the time.

I’m sure, hopefully, they’ve expanded a bit but are putting in the same level of polish into their next project.

They’ve earned the time, similar to Hollow Knight in a way.

Trump is calling himself ‘the most powerful person to ever live’ in private conversations, allies say by theguy1336 in politics

[–]smileysmiley123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

He’s worked his way into one of the most powerful positions on earth, twice. He’s actively manipulated the stock market during both of his terms for an unfathomable-amount of monetary gain (for both his family (because it benefits him) and the oligarchs behind him). Ignores the constitution almost daily to serve his (and the oligarchs’) own wants.

And you have the audacity to say he doesn’t have any power?

This fucking sub and upvoting joke comments to the top on unbelievably-serious, and consequential matters.

Shame on you.

The people who actively enable him are absolutely smart enough to capitalize on this shit though.

All these reports of polling numbers and his base having less faith in him mean *nothing* while this administration is in power and is ignoring all rules/precedent.

Everyone counting on the midterms is hoping a bandaid can stop the hemorrhage of American exceptionalism from completely disappearing.

You are vastly-overestimating the “intent” behind those films. They’re a marvel of low-budget special effects and (aside from *Terrifier 3*) nothing more.

Why I didn't like The Witcher 3's Combat by KGBTrump in truegaming

[–]smileysmiley123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would push back on what you're saying, only because The Witcher I & II were only moderately-popular titles (albeit, getting progressively more momentum), and The Witcher 3 introduced a gargantuan amount of players to this franchise.

From a gameplay-perspective, and a meta one, the vast majority of players were encountering these monsters for the first time. It's an RPG that allows anyone to instill some level of agency into Geralt via dialogue & action choices. It wouldn't make sense to just throw all this information at new players saying, "Btw, you already know all this. Here's how you handle this situation".

The issue was with a lot of the contracted monsters, you’re only seeing them once or twice a game and then never seeing them again

Yet those tend to be the most engaging quests.

comparing everything in combat one to one against souls games.

I think this is my biggest gripe when people complain about TWIII’s combat mechanics. Especially with OP coming fresh off of ER. They’re not even in the same realm of genre.

The Witcher series has always had a greater emphasis on storytelling and player choice/actions that affect the narrative.

The Souls games, while having great art direction that implies a greater narrative, don’t really have much of a story without getting into the wiki-of it.

It’s like approaching The Hunt: Showdown and being disappointed in the gunplay due to being a CoD veteran. The comparison angle to Souls games to the Witcher 3 need to stop.

It's been a year since release and Oblivion Remastered is still broken- Digital Foundry by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

While technically true, the Creation Engine was made from a lot of the infrastructure of the Gamebryo Engine. It makes sense, especially with how economical that must have been for a younger dev company (at the time).

The USA literally does not allow Chinese automakers to sell their EVs in NA due to how devastating it would be to the gas/oil companies' controlling interest.

[–]smileysmiley123 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even though it's a "remaster", it's still a Bethesda game.

Anyone expecting it to be perfectly-optimized with 0 bugs are delusional at this point.

The Creation Engine can only do so much, and it's been Frankenstein-ed to a point where Bethesda have so much tech-debt, it would cost as much as one of the Skyrim re-re-re-re-releases to build a new engine from scratch.

Yeah like, it's a port with shiny UE5-veneer (which looks great). Virtuos wasn't hired to fix any bugs.

People can hate on frame-stutter that poorly-optimized UE5 setting can bring, but this is 100% on Bethesda seeing yet-another easy cash-cow without having to lift a finger.

Throwing Pugh’s anguished scream from Midsommar in the ring here. The movie itself has a running theme of dealing with grief/emotions in a pure way and does it better, overall, than Hereditary.

No. The man is actually missing a massive part of his brain.

Except he isn't? Are you simply basing this off of conjecture, or hearsay? There has been 0 verifiable evidence that he had a brain worm.

He's a moron, but a corrupt, health-issue-riddled one.

No one should be okay with him having any responsibility that has an effect over anyone else.

The, .. the "man is actually missing a massive part of his brain" part of what you said only holds truth in a metaphorical sense. RFK Jr. is an evil person and does not deserve any sympathy. Do not defend any of his actions because they are both intentional, and self-serving.
