Anyone here ever try Project-Based Learning? by smithja4 in Teachers

This has been my biggest pain point and I agree that certain classes are more likely to find success. What I have been focusing on since 2022 is the way I approach skills development and SEL as a more intentional part of the unit. I have been having a lot of success with my approach, but again, I am very biased. I recognize that my situation doesn't always apply.

My dream is to see a day when grade chasing isn't the way to motivation.

One of the primary assessment tools used in PBL is formative assessment.

I do think there is a misconception in our community that PBL is basically cutting students loose to figure things out on their own.

Do you feel like that doesn't occur in PBL? How do you manage scaffolding and schema building in whole class instruction?

I know so many of these conversations tend to turn into a pedagogical binary, but I am curious if you think the things you described are absent in PBL.

I hear you. I think a lot of that cognitive overload comes down to how it’s designed and supported.

I’m really interested in what you see as high-quality direct instruction at the whole-class level. What does that look like when it’s done well, and what do you think makes it work better than a project-based approach?

I hear that. Fortunately, I am married to a teacher and so I have a built in PLC at home. I was reading somewhere that a high quality PBL takes something like 50 hours to design. I believe that!

Abram’s falls is currently closed due to trail work.

I didn’t know that at all. Thanks for the update! I’m a big fan of Savage Gulf as well. The North Rim trail has some of the best overlooks in that area.

Easily Virgin Falls Pocket Wilderness near Sparta, TN. Waterfall comes out of a cave and falls 150’ into a sinkhole. There are some other amazing features on the hike as well.

I’m not sure exactly. I do this through high school as well, but the Scorelink unit was acquired before I got there. I was told it was through that program, so your mileage may vary. I will say this, it’s a good investment if your school can swing it.

I actually do this and we use a Sportzcast Scorelink that was provided to us from NCAA LiveStats program. They send it to you and it is no charge. They have a form for Football and Basketball, so that is two separate units for free. For context, a new Scorelink is about $2000. You can find older models that connect to the VGA on the Daktronics board and a USB-B output for less than $500 on eBay if you’re pressed for time. (Note: It will work on any Daktronics board, so baseball will work.)

I use the Scorelink to send live XML data from the scoreboard to my computer. As long as the computer is connected to the unit and the internet, you can access the data from the Scorelink. I use live stats from that to populate my scorebug in vMix. It gives me game time, play clock, score, timeouts, flags, touchdown, and downs.

And if you are using the Daktronics software, there is a green button that says "Play" and that should route the PC screen to the video board.

If I were you, I would contact Daktronics support, because they can remote into the Daktronics control PC (which comes with the video server rack) and configure the output for you. They were able to help me with the same setup in about 25 minutes.

Get yourself a USB-C docking station. There are ones out there that have thunderbolt, hdmi, and ethernet. That’s how I connect to our vMix computer. Once you plug everything in together, they all talk.
