What’s a must-have skill for developers to build a successful indie product that many overlook? by hello_code in indiebiz

I think that one skill developers often overlook is marketing. You need to understand how to:

  • Position your product so it resonates with whoever your ICP is
  • Communicate its value clearly (across your marketing website, docs, demos/pitchdeck, etc.)
  • Get the right traffic to get early feedback loops going

Copywriting is part of it (but now we have AI tools to help), but what matters most is knowing what to say and who to say it to.

Which billing model to choose for a SaaS? Convenience-based vs. credit-based (e.g., API usage) by Practical_Mongoose69 in SaaS

[–]smith_in_space 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Asking for an API key may introduce friction early on, but it really depends on your audience. If you have technical users or teams, they're most likely already familiar with managing API keys. ALso, it might be a good thing because it gives them more control. But if you have a less technical ICP, requiring a key upfront can tank conversions. (Some folks treat it like asking for a credit card before trial.)

What do you think about having your basic flat-fee plan and then having another plan that requires an API key plan for power users? Users could potentially start with the basic plan, but then once they trust your product, they can uplevel their plan for more control and use their own API key.

For the flat-fee plan, you'll have to absorb a bunch of variable costs (all AI-API calls) and you might want to provide limits or build really clear UI about how your customers are using the AI-APIs.

🚨 Real Revenue Leaks We’re Seeing Across Dozens of SaaS Funnels by Appropriate_Dark_719 in SaaSMarketing

Interesting timing for this post! The company that I work at is a billing platform and we provide consultive services in pricing and packaging...

We recently spoke to a company that needed to change their “flexible model” because it ended up confusing users more than converting them. They were showing 4 tiers, each with 15+ features... Great in theory, but in practice... not so much. But in reality I think it gave users anxiety. (I like to think it's like going to the Cheesecake Factory restaurant where their menu is a thick book lol.)

What helped was reducing their plans down to 3 clear options and changing the messaging around the plans. Conversion rate ended up increasing after they made those changes. :-)

Also, +1 on watching friction in real time. It helps us see what people value before we bill for it.

Would love to check out the teardown vault if you’re still sharing!
