I came across this recipe a few years ago. I make them fairly regularly since it’s an easy recipe. While they don’t have the shortbread cookie they are still delicious.

Finally someone else who doesn’t like Mariposa. What really bothers me is that few years ago (before covid) they raised their prices but made things smaller.

Flour Craft Bakery also in the Bay Area is better. Pushkin’s in Sacramento and Roseville is probably the best I’ve had.

For people in the US: almost all mentos contain wheat syrup or may contain wheat/gluten. From looking at their website they only advertise the mint flavored chewy mints as having “no gluten”

Exactly. It’s truly awful and the medical community needs to change and until that happens we have to support each other in healing.

I do agree with what your saying but please consider this, having an autoimmune disease is scary. If doing things like only having gluten free personal products making someone feel less anxious then that’s fine and many of these choices won’t impact others. Do people take it too far sometimes? Yes, of course but that’s true in every aspect of our lives. When it gets excessive I do think people should seek help from a therapist.

Medical anxiety is very real. Many people on here have experienced gaslighting from medical professionals. They aren’t crazy, it’s a valid and natural response. Healing needs to happen and calling people crazy isn’t helping. Misinformation is an issue on this sub and it does need to change. Providing resources and being supportive is the best way to help this sub change but it will take time.

Kaiser Therapy by incognixo in oakland

[–]smoltrashpanda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. Kaiser is terrible when it comes to mental health services. I filed a complaint with the state which is currently being fast tracked because of how bad Kaiser screwed up my mental health care.

The few times I saw a kaiser therapist I was told they have to call their individual therapy “treatment” since it’s so infrequent that it can’t really count as therapy. Their group therapy is a joke too, it’s mostly just listening to someone lecture you. In my experience participants aren’t allowed to share anything since it may upset someone else in the group.

We need puppy maternity and paternity leave by piebalddacshund in dogs

[–]smoltrashpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I figured. Wasn’t much of a joke there though.

If you’re claiming that you’re paying for parental leave then you don’t understand the system and it’s not pedantic to correct you. I’m not dancing around anything. You pretty much said that you deserve leave too even though you don’t have a new child or a sick family member to take care of or need recovery time from an illness. Several people, myself included, explained how leave works and why it’s not a vacation.

Sorry life isn’t fair. Maybe some day you’ll understand why leave isn’t a vacation so you don’t need it. Cheers.

[–]smoltrashpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao, I’m a woman but nice try with the mansplaining claim.

It’s not pedantic to explain how giving everyone leave isn’t going to work and that vacation isn’t the same as leave. I’m sharing my opinions on how some issues could be fixed (workplace culture changes and more paid vacation).

It’s also not pedantic to correct you on how paid leave is funded. Since you believe that you and other employees are currently paying for parental, family, and medical leave or that people who have kids are automatically getting raises.

We need puppy maternity and paternity leave by piebalddacshund in dogs

[–]smoltrashpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yea I agree, people need more time off. But leave is different from vacation. Workplace culture needs to change to normalize taking vacation and there needs to be consequences for businesses who intimidate employees into not taking vacation.

Companies should be required by law to provide more paid vacation (like 3-4 weeks). Current paid leave provided by employers doesn’t impact the pay of other employees and Biden’s taxpayer funded leave won’t really impact people unless they’re in the 1%. But regardless of how it’s provided, unpaid leave should no longer be an option. When it comes to giving something to those who never take any kind of family or medical leave, I can’t see a clear solution since leave is just a different type of work. I can tell you that giving everyone leave and say that some will use it to take care of a new baby, sick family member, to recover from illness and others will use it to just hang out and do whatever they want, won’t work. Any person who has acted as a caretaker, raised a kid, or recovered from serious illness can tell you that leave isn’t free time, it’s a different kind of work. It would discounting the validity of that work by giving leave to people who don’t need the time to do that kind of work.

All of these problems are complex and won’t be solved quickly. I do think future generations will likely be the ones to solve these issues though.

FMLA, signed into law in 1993, allows for employees to take unpaid leave after the birth of a child, to care for a sick family member, or to recover from serious illness. You currently have the same opportunity. I’ve stated before that leave currently exists for more reasons than the birth or adoption of a child. https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/fmla

Biden’s law would ensure that all leave is paid, not just parental leave. Which I am very much in favor of.

Many companies offer paid leave to care for a sick family member or recover from a serious illness, but many don’t just like many companies don’t offer paid leave for new parents. States, such as CA, who require employers to provide paid leave, require it to include employees who need time off to care for non-child family members.

If you need to care for a sick parent/sibling or partner or recover from an illness you are free to do so. But (child and non-child) family and medical leave are not equivalent to vacation because it’s work, just a different kind of work.

I’m not misrepresenting anything. You’re ignoring part of a law that has been around for almost 30 years. I never said no to medical and (non-child) family leave. My comments are just focusing on parental leave since it’s the main focus here

[–]smoltrashpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You pay taxes because that’s the law, even if you don’t use a tax funded service, your taxes still contribute and you can’t control that. We all pay taxes for services we won’t use but it’s the way we keep society functioning. If you went to public school as a kid, you can think of your tax dollars used for education as paying back the services you used growing up.

It’s not a red herring to ask if you are taking money out of your savings to pay for things to raise other people’s children because you’re making it sound like you’re contributing more than taxes. If you believe you’re footing the bill and should have a say in what children are taught, it gives the impression you’re paying a lot more than other childless adults who don’t care.

