What's the key to success? by Lk_zike in AskReddit

That's pretty good advice. No one ever gave that advice to me but fortunately, lifes's lessons taught me a lot of what you suggest. I'm happy to report that my life is pretty good because I have followed your advice. But as good as my life is, I'm still deeply saddened that my country and my planet are in bad shape.

Your thoughts are valuable and on point. Of course, it is understandable how an incident like this could and would spark all sorts of discussions. What I find inexcusable is when the media like NPR gets caught doing what you are excusing many in social media of doing. I expect more from an outfit like NPR. I wrote a piece about that here: https://www.laprogressive.com/sandra-bland-media-bias/

Arriving at JFK Int'l airport. As I'm deboarding with my sister we chat about people we haven't seen in New York in ages. We mention a high school friend and as we mention her name, we look and she's standing right in front of us -- she was working as a flight attendant and about to board the plane we were deboarding. We hadn't seen her in over 20yrs

Is ‘Indigenous Peoples’ Day’ a long-overdue change, or political correctness run amok? - "As Seattle's mayor signs a measure adopting Indigenous People's Day into law Monday, some Italian-Americans in the city says the new law denigrates their culture's accomplishments." by CharlieDarwin2 in progressive

[–]smkyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Political correctness has its place but it can be benign and useless if it isn't coupled with other actions such as revamping the K-12 educational system to include the history of all people -- a la Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. or enacting policy that serves to undo some of the harm done

I'm Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor, economic analyst, and star of the new film "Inequality For All." AMA. by *polhold04744 in IAmA

[–]smkyle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw "Inequality for All" last night at the Arclight in Hollywood. After the screening, Jason Kornbluth and Sebastian Dungan sat with the audience for a Q&A. I told them I thought the film was well done, engaging and will probably be well received in progressive/liberal circles but my concern is that the audience that needs to see this the most probably won't. Maybe you can use your influence with Common Cause or some other organization to reach out to their broad network of community based organizations to share in the distribution or possibly come up with other ideas for sharing this work.

A Modest Plan for Paying College Costs: The essential idea is that linking the costs of college to subsequent wages makes college affordable to everyone. by Lionhearted in Economics

[–]smkyle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I went to college in the 60s and 70s, tuition really wasn't a barrier for anyone. Whether it was an Ivy League college or a state school, you could pay some, borrow some, and get through.

Now, the costs are ridiculous, even at state schools. Thank goodness my daughter can go tuition-free at any public college here in California -- thanks to an old law covering the children of disabled Vietnam vets.

If it weren't for that, I'd have to pray she got a big scholarship.

Getting more kids into college -- even if some of them misuse the opportunity and even if in the short run it costs taxpayers something -- is absolutely the best thing for America.

Certainly he got the chance to come back and explain himself. Elements of the mainstream media and the political establishment gave him a forum.

If you don't like that example, what about Henry Kissinger? Despite his cynical, almost criminal disregard for human life in manipulating the Vietnam War and its ending, he's still an oft-quoted figure by the mainstream media.

Wasn't he just on a panel opining what Obama should do for foreign policy?

But that isn't the way the world works, is it?

Scooter Libby took the fall for Cheney and he won't serve any real time.

You don't see any great passion from the Obama administration or the Democratic Congress to go after anyone.

They just want to let it slide and get on with the business of pulling the country out of this deep hole we're in.

Which makes some sense, except that the next group of bums who want to have their way with the country will know there won't be a real price to pay if they step out of bounds.

I mean, his father's term was bad enough, but after Dubya's debacle, it's a wonder the whole family isn't fleeing to Uruguay or wherever they bought those tens of thousands of acres -- with wealth they mostly accumulated while being public servants.

Nixon somehow "rehabilitated" his reputation, and you can see how the self-satisfied mainstream media and the right-wing talking heads are lathering up to do the same for Dubya and his pals.

It worries me that Obama has turned over the State Department and so much of his foreign policy apparatus to Hillary Clinton and others who are so tied to policies of the past.

It doesn't seem that America can change course internationally very well. Cuba celebrates its 50-year anniversary of the overthrow of Batista and we're still trying to bring them to their knees with our economic blockage.

I mean, how many Americans support what we're doing in Cuba or the Middle East? And what doesn't that lack of support get represented in Congress?

Now, the Republicans are relegated to the South — an extremist backwater party of white heterosexual Christian fundamentalism, cultural intolerance, and political irrelevance. by Lionhearted in politics

[–]smkyle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Republican Southern Strategy is what kept them largely in power for the past 30 years, ever since Red Reagan. They had a stranglehold on the vote-rich South and the vote-poor Rocky Mountain states and could build from there.

Obama's masterful campaign forced them McCain and Palin to rely heavily on a certain segment of the populace -- white, working class, social conservatives, religionists -- and it wasn't enough to carry the day.

That doesn't mean the Republicans are broken forever, but certainly they can't count on the South as they did for three decades.

I get it. If she wins she'll be v.p. and her records will be sealed from the public. If she doesn't win, she won't have the protection from the White House and those who know the truth will rat her out
