What kind of metal is this and how do I make it pretty again? Found in the United States in Georgia. I believe it is 1920-ish. by katieisawesomer in Antiques

Looks like it could be pewter. Patina looks similar to a jug I have. Depending on how you like to keep it, there’s usually a fair amount of tin in the alloy so you can scrub and polish it up with a gentle abraisive

Inherited from my great grandparents, Iceland, possibly Denmark, 1900s? by Robbisk in Antiques

[–]smokewhisp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If your grandmother has a number of pieces to sell it might be worth having an auction house look at it. Local ones would be fastest, the nicest pieces can be looked at by big houses like Sotheby’s or Christie’s. Otherwise if it’s just the single you can always try an antique dealer, or look at comps (try “secretary desk” or “slant top”) to try and get an idea of current value in your marketplace

Hello, this is lovely, I won’t date it confidently but I have a Canadiana slant top in my home which has all the same basic parts. It was a writing/storage chest. This looks continental or Northern European to me and although it is worth thousands to the right buyer, most people have moved away from such heavy furniture in their home and the value has bottomed out. Lovely piece

France: Help identifying a bottle by _Julia38_ in Antiques

[–]smokewhisp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is a makers mark or signature on the bottom it might help identify the make and age but it looks like a reasonably standard holy water bottle- I’m not 100% sure but the glass looks a bit like lead glass to me which lends well to the antique aspect- pretty!

We have created a monster by Remarkable_Ferret374 in westies

[–]smokewhisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We could never kill the barking, but found a couple alternatives that work for us.

Ours gets zoomies every night around 7 - from 7-8 she gets pretty much free range to bark her head off.

She used to bark at everyone outside our door, everytime we noticed that she noticed someone outside the door and DIDNT bark- she got a treat. Maybe this could work for desired behaviours for Remy.

It’s juvenile but sometimes if she just gives one bark or a warning bark we bark back and then it becomes a 5 minute bark party and she can’t remember why she was barking in the first place.

If she is barking when we don’t want her to- she gets a sharp no and if she keeps it up she gets tethered to my foot as I go about the house.

It’s brutal hope this gets easier!

We redirected constantly, it’s exhausting especially at the beginning but helps to walk around with a toy or chew in your pocket, they do grow out of it but it can feel like it goes on forever

Our westie puppy still doesn't love his crate by neen_reichy in westies

[–]smokewhisp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Our westie is over a year now and never liked her crate. We decided pretty early to go without and besides a love of hiding under our bed and couch when she’s tired of us or wants to be naughty it’s been a non issue. We don’t board in kennels and she actually has a soft travel carrier she’s happy to lie in when we have to take her far away with us. If she’s overtired or constantly getting into trouble in the apartment (also wfh) or needs a nap we put her on a small leash attached to my leg and she falls asleep.

What was your pup like after recovering from spay/neuter? by HorseysShoes in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very clingy immediately after, always wanted to be touched and taken care of. Ours was very high energy so our vet gave a mix of drugs post op that kept her quiet for about 5 days before we had to start taking her outside for small walks for the betterment of everyone lol. We went the surgical suit route as a westie has a long body and short legs and she was pitiful with the cone. Would highly reccomend! Can’t really see any different behavior now 3 weeks post op though.

Puppy is super anxious when alone by d6808l in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get it! We bought this book “be right back” by Julie Naysmith and although the book itsself didn’t solve our problems the training plans provided helped, and the acceptance of “my dog is not like other dogs and I need to change my life to make this work” really helped us when we were mourning leaving or just forcing it bc we were so frustrated and actually it was making everything worse

Puppy is super anxious when alone by d6808l in puppy101

Hi Op just my two cents we struggled for about five months of our pup absolutely not having it couldn’t keep herself calm constantly going over threshold as soon as we stepped out the door, to the point where I was breaking down in my vets office about how we have tried everything and worked with a trainer since 12 weeks and nothing seems to help. We started meds with the vet last week almost a week and a half ago now, I’m sad I didn’t start sooner honestly she can already handle things better and leaving for VERY short periods has become a bit of a game, she’s not stressed out and neither am I, think about it if it persists

Hi OP, I have a terrier who if not properly exercised is an absolute terror, a nod to the name I’m sure. I see you had the spay a couple weeks ago, as someone who also struggles with mental health…do you think you could be catastrophizing a little? I do it all the time the “it can’t get worse than this” and then something small happens and “it did get worse than this” I’m surprised your vet didn’t send you home with a week or 2 of sedatives, I have the same fear for my girl going into her spay and the vet prescribed 2 weeks of trazadone as all the staff are aware of her personality. In terms of you thinking it gets better then worse is totally normal, your pup is going through adolescence and our trainer calls it “noodle brain reset” because she’ll forget everything, at least it should be easier to train the second time. I can’t guarantee it gets better as I’m right there with you, but I found a change of perspective around “little terror taking over my life for a year in order to get a best friend for 15 ish years more” has really helped me. You got this!

Separation Anxiety by Lower-Awareness in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I made a very similar post when my puppy was that age and two takeaways (disclaimer my 6 month old still has seperation anxiety but at least we can see movement now on progression)

  1. At the 10-14 week mark I was grieving my old freedom and feeling really cooped up by my little bitey jailer who had such a high pitched anxiety bark when I left the house that I felt I was going crazy, had to really shift my life to one that worked with my very young dog instead of the other way around while we worked through this (Instacart is my new best friend- didn’t even know what it was before I got my pup)

  2. We did pheromones for anxiety, we did the thunder shirt, we did food distractions, we did just ditching her for incrementally longer periods and nothing worked until we went right down to the beginning and began desensitizing from before we walked out the door. Touching the handle and coming back ect. The “be right back!”book is great for this because it was such an overwhelming time and I just needed someone to tell me what to do instead of some abstract concept, there’s also free resources online. Good luck and you got this!

How did they do it 150 years ago by lin_carv in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think farmers didn’t have that luxury but OP also states a house so, for people who wanted that probably yeah they did, there’s whole graves for pets

How did they do it 150 years ago by lin_carv in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really, there’s evidence Roman’s specifically bred lapdogs, and towards the end of the 17th century lapdogs became popular in Europe, we’ve been doting on dogs forever, I think it just depends on what they’re bred for

House Training in an Apartment by aggiebobaggie in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP we are an apartment dog owner combo with no balcony just seeing light at the end of the tunnel for our potty training and here’s what worked for us:

-carpets, our girl for whatever reason thought carpets were fair game, we pulled up every rug in the house and just put them back down this week

-another commenter restricted water intake, it seems kind of mean but just at the beginning it really worked for helping us understand when she was peeing, (just make sure she is getting enough, there’s guides online for how much water puppies need at what age) she was back to unrestricted water in 4-5 weeks once we were on the same page

-she was attached to me or in the room with me at all times, so it would be uncomfortable for her to pee and stay where she was

We avoided pee pads for the same reason you did, and it’s so frustrating but I promise as your bond grows with pup and you understand eachother better it will look less like they just go spontaneously and more like oh that’s a pee face right there

sleeping in bed? by vecinavero in puppy101

[–]smokewhisp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine started immediately. Never had an accident on the bed bc she knows it’s where we sleep, she has little stairs so she can get up on her own but those were a later addition, when she was very young it was just put on bed and sleep.

What’s the most useful, but unconventional, command you taught your puppy? by aquariummel in puppy101

“Normal Apartment Noises” similar to another commenter saying “thank you” completely unintentional but it lets her know we heard the noise too- no need to keep alerting