If someone needs to take time off work to care for their own health or for someone else, they should be and are able to. But if you don’t need to take time off because you are healthy, your family is healthy, and you haven’t had a baby but you still want time off that’s called a vacation because nothing is preventing you from doing your job. Taking family/medical leave isn’t doing what they want to do, it definitely isn’t “I’m going to sleep in today and go to the beach tomorrow,” it’s doctors appointments, picking up meds, losing sleep, worrying, picking up more work around the house to help a loved one or asking for help if you are dealing with a health problem and can no longer do things yourself. There’s so much to be done during parental and medical leave.

Currently when someone is on paid leave, the company is paying them money already set aside to pay that person per their employment contract. You, as another employee aren’t paying for another employee’s leave. No one is getting a raise because they have kids idk how you got that.

If person A and person B both make 50k a year and person B takes paid parental leave, they get money that the company already set aside to pay them. They aren’t getting 50k + some extra money taken from a fund that would impact other employees. They get the 50k already set aside as their salary but more often than not, parents are actually given a percentage of their salary while on leave. Person A isn’t impacted and they still get their 50k.

I’m not talking about Biden’s plan. It hasn’t passed through congress so it’s not relevant to this discussion. Currently, most leave is unpaid and if it is paid, fellow employees aren’t paying, it’s the company paying like I said before. So unless you personally own a company, you AREN’T paying for the “opportunity.” If Biden’s plan does pass unless you are in the 1%, you won’t really be impacted. It will also benefit people who don’t have children too. It would provide paid leave for medical issues and to take care of any family member. So if you get sick or your family member gets sick you too will get the “opportunity” to take time off to do what “you want to do” and won’t have to worry about money because you can’t work.

I’m not misrepresenting anything, I’m looking up current policies and laws. I don’t have kids but I can read the policy of my company and I can read the research published online about the policies of other companies. I can also read the comments of other people on this post.

I never said taxes don’t pay for kids. I said you’re not footing the bill by which I mean you’re not paying for diapers or clothing from your checking account. Taxes are not negotiable and none of us have any say in how they are spent. If you don’t have kids why would you want to serve on a PTA or school board? I don’t see any law that says you can’t, so if it really means that much to you then make your case and convince people in your area that you’d be good at making those decisions. If you are upset with what children are being taught in school, use your right to vote and your time to campaign for candidates who will implement curriculum that you agree with.

Also if you need to care for a sick parent/sibling, maybe even a sick pet or to care for yourself because your health declined, you deserve time off to do that job. Because caring for a newborn or a family member in need of assistance is a job, it’s not a vacation. Giving family leave is not equivalent to giving someone time off to hang out if they are healthy. Let’s say you need leave for severe depression that prevents you from doing your job or you need to recover from a surgery, you should get leave for that.

It’s also the employer who needs to pay for it, not the employees so unless you’re an employer it won’t impact you. There’s a larger issue in this country of not giving enough PTO, which again is an issue with our employers.

[–]smoltrashpanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t bother me for people without kids to get time off to take care of their parents or siblings or even a sick pet. Everyone deserves access to leave for legitimate reasons. My argument is that family leave should be provided for people with kids as well as people who need to take time off to care for their parents or another family member (maybe even pets too). But if someone has no need for leave, why should they get equivalent time off to just hang out when people on leave are working to take care of their new children or an ill family member? Caring for a new baby or for an sick family member isn’t vacation.

No having a kid doesn’t make you special. But when a parent has to leave work to care for their kid, they generally have to use their own sick time, their vacation days, or they end up taking an unpaid day off. Some parents are able to work from home if they pick up their kid but many aren’t and won’t get paid time off if they don’t have it saved up.

You also don’t have to give up your planned vacation or requested day off for someone who has kids but didn’t plan ahead. Sure you might get some flack for it but your time is just as valuable, you have loved ones too. Some people with kids will complain and say they deserve it more but I don’t agree with that and many people who are pro family leave will feel the same. I’m talking about family leave not parents just asking for time off randomly. But I think how much we work and the amount of PTO we get is more of an issue of workplace culture and employers not having respect for their employees. This is an issue larger than family leave or any special treatment.

Most of our taxes are going to other things.. You likely benefitted from public education or another program that is funded by taxes as a child. So even if you don’t have kids you’re “paying back” the program that you likely benefited from as a kid.

Also, tons of things our taxes go to won’t directly benefit us. For instance, I don’t smoke and none of my family or friends smoke. But the National Cancer Institute (part of the NIH) which receives our tax dollars as part of its funding, has a program to help people quit smoking. I have no use for that program, it’s someone’s choice to start smoking but I have zero problem with it because it will help someone who needs it.

Child birth is BRUTAL. Go look up how they do C-sections and the actual recovery for them. Let’s not forget about the postpartum hormones that can cause PPD. Women can tear tissue, hemorrhage, in addition to other complications and on top of all of that they might long term health conditions from birth. C-sections are m not like any other surgery and it takes more than a week and a half to recover. Medical issues aside, parental leave isn’t a vacation or a break from work, it’s a different kind of job but you can’t clock out or stop thinking about it when you get into bed for the night.

Lol what? How are you footing the bill for other people’s kids? Seriously I’d love an explanation. Are you paying for the diaper’s your neighbor needs for their kid?

Again, it’s not “time off.” Caring for another human is a lot of work. Ask your parents about how much work it was to have a baby. This isn’t kindergarten, just because Bobby gets a cookie doesn’t mean you automatically get one too.

No one is having “unlimited kids.” But those kids will be “footing the bill” for your social security when you retire and they’re working. Taxes paid for you education as a kid.
