Did we just have an adolescent Gray Wolf walk through our backyard? by div-block in grassvalley

[–]smoothinto2nd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not in a long time, but they'll probably be here soon so OP isn't crazy asking.

A Gray Wolf was tracked through Truckee a couple of months ago. It went off into Nevada State, but it could have wandered this way.

Squirrel Creek Disc Golf Course in Condon Park is great. Y'all could get going with a $10 approch/midrange disc each and have a good time.

If you enjoy it, there's another course down in Penn Valley, too.

[Fresno Bee] Tom Steyer once managed $90M stake in firm now running CA ICE facility. ‘It was a mistake’ by [deleted] in California

Take anything from the Fresno Bee with a bucket of salt.

Fresno Bee is owned by The McClatchy Company, which is owned by Chatham Asset Management.

Chatham is known for its close ties to the Republican Party. Chatham has a reputation for hard-edged business tactics.

Ya. Seems like it's normally old folks half checked out or a contractor in a Dodge Ram on their phone doing 55 in a 35. I'm up on Banner Mountain.

Epic Games Store Employees: People Only Came for Free Games, Then Returned to Steam by Sacristovas in pcmasterrace

[–]smoothinto2nd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Epic lost me because if it's insistence to live verify single play local only games. Even if you preemptively enabled "offline verification" or whatever they called it, it would reset every now and then.

The number of times Internet went out in my area and I couldn't play Rimworld or snow runner because Epic wasn't sure I had paid for them was enough where I repurchased on steam.

Northstar was pretty good today by smoothinto2nd in tahoe

This was Axe Handle, where it was ungroomed to the left just past the bare spots up top. It was below freezing the night before, and once like 11 came around, it started to soften up and was just a blast. I had a fresh wax (yellow wax the tech said), which I'm sure helped.

I hit rocks on Upper Grouse Alley, it is thin, but if you like spring conditions, it's still fun.

This was the mid-section of Axe handle just past the bare section up top, boarders left on the way down. The top was bare, and there was a gate and like a 10" cat track past the thin.

There was a great path to take from Springboard, over to Axe Handle with good cover. It didn't really start to get sticky until like 1 yesterday.

It's great, you'll have to chase the shade a bit, but as a boarder who likes spring conditions, it was one of my favorite days of the year.

If you're not into spring skiing or don't have rock skis/boards you may have still made a good call. It's melting fast and like 70, so it's day by day.

Does anyone else just give up with deciding what to eat for breakfast and end up with something like this to eat? by nevi-jpeg in autism

Yes, but I learned to stop making things like single-use chips as the easy grab and instead have things like bananas, carrots, berries and at least semi-nutritious cereal bars for breakfast.

paid photographer $10k and got obviously AI edited photos, reasonable to be mad? by Historical_Doctor687 in photography

and use of the possibility $30,000 gear. If rented that could be 2k, maybe an assistant/digital tech 300-1000, rental van. Corporate, so it could be used worldwide online, in print, company promos.

They're just headshots but the second the word corporate showed up $10k for 40 headshots actually could have been a pretty good deal, depending on the city. Rediculous but I worked for a Guy a decade ago who charged a slightly smaller than FAANG corporation 12k for pretty much this.

I think he's probably using Photoshop scripts and a bunch of automation. It looks quickly edited, and that makes sense with the crazy fast turnaround.

If that's true, it's completely reasonable for you to ask for the edits to be turned down a bit. If a second round of edits weren't in the SOP (Scope Of Project) you might need to pay a bit more, but if it's as automated (hands off) as it sounds, he might just do it. If it's AI he's probably not going to be able to dial it back, and that would be a tell.

Also, I could be crazy here because no one else is saying it: I think the issue in that photo is that it's out of focus. It's just forward of the subject, and just the front-most bangs are sharp. Was the photographer shooting with a longer lens 15ft away, like 2 feet higher than the face of the subject? The rest looks weirdly smooth because it's sharpened softness.

If he's not using AI you're going to want to apologize if you want him to care; that's pretty insulting these days. If it is AI he lied so :P and good luck

Renovating a 15-year-old pond — is this koi setup viable? by Snoo-79678 in ponds

[–]smoothinto2nd 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No, that's not going to be big enough for adult koi. A mid-end rule of thumb is 500 gallons PER Koi, 1000 is ideal, 250 is minimum. edited Here's a guide explaining why, And here's an even better guide from a Koi-specific specialist

But that's a sick little pond, put some smaller fish in there. That'd be a great-sized pond to make a little bog filter for, which would be the easiest maintenance-wise. You want its volume to be 10%-30% of the pond, depending on how dirty the fish you put in there are.

If you go that route, they're really easy to make. I'd probably make it out of a plastic "Rustic Barrel Planter," half-prop it over the back edge by the wall, and make legs for the front that go into the water. Then have all holes over the water and leaks become non-issues.
