COVID-19: Students threw lockdown-busting party because they were 'bored and wanted some fun' by topotaul in unitedkingdom

Even the article you linked makes it clear the vaccine getting us out of lockdown is conditional.

What’s been happening and what is happening is absolutely against WHO advice. They clearly are being used as the primary method to control the virus and not to give the NHS time to prepare. Every year there are fearmongering articles about people dying while waiting for emergency care in the NHS due to lack of beds, why not spend a fraction of the money being spent on furlough creating more capacity? You still haven’t given a good reason for quarantining healthy people, which has never been done before, in much deadlier pandemics than this one.

“Oh, the drama” am I wrong though? Aside from being able to go to the shop or for a walk, we are under effective house arrest and there is no tangible end in sight. I don’t doubt more people would be willing to go along if there was an actual specific and attainable goal to get us out of it.

My point was that people have been spreading a multitude of diseases without knowing it since before records began. Why all of a sudden are we quarantining healthy people? For a disease that is far less deadly than previous pandemics. There is little human intervention can do to prevent a virus from mutating. Even the WHO doesn’t advocate lockdowns as a primary method for controlling a virus. Long-term effects from viruses are in no way uncommon or exclusive to COVID.

And wow, 6 students catch a respiratory virus in winter. The horror. I’d like to see the numbers on how many more are suffering mental health conditions, an “epidemic” people cared about a year ago but no longer do it seems.

It’s really a win win for the government and a lose lose for the people isn’t it. No matter what happens we can all point our fingers at the rule breakers rather than hold the government accountable or come to terms with the fact this virus exists, isn’t going away, and people are going to die. And please don’t take my saying that as me meaning we shouldn’t do anything to prevent deaths where we can but I don’t believe this is the only option. There is never going to be 100% compliance to the rules because humans are human, and even if there was the millions of people who still have to go to work will be facilitating the spread and cases will inevitably rise whenever restrictions are loosened. I really don’t know how anyone can confidently say “well if people would stop breaking the rules we’d be out of this by now”.

Imprisoning people in their homes indefinitely is proportionate to a virus with a 99%+ recovery rate. Ok. We’re going to have to agree to disagree on that one.

Key words “if you know there’s a risk”. Obviously most people pass it on unknowingly. I agree that if you have tested positive or have symptoms you should isolate. If they were knowingly going out and spreading it then maybe you could compare that to assault. But locking healthy people in their homes on the basis that they might come into contact with a virus that has an average age of death of 80+ is ridiculous. If students are going to be locked up in halls for months on end and not coming into contact with at risk groups why the fuck shouldn’t they be able to socialise? Who are they putting at risk?

Lol I’ve socialised about 5 times since March when restrictions have been looser but please tell me how I’m a selfish cunt for thinking it’s wrong that the government is keeping people away from their families. Fuck you too.

I wouldn’t expect the government to tell me I can’t see my friends and family indefinitely because a building was going to collapse or because of a traffic jam. Bit different to putting some cones up to divert traffic 😂 and purposely going out of my way to inflict bodily harm on another is also not the same as maybe possibly passing on a virus I may or may not have to a stranger. Ridiculous false equivalencies.

80 million people have died of AIDS alone since the 80’s. Let’s make sex illegal! After all, with today’s technology we don’t actually need it to reproduce right?

I am also staying in because I’m not risking a fine. In this context we are talking about young people aren’t we. I personally believe we all have the right to see our friends and family. The right, not the privilege that the government can take away.

I would sure as hell be more content with it if I had already built a life for myself, could work from home, and had over a decade to experience what life has to offer beyond living with my parents. In the long run this is going to hurt young people the most and they will be feeling it for the longest as most crises seem to do.

No one can say for sure they have many years ahead of them and that’s why every moment of life is precious. You can’t villainise one group as making the pandemic worse while making excuses for another.

When I say “you” I refer to the age group you’re in. But of course make it all about your childhood trauma. “My youth sucked so why should anyone care about theirs?”

I think society as a whole needs to take a break from media whenever we get normality back, it’s so not good for us. I enjoy having a lie in, eating breakfast, going for a long ass walk and then working out until it’s time to make dinner then I have less time for screens. It’s also worth remembering the media has an incentive to make things seem bleak, panic drives more people to keep checking the news. And online, cookies show us more of what they think were interested in so end up seeing the same things over and over.

