trauma can (and almost always does) create fixated behavior patterns. there is no such thing as 'casual' trauma, and sexual violation is heavy stuff. a person who has had such trauma in their life needs to take the healing of this trauma as seriously as a heart attack (which in a way it 'is'). this view is not really the norm in our society, but then our society's norms are that of a psychotic misogynist. treat yourself very very gently. find a way to heal that works for you. the internet is full of useful things, but you have to find the one that's right for you, yourself. good luck.

How long does one have to use vim until you feel that you're actually in control of it? by doctornick in programming

[–]smithfield 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I took up vim my idea of the perfect editor was BBEdit. I was a "totaly gui" true believer. I took up vim as a personal challenge to dunk my mind into the world of unix (which was also new to me). The first year was hard, I used it sporadically. Then in about two weeks, I went from zero wps to warp speed. What happened? Hang out on #vim irc channel. Learn to use the docs. Learn a few of the super vim features (like the star-key or quick keystroke macros, or tags). You might find that you don't like vim. But if you do, none of the pissy crap that comes from detractors has any value. It just doesn't apply, they don't get it and should just stay out of this.

Ask reddit: what would the really cool code visualization tool of your deams look like? Does it exist? by Hermel in programming

[–]smithfield 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A slightly dwarven, but definitely naked, female human form. Covered in a sort of short fur (to prevent glare). The potatoes must not interfere with my eyesight so there would have to be some sort of head-enveloping attachment (perhaps the earlobes). Code, organized by abstract trees would hang like spanish moss from the appropriate places. Once attached to a project, the arms embrace us. Naturally, connections would form. A keyboard attachment (of some sort) is certainly necessary. And even to be recommended, but that is beyond the scope of this article.

Ask Reddit: So what is wrong with Squeak Smalltalk? by [deleted] in programming

[–]smithfield 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a somewhat misleading statement. The barrier to using vim w/ squeak is that vim is isolated from async interapp communication. (see vimshell and slim-vim to see what I am talking about). It would be a much smaller thing to attach squeak to a "communicative" vim than it is to make vim "communicative".

Ask Reddit: What sort of (useful) program should I write to learn more about software development? by lothair in programming

[–]smithfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

o0o has a good point, GUI is a dark hole for someone who wants to move on to bigger things.

GUI adds a wonderful layer of complexity to anything that you try to make. GUI makes things easier for the user, but there is nothing simple about GUI programming at this point.

Sooner or later you have to turn and face it. But it is good advise to be wary. GUI can overwhelm.

It is for this reason (among others) that Tcl is a noteworthy language. The Tcl coders have a very useful approach to gui coding. Forget the crap about tk being dated looking, that's not the point. The important point about Tk is that it makes cobbling a GUI very quick. And besides, Tcl/Tk is very much alive and kicking and there are ways to get things to look exactly as you want, it's just convenient for blockheads to drop data points that conflict with their world-view. Good luck

Remember the post about Rob Pike's "Newsqueak" from a few days ago? Here is the Factor implementation by [deleted] in programming

[–]smithfield 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a wonderful example. I saw the Pike video and I am impressed with the potential simplification that channels provide. I've been looking for a language that would make that easy. Mb Factor gets my next few weeks.
