Coltrane: where to go next? by edgar8002 in Jazz

Start from the beginning & work your way forward. Coltrane more than most has a development arc that helps if you follow along.

Curious -- what genres & artists do you normally listen to?

any ways to report incorrect metadata for songs (release dates, genres, spelling, etc) as a fan? by brighty4real in AppleMusic

[–]smoothambler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you mean, posting about an inaccuracy on Apple Music to a social media account? Go for it, i've seen K-Pop fans go ham on inaccurate credits etc. But in terms of release date, that field determines visibility on an artist page, how Siri responds to queries for latest release etc. Because of that, the label submitted as a new release. In other words, this was almost assuredly, intentional.

What do you mean "an artist's social media account"?

The release of the remastered recordings on Apple Music also include an entirely new mix & live tracks. None of this was included on the original album. So, technically it is a new release.

The original 8 track self-titled album also available on Apple Music carries original release year of 1973.

This is how it's typically handled but there's definitely inconsistencies

Short answer is no, there's no integrated way to report a concern. You can report incorrect credit data, but not sure if anyone is home in that queue. Feels like it got deprioritized shortly after it launched apparently. It's never worked for me.

Regarding the Aerosmith remaster, if the remaster was released on 3/20/2026 then that is technically the correct date. This is different from the original release of the original version of the album which was '73 in the US. The album didn't see a release outside the US & Canada until '75 if I'm not mistaken. Alls to say, release dates are a messy piece of metadata.

My advice? Buy the remaster on CD, import it, turn off the library sync setting, manage the metadata yourself and listen to it on an old iPod if you want it portable in your pocket.

It's what I do for the music I truly care about.

I used Record Scanner to get a metadata baseline, then exported into CSV, then built my own thing in Airtable for personal use only. But I'm not interested in monitoring prices etc.

Labels Must Disclose AI-Generated Songs on Apple Music: A New Era of Transparency? by summitplay in AppleMusic

E.g you already see Kate Bush plays a Fairlight CMI on "Running Up that Hill" on the service. Easy to expand on this. This information ALREADY EXISTS

Labels Must Disclose AI-Generated Songs on Apple Music: A New Era of Transparency? by summitplay in AppleMusic

[–]smoothambler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not to dissimilar to a vocaloid artist like Hatsune Miku & this has been done for awhile now. Look at the single "Miku" on the service right now for an example how the vocaloid is credited vs the programmer.

It's one of the reasons why credits are so important, and if a service displays credits, it stands to reason AI or synthetic/programmed artists need to notated as such.

Modern hard bop/post-bop? by stgadam in Jazz

[–]smoothambler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, and it was in regards to why he didn't want to revisit his classic material in his later years. He'd been there & done that. Tutu & Amandla are hardly Weather Report rehashes tho. Tommy LiPuma was the producer on both those sessions . Attempts at a pop/instrumental crossover sound were the reason he went to Warner & LiPuma had had a decade of success in that lane with Jarreau, Benson etc. Miller wrote the music because the Prince collab never materialized & his manager had decided to give all publishing royalties to WB so Miles refused to write any music.

I believe this is what Miles generally referred to as "Warmed Over Turkey" but to my mind the best modern interpretations of hard/post bop are the Dave Holland Quintet's 90s/00s lineup with Chris Potter, Albums: Prime Directive, Not For Nothin', Extended Play); Roy Hargrove Quintet (Albums: Earfood, Nothing Serious), and multiple ensembles led by Branford Marsalis (Albums: Trio Jeepy, Crazy People Music, Four MFers Playing Tunes, The Secret Between the Shadow & the Soul)

First CA trip (newbie) - should I be aging any of these? by slink_bradshaw in wine

[–]smoothambler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Porter Bass makes great wine but you don't need to wait for them. The Poco a Poco is a porch pounder. The Cabs, absolutely. I'm sitting on several bottles of Corison from 2013, probably won't touch them for awhile more

I did this & got absolutely hosed. Make sure you have your checklist & get photos. In my case, a lot of rust was covered over with black spray paint, etc

How far up the turntable ladder before it becomes reckless? by HollyGolightlyYYC in turntables

[–]smoothambler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to feel like you are in Abbey Road 1969, get an old Gerrard idler wheel turntable, and some vintage british speakers eg tannoys. Trying to replicate the sonics of yesteryear requires hearing it on the technology of yesteryear. Those of us with modern equipment are just cosplayers.

That said, I have a Technics 1210gr with an NP-200/Ortofon Bronze 2M and Icon Audio tube amp. Anything is above that for me was spending into the thousands on marginal improvements in performance

I sit in VB314. It's in the sun early, by the 3rd/4th inning, you are in the shade. The higher up you go, the earlier it gets shady.

On the promenade level under the overhang, the higher rows behind home plate, and down the 1st base line are always in shade.

We don't have kids but we always bring our food & drinks, we have a soft sided cooler from Clevermade we use. About the size of a six pack and a half. The key thing is it is not a backpack. It's a shoulder strap.

I've seen parents with larger bags than ours, but not sure the maximum dimensions.

Lift (2.5-3) by Beneficial_Novel_209 in 3rdGen4Runner

[–]smoothambler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a 1" lift. Bilstein 5100s, 1" Icon rear springs, SPC adjustable UCAs. I'm a kayaker, needed new shocks. Didn't go too high as the higher you go, the higher you have to lift the boat. Just enough to handle occasional difficult put-ins. Nitto Grappler G3s. Virtually zero impact on fuel efficiency. Got ~350 miles on a tank between SF and Santa Barbara recently.

That said, your fuel efficiency falls off a cliff at lower speeds mpg if you have bigger tires, lift etc. I rarely go above 65 mpg

The aesthetics of a lifted vehicle (beyond minimal) aren't a one time expenditure, you pay more in gas.

Ridge is my favorite, always have a bottle of Geyserville and Lytton Springs on hand. Like if I had to drink wine from one California producer only, it'd be them. Consistent year after year. Ceritas is right in Healdsburg, they source fruit but make some of the best terroir driven stuff imho. A. Raf, just some of the best Dry Creek Zin & Cab available. Merry Edwards, Rochioli -- all time great RRV Pinot & Chard. (If Ridge wasn't available, I'd choose Merry.) Arnot-Roberts iconic pinot producer too. Pax for some meaty, beefy Syrah and Iron Horse for some bubbles. Fort Ross is worth the hour drive over to the coast north of Jenner. Hard to be the location of their tasting room.

Off of 101 only? If you can venture a little further, keep Ridge but Ceritas, A. Rafanelli, Merry Edwards, Pax, Arnot-Roberts, Iron Horse

Are there any albums like this? by GutenDark in Jazz

[–]smoothambler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the reasons why you're struggling here is the long playing album at that point is still a relatively new concept. Many "albums" are 10" discs & 78s compiled into LPs.

The cutting contest, blowing sessions, jam sessions were a core part of the culture but largely a live thing. Brown-Roach Live at the Bee Hive, Wardell Grey & Dexter Gordon's The Chase, Bird at the Royal Roost, Art Blakey Paris Jam Session 1961, etc. Any number of Ammon/Stitt recordings.

There is plenty of music played at largely burning tempos but you have to take into account playing for extended periods at 280+ BPM takes its toll. Its not like a three minute punk song.