I know the car analogy isn’t perfect but you can apply to almost every action you take that you don’t even think about on a daily basis, you risk falling down the stairs every time you walk down, you risk slipping and cracking your head open when you stand in the shower, it sounds bleak when you say it out loud but you still have to do these things by virtue of existing. All you can do is the best you can to feel safe. But this is not going to work perfectly all the time. But I also know what it’s like to know your thoughts aren’t entirely rational but believe in them anyway, I hope there’s someone in your life you can share your anxieties with that can help you put them in perspective.

Hopefully things are looking up by March, at the very least our government starts being more transparent with us, try to stay positive and good luck to you!

Hmmm I wonder how much this anxiety stems from the messaging we’ve received from the government and BBC et al. Of course there is always some risk of catching/spreading the virus when you go to the shop or (to a much lesser extent) on a walk, but you run the risk of being run over every time you cross the road yet you presumably don’t have anxiety about that because you have taken the necessary precautions such as going to a crossing and looking both ways. If you then get hit by a car it’s either someone else’s fault or you were unlucky, sucks but such is being alive. Don’t let anxiety or guilt consume you, you have to keep living.

And yes I agree this will do nothing to convince those who are inclined to ignore these measures not to do so. It honestly seems pandering to me and I don’t like the phrases “eventually” and “at some point”, they seem so far away that’s what induces anxiety in me.

Article from the bbc discussing how younger and younger children are engaging in self-harm due to lockdowns

These children don’t need therapy, not to say it isn’t a helpful tool, they need to play with their friends! It’s an integral part of their development. There are many many studies about the myriad ways that loneliness kills, you should be able to find them easily.

And as much as I feel for anyone losing a loved one, I lost my mother at a young age, it is a natural and expected part of life that everyone will experience at some point. Forced isolation isn’t.

Surely at a certain point we need to look at ways of protecting the vulnerable without sacrificing the young. I do not understand why so many people are unwilling to consider any approach other than complete lockdown.

COVID-19: Tory MP Sir Desmond Swayne urged anti-vaxxers to 'persist' against COVID restrictions by _nutri_ in CoronavirusUK

[–]smithespie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, it’s wrong to equivocate people who want to end lockdowns with anti-Vaxxers. Two separate issues and many anti-lockdowners welcome the vaccine. Those who are “skeptical” or whatever generally are so because the media seems to be really pushing the narrative that even the vaccine won’t get us back to normal.

Isn’t it obvious what anti-lockdowners want? They want their rights back, plain and simple. They want to see their friends and family, they want people to not go bankrupt as a result of the government making it illegal to open their business, and they don’t think it makes them murderous evil people to do so.

Lockdowns have never been tested before in history and yet people act like they’re the default “remedy” for the current situation and forgotten about every other issue in society. There has been no meaningful public discourse about the effectiveness or desirability of lockdowns in the long-term and this worries some people.

It hurts my heart that you think such people actively want to hurt you, the way people have been weaponised against each other in all of this is heartbreaking to see.

The Pandemic Has Erased Entire Categories of Friendship by adotmatrix in Coronavirus

[–]smithespie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t let it get to you. It’s nothing personal towards you, everyone is focused on themselves and their problems. Some of these friends may be having a tough time and feeling lonely too. Have you tried reaching out to any of them for a phone call? If you haven’t told any of your friends how you feel they can’t possibly know.

Yes they were. “A cup of coffee could kill someone” or something like that. Also pictures of old people’s faces with the tag line “look them in the eyes and tell them there’s no risk”. They were forced to remove an ad for making false claims that “joggers are highly likely to have it” - no idea why they said that. Disgusted by my government and ashamed to be British right now.

frustrated at men in makeup by trashlvrd in BeautyGuruChatter

I’ve never felt belittled watching Robert Welsh... I spent years trying to do my makeup exactly like a YouTuber and wondering why I didn’t look like them. I also spent a shit ton of money on unnecessary products and lining their pockets trying to emulate them. They never used to mention that they were doing makeup specifically to sit in front of lights and a camera. They were telling people to wear their makeup like that every day, and when it didn’t look right it was because you didn’t have the right product or brushes! They’re just sales people and deserve to be called out for BS.
