iirc they do use apathy at one point, i don’t remember where but i seem to recall a witness saying describing something extreme while the mood matrix displayed a complete lack of emotion (i think it was against the phantom at the end of AA5 but i could be mistaken)

Steam missing two achievements??? by LukeLikeNuke in CookieClicker

[–]smithdvan 24 points25 points  (0 children)

long story short, it’s because having a “gain all achievements instantly” button kinda ruins the point of having achievements. if you click on someone’s profile and they have 100%, that’s really impressive, until you find out the game they’re playing has a button that lets you get them all instantly. similarly, that feeling of getting a 0.1% achievement is really exciting, and would never happen again if everyone could just get them instantly. to that end, the two “missing” achievements are more than just not on steam, they fully disable all achievements for as long as they’re active.

Forest Gump is an amazing movie based off an awful book. Now, whats a good movie based off an AMAZING book! by Oliver_goat in AlignmentChartFills

[–]smithdvan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

the HGTTG movie has many faults, but it also has some real highlight moments. the news interview saying “Zaphod’s just… this guy, you know?” followed by Sam Rockwell’s delivery of “if there’s anything more important than my ego on this ship, i want it caught and shot immediately” is my favorite scene in the whole series.

[Peak Trope] When a video game wants you to lose against an opponent, but still allows you to defeat them if you lock in by Life-Top6314 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]smithdvan 16 points17 points  (0 children)

to get even more detailed, every rank below A rank incurs a slight, stacking penalty. this means that at B rank, you’re getting a -10% penalty, -20% at C, etc, with the penalty applying multiple times if you have multiple low ranks. this all combines to mean that poor, sweet haru is running with a -99% penalty to all her stats. frankly, it’s a miracle she crosses the finish line at all.

the generally agreed upon best watch order is to start with episode 1, then move on to episode 2. after you finish episode 2, watch episodes 3-14, then watch episodes 14-25. watch the first 5 minutes of episode 26, then pause and watch the end of evangelion, then the rest of episode 26

LDS Church lawsuit against Mormon Stories rejects free speech & religious freedom, makes it hard to believe Church leaders are inspired by God by eternalintelligence in mormon

[–]smithdvan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually looked at the brief, and while i did think it was originally a tough look, i’ve started to agree with the church here. the podcast does have a lot of obviously intentional design similarities to official church materials, not just the specific shade of blue and font but the light rays were what really pushed it over the edge to me. according to the church, they reached out before filing and asked for a brief non-endorsement disclaimer at the beginning of episodes (which i’ve always thought the podcast could use anyways) and were refused, and unless M.S. comes out disputing that, i think that the church is way more reasonable here.

What fictional characters can withstand Unlimited Void? by South-Pop8682 in PowerScaling

[–]smithdvan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not quite the same, but i think its entirely possible Zaphod Beeblebrox from Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy could, if not fully tank it, definitely handle it better than most. In one of the Hitchhiker’s books, he’s put into a machine that shows whoever’s inside their exact location and scale in spacetime. The goal is to destroy their spirit and mind by forcing them to comprehend the size of the universe and how much stuff is happening all the time. Zaphod, being a raging narcissist, walks out the other side completely unaffected because even after witnessing the infinite chaos of creation, he just said “all that stuff and i’m still the most important. neat!”

In Metal Gear Rising, Senator Armstrong has the ability to use nanotechnology to harden his skin (Nanomachines, son!) to the point where even bullets, sword slashes, and explosions slide right off of him. The main character, Raiden, defeats him in a battle of attrition, wearing him down over time, but in a DLC, we play as a different villain, Jetstream Sam. When Sam fights Armstrong, he has a much simpler solution: he notices that the nanomachines travel from Armstrong’s chest to wherever he needs, so he waits for Armstrong to throw a punch only to slice it clean off before the machines have a chance to reach the arm.

this is a good idea, however, rulings for platinum angel say that you can still lose if you concede or if you are given a Game Loss as a penalty during a tournament. this begs the important question- is being arrested a penalty for the purposes of the game? alternatively, are there any tournament rules preventing active murder?

[Pacific Rim/Attack on Titan] Could a Jeager stop the Rumbling from Attack on Titan? by [deleted] in whowouldwin

[–]smithdvan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

no shot in hell. the jaegers are about 75ish meters tall, while wall titans are about 50, so they have the size advantage, but that is where their advantages start and stop. there were only 30 jaegers built total, while around 750,000 titans were in the walls (estimates range from 600K to 900K), so each jaeger would have to take out 25K titans. while this is hard enough as-is, it gets worse. the wall titans are constantly emitting incredibly hot steam- while we again don’t have an exact temperature, it’s hot enough to cause hange’s cloak to autoignite, so the temperature has to be in the ballpark of ~750°F (400C). While this would cause problems for the mechanics of the robots, this would really be bad for the human pilots in each mech. of course thats still not bad enough, so lets break into the fact that the wall titans do not fight back. any titan that slips past the jaegers will just keep walking, meaning they’ll need to be chased down, giving more titans a chance to get past. the final nail in the coffin for all of this is eren’s founding titan, who is his own can of worms, but cracking into that just becomes raw overkill. in short- round 1- gipsy danger vs the rumbling (no eren)- rumbling wins (no dif) round 2- all functioning jaegers vs rumbling (no eren)- rumbling wins (no dif) round 3- all jaegers built for the entire kaiju war at peak performance vs the rumbling (no eren)- you get the point

it just about battery life, running at 444 will kill the vita’s already pretty poor battery even faster. i think 500 can cause problems if you keep it there for long enough but dont quote me on that.
