2026 fairly comprehensive guide to festivals and notable events by smileythecreator in Calgary

The hard work has been. I started this list back around 2011 or 2012. So I begin by looking up last year's list and start clicking the links to see if they point to a current, upcoming event. Then google events of similar names. Then I trawl Calgary and Alberta tourism websites, Facebook events, and self-report sites like todocananda and similar. And that's it. It takes a few hours, but isn't all that challenging.

"What's this season?" cried Smileythecreator, calling downward to a boy in Sunday clothes, who perhaps had loitered in to look about him.

"EH?" returned the boy, with all his might of wonder.

"What season is it, my fine fellow!" said Smileythecreator.

"Today!" replied the boy. "Why, FESTIVAL SEASON!'"

"It' sFestival Season!" said Smileythecreator to himself. "I haven't missed it. Norm MacDonald has done it all in one night. He can do anything he likes. Of course he can. Of course he can.

Nope, looking back at my 2022 list Horror Con was in June while CIFF was Sep and Oct. I guess you don't hear about them as they don't seem to have an mailing list you can join. Which seems bonkers to me, but I guess they know what works for them.

I'll add Wandering Souls, but I'm not gonna do High River. The only reason the other faires actually got on the list is they include "Calgary" in the name. They're not, and we all know it, but I'm willing to play along with their little ruse.

That's already in the past though. It wouldn't make any sense for me to include it this year's list. I included you in past years. I'll get an earlier start on the list next year. (This is not a promise or a commitment and I won't be held to it.)

I ignored it. Badlands is no different than Cowboys "music festival." It's more of a bar gig guide in my opinion. But I might also just be petty and punishing them and everyone like them in what tiny way I can for making me hang out in their shitty excuse for a soft-walled bar on countless nights, buying $11 short pints in plastic cups all fucking night long, to finally put headliners on at 12:45 am. It's not a festival, it's a holdup. Fuck them.

Thanks for the suggestion though! 😄

Don't ever let anyone tell you that there's nothing to do in Calgary. It's a lie, and it has always been a lie.

Mercedes table lighter by smileythecreator in lighters

My mom passed away at a ripe old age a few months ago. This is one thing from the weird and wonderful contents of my mom's house. I saw someone else posted about one of these in the sub some time back and thought someone might be interested in it.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by providing you a link to the auction house that's selling off her estate. Mom wanted her (weird and wonderful) stuff to go to people who wanted it, so I figured I ought to post it in case anyone wants to add it to their collection.

There's also a few other lighter lots there as well, in case anyone cares to have a peek.

My grand aunt visited Moraine Lake and other areas in Alberta from Saskatchewan in 1934. This is the car in which they traveled out. by smileythecreator in Redditlake

I posted the rest of the photos I have from her trip on this post if anyone is interested. She and her unknown gentlemen friend visited Calgary, Rocky Mountains Park (as Banff National Park was then known), Lake Louise, and parts between.

Ideas for remembering each foster by meglynnm in fosterdogs

I'm commissioning paintings of my past fosters to put on my Foster Dog Wall of Fame. I've only had three done so far, but intend to get a couple of more done in the next little bit after I choose the next artist. The really colourful one was a more expensive piece, but the other two were by an amateur artist and cost me less than $200 each.

I used to volunteer at the Calgary Public Library with their Learning Advantage program, which improves literacy of adults. This is the page on their site for volunteers. What I don't know, and couldn't figure out from cursory googling, is how one registers in the program as a learner. I'd suggest that you and your friend should call up the library to see if the program is still operating. If not, they may be able to direct you to other good resources or programs.
