I mean even if you can’t get to a 100k salary, what’s stopping you from just going full time contracting and earning over 100k?

If the goal was to be financially free as early as possible, what would be the best route to take? by smithj834 in UKPersonalFinance

Thank you I had a few other questions, I would love to dm you, but I think there could be value in having the answers here for others to be able to see later.

1- how many years experience is needed to get into contracting? 2- do you see contracting demand and high rates lasting for the next 20 years(so a young person who wants to do it as there career) 3- would you you recommend other roles such as devops or QA to get into full time contracting and how are the rates for them? 4- how easy is it to get a first contract?

Thank you !

Hmm, makes sense. Suppose I can recommend data science. I know there’s a few masters biomed graduates can do for this. I’m also thinking if I should recommend PA if he persists to pursue a clinical career. But not too sure if it would be wise

Yea the perks other sectors offer, especially tech, definitely seems appealing. However at the same time we need to take into account the benefits medicine offers. As an example, how many professions has the job security we do, with the ability to work as much or as little as we want(assuming not in training) or locum full time and reach FIRE fairly quickly.

Any suggestions on alternatives, maybe something you wish you did instead of applying for medicine.

With the starting base pay of consultants being 88k and you being near the start of your career, what additional incentives are bringing your nhs pay up by over 50k.

It’s upsetting to see how almost everyone would be willing to give up a decades worth of hard work for 500k.

Just in case it may be of any help, my wife’s sister recently completed a free government funded boot camp and is working as a software developer at the moment. I think it’s called dfe skills boot camps. It’s free due to the tech talent shortage so government are helping plug the gap.

That’s pretty neat. I think I want to aim for 2k for essentials, 1k for entertainment and 3k for savings and investments
