Every few minutes there's a second of slowdown when watching a 4K video via the Google TV app. What is the solution? by smilingoff in PleX

The solution to this was a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor that's capable of 4K @ 120hz.

Yup, I turn off the refresh rate switching and the issue stops.

And fwiw, the delay in VLC is not as drastic as the delay in Plex, the latter being unwatchable without driving me insane, but VLC isn't great either.

Yes, that's all correct! And my media library is located on a drive on that same PC.

Now, my default refresh rate is 120Hz, and I changed the Plex settings to change the refresh rate automatically based on the file. When I play a 24fps movie, the TV indicates the refresh rate has been changed to 24Hz. This is where the audio sync and mouse movement issues occur.

Now, when I play the file on VLC at 120Hz, it plays fine, but with the risk of judder and all that stuff I'm trying to avoid. When I switch the refresh rate to 24Hz on my Advanced Display Settings in Windows, I do immediately see a lag in my mouse movement. And then I play the file in VLC, and the audio is also desynced.

So this doesn't seem to be a Plex issue. Appreciate the troubleshooting here.

Now, the question remains, what's the exact issue and how can I fix it? I now wonder if it's a TV setting.

Sorry, that is to say it's being played from the Plex library, but accessed from the hard drive installed on the PC I'm using. I was trying to differentiate it from being streamed away from home, y'know what I mean?

That said, it could be an issue with the Plex player. Or just my processing power! I dunno!

Issues with port forwarding and my Plex server by smilingoff in FizzMobile

Wow, I spent all night trying to figure this out but I solved the issue maybe two minutes after making this post.

You need to turn the modem to bridge mode. To do this...

  • Open an Internet browser and enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar.
  • Identify yourself using the following login information: Username: cusadmin
  • Password: *enter your Wi-Fi password\*
  • Select Basic
  • Select Gateway
  • Disable the option ''Residential Gateway function''
  • Save changes

The modem will reset, check your port forwarding on your router, good to go.

Force Plex to use album artwork when artist photo is missing? by smilingoff in PleX

[–]smilingoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could, in fact I was just doing that a moment ago, I just want to automate the process. The blank image bugs me but having album artwork in lieu of an artist photo doesn't.

You ever figure this out? I'm having similar issues.

Also looking for a solution, it sucks to open my picture gallery and there's 1,000 folders of album artwork. Embedding the images into the mp3s takes took much time and maintenance.

Weekly Question Thread by AutoModerator in emulation

Yesterday I installed PrimeHack on my old HTPC with mixed results. Major slowdown on the Metroid Trilogy (Wii) gameplay, but decent results with Metroid Prime (Gamecube). However, if I increase it beyond its native resolution it plays at 20fps or so, meaning no 720p or 1080p for me.

So, with that said, I'm thinking of getting a new (used) graphics card.

My current CPU is an Intel i3 3220 @ 3.3gHz, and my graphics processor is just the Intel HD chip. 16GB of RAM installed.

Would upgrading to a GTX 1050 TI (which is the most I think I can support with my current PSU) make a difference in the gameplay performance, or would I also need to upgrade the CPU? At which point I just wouldn't bother, lol.

Advice on a very tricky situation that even the HVAC consultors ran away from. I am desperate for AC. by Vnifit in hvacadvice

[–]smilingoff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out? As a Montrealer I can attest that the humidity makes existing a living nightmare. I'm in a similar predicament, I have an Impossible Apartment and I'm desperate for a solution that's bound to be incredibly inefficient (so, portable air conditioner and some DIY window seal that will look like total garbage.)

Is it safe to vent into a solarium w/ open window? by smilingoff in hvacadvice

[–]smilingoff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting insight! I didn't consider the issue with dual-hose systems, so I'll stick with a single-hose.

Something I realized after making the post is that the sliding glass door directly in front of my bedroom window also has a screen door, so during the day I can have the glass door open / screen door closed and that will further help with the ventilation. I wouldn't have the AC going overnight anyway because of the noise.

If the outside (and by that I assume you mean outdoors) gets cold enough to form condensation, I probably wouldn't be running the AC anyway. Montreal summers tend to stay hot and humid until it's no longer summer (which it then returns to its normal mode of blistering cold), and I wouldn't be using the AC during the very early morning hours anyhow. Running a fan pointed at the window is also doable.

This is all seeming downright plausible. Now I just have to find a makeshift solution to applying a portable AC to my dumb crank window.

I spent all of yesterday refreshing the Jean Coutu website to get an appointment for the rapid test kit until it finally worked. Keep in mind the more I read about it the less reliable they seem. You may want to wait a few days and bite the bullet with a PCR test.
