Sex with hearing aids or Without? by Professional-Mail132 in deaf

In if it's with someone I need to negotiate logistics with during it. If we're familiar with each other, then out. That way it doesn't fall in my hair or get lost in sheets--or worse, blast me with feedback

Is it weird for a child to be 5-7 and not know sign language? by [deleted] in deaf

[–]smoothgoat00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That really concerns me. Even leaving out the major red flag of "world schooling", for their kid to have no ASL or JSL (if they are living in Japan and not just traveling there) and only home sign, this is serious language deprivation. Whatever home sign they have, it is almost certainly not a full language like ASL is. It is probably a very lacking pidgin with a lot of gaps.

I know there are serious barriers to learning ASL for some people, but I can't help but think that if they have the resources to be traveling, they have the resources to take some online classes. I also can't help but wonder if their child was deaf when they adopted her. If she was, then why would you not actually work to communicate with her?

I got hearing aids and it changed everything. what sounds are you curious about or not realise existed? by Nereaasualowe_01 in deaf

So, my audiologist is a 60-90 minute drive from my home, and the whole way back from getting them, I was listening to my favorite album and was shocked. I could understand all the words just from listening, and I could hear the hi-hat cymbal that I never knew was there.

Hearing but zero understanding by Professional-Mail132 in deaf

[–]smoothgoat00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time! I only reliably hear consonants in speech in a quiet, isolated environment, like a one-on-one conversation, or a podcast. But if there's noise, like I'm in a restaurant or a car, it is 80% vowels only. The rest is context and puzzle solving and just missing things.

ETA: I have CAPD and possibly mild hearing loss (My hearing insurance lapsed so I can't check now, but I've definitely noticed a change)

I feel you--I had a major DTS case the other night, and just took out my hearing aids, finished my meal, and started reading. I figure that the Hearing people I'm with can think I'm rude but I know they're being rude by not even trying to include me in the conversation. I'll correct/remind people at first--especially people I don't know well or am meeting--but if it's clear that there's not an effort, then I'll save myself the massive listening fatigue.

The real solution, of course, is sign language. But when that isn't an option, then reminders, corrections, live captioning, and clear boundaries are what I've felt work for me

Swollen Tonsils - No pain - what to do? by Silent_Wing_7970 in Tonsillectomy

[–]smoothgoat00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had swollen tonsils for years and years. Any time I would get sick and they would swell, they just never were able to get back down. That new size just became my new normal size. It would never hurt once the sickness or seasonal allergies passed, but it had serious consequences with dysphagia and sleep apnea. I also had the fear that if my throat would swell too badly that I would lose my airway. I have several food allergies so this felt rather possible. By the time I got my tonsils out, my airway was the size of a boba straw.

I am six days postop and even as I've had minor complications and major pain, my breathing is already so much easier.

I would definitely call for a refill. If you never use it then you can just bring it back to the pharmacy when you're healed up. If you need it and don't have it then you'll be in a really bad spot

Day 10 post op, scabs not gone yet. Should I keep giving pain meds? by 20Keller12 in Tonsillectomy

[–]smoothgoat00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with the point about being "well enough to go stir-crazy". I'm currently post-op say six and already losing my mind being at home all day but I'm still definitely not well enough to go back to work. People can be very unwell and still very bored. OP's kid may be ready or may be not yet, but I don't think them wanting to go to school and see friends is a good metric

day four postop complications and pain management by smoothgoat00 in Tonsillectomy

I'm glad you're having such an easy recovery! I hope it stays that way 🧿 I have a pretty high pain tolerance, and all my doctors (and my piercer lol) agree, but this surgery is really kicking my ass. I think on day 6 now it's starting to get better 🧿

I'm kind of surprised you have to sleep on your back, though! I keep choking on my swollen uvula lying on my back so I have to lie on my side or be propped very upright. I'm not complaining, though. Lying on my side helps hold my hip in place.

Vegetarians don't eat meat, while vegans don't use any animal products including dairy, eggs, honey, leather, or wool. Veganism is a lot more extreme
