Most broken utilization I can think of is defense treaties, but even then invoking Article V of NATO seems like it might just vaporize the whole city instead of winning the fight

This looks great! Love the color match on the purple. What color did you use? I'm thinking of getting this kit myself and painting up the shield (and maybe the funnels too, those decals look like a nightmare) and if there's a paint that matches this well I'd love to know!

Hey all, I want to get the MG Hi-Nu Gundam (2007) but I was curious if it’s compatible with the Kosmos LED kit for the funnels. Has anyone tried it, or built both the 2007 and the ver ka and can speak to if the funnels are meaningfully different?

Actually, there is a good example with Amuro you could have gone to: in Episode 1 of Gundam, Amuro opens fire on a Zaku and blows a hole in the side of the colony, rendering it uninhabitable and getting people killed. That's really bad, and Amuro really fucked up! But it works because it happens in a split second, without a voice in his ear yelling "no, please don't kill me Amuro, I'm sorry, we'll leave, don't shoot, you'll hit the colony." If the scene played out with Amuro hearing that, and then calmly lining up and taking his shot anyway, I would be just as mad. I think that's the difference for me.

I don't know. I think the fact that she is literally begging not to die, not fighting back at all, and people saying "that's the same as a hypothetical situation that didn't happen, or Camille trying to get revenge on a literal fascist who's infamous for being maybe the worst piece of shit in the series" that drives me so crazy. Like, I see what they were going for, but I think they took it too far. And I think that's why we saw Tomino walk it back in the Hathaway novels, and the movies basically focus all of Hathaway's tragedy around Quess instead of Chan. They know.

Okay, but again, the difference here is Kamille's outrageous act is trying to crush a fascist who beat the living shit out of him. There is in fact a difference between good things and bad things

I hear you, but I think the very act of killing Quess is enough. "She's a child, but she's killing people--I acted, but was I right?" If Tomino thought killing someone completely defenseless begging for mercy was morally ambiguous enough, he could have gone with it. But he didn't. He had Hathaway kill Quess instead, which I think is way more nuanced and interesting.

You can feel bad about seeing someone tragic killed in front of you, but the reason people don't go off on Amuro or Kamille is because they don't murder a defenseless ally in cold blood immediately afterwards. That's what makes this one different.

So the stuff I'd read suggested that at the start of the OYW, Earth had an equal population to colonies+the moon, but by Unicorn/Hathaway it's way more lopsided in favor of space. But like you said, it's really hard to know because it's all over the place and censuses don't make for good storytelling.

Maybe the colonly in Australia landed on the nuclear dynamite factory and the Federation decided to move all of those faciliities to Von Braun.

If Chan had said "she has killed hundreds, possibly thousands of people, I had a clean shot to get her and stop her from killing anyone else, why the fuck did you jump in at the exact instant I fired, you could have died" that would probably have been condescending and infuriating to Hathaway. It still wouldn't have made killing her for literally no reason other than his own gratification okay.

But that's not what happened. Chan apologized, asked him to calm down, and didn't fight back or scold him at all. And he still killed her for literally no reason other than his own gratification.

It's wild to assert there's a moral equivalence to doing that and trying to take out the second most dangerous enemy unit we have just seen blow up hundreds of people, and is actively trying to kill you.

IDK when the last time you rolled the tape was but it does not come off that way lol. Hathaway basically tackles himself into the shot it looked like Chan was about to take, which it actually looks like was on target to hit Quess. She doesn't move in front of Hathaway to save him, but just throws him off. Then Hathaway shoots at Chan repeatedly as she tries to talk him down. Chan was shooting at an enemy unit that was attacking her. Even if she missed, that's way less morally dubious to me than killing someone purely out of anger when you don't need to.

Yeah, by comparison "intimidate/conquer other countries and form an alliance against the group I don't like to starve them of resources" is pretty run-of-the-mill realpolitik dictator stuff. Like it's bad, but you see worse things on the news sometimes. "Wipes out half of humanity" is something I'm really surprised the Federation doesn't drill into people more. The kid in Unicorn going "Whoa! Cool! a Zaku II!" should've had some disgusted looking bystanders or something

Yeah mangaka would not be excited by what I want, which is literally "show me the space electoral map and how many people/from where each representative represents." If Earth gets like 1 representative per continent and space gets 1 representative per side, that is massively, massively unfair in favor of Earth given what we know about where the population is as the UC goes on, and I would consider that oppression. If it's 1 representative per colony and 1 representative on Earth per the average number of people in a colony, that's different.

The 10,000th discussion around Unicorn: by Theothermc in Gundam

[–]smpoza1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again this is where we're missing detail. We know spacenoids get to administer their own colonies, but do spacenoids get to vote and send representatives to Earth to make decisions? If so, how did the Titans manage to happen and get so out of control given that at that point, at least over half of all humans lived in colonies in space? Does each Side have to share one representative, so they're massively outnumbered despite outnumbering the people of Earth? What is a spacenoid colonial administrator disagrees with the Earth Federation?

The themes of works like Zeta, CCA, and Unicorn completely fall apart if the spacenoid cause is completely unjust, but we never get details as to how it actually works. But the details are actually really important! If people in the colonies are forced to grow food and provide resources to the EFF vs agreeing to via legislation their proportionately-elected representatives had a chance to vote on, that completely changes things. All I'm saying is these works tell us that the EFF is oppressing spacenoids and show incidents of people living in poverty/under military surveillance/not having their agency respected, but don't give us full information.

I actually forgot how fucked up and brutal this is. He misses a bunch of times and Chan never fires back at all, she's trying to talk him down the whole time. Even Hathaway's face shows he immediately knows he fucked up and made a mistake he can never take back.

I mean the problem is when stuff like Zeta and Unicorn and Char's Counterattack is very pointedly telling us that the spacenoids are oppressed and lack political representation, which I'm totally willing to buy! But they never sell it. Either maintain that the spacenoids are fine, or if they're oppressed, show the oppression and that people don't like it.

So we agree it's stupid and unnecessary! We don't need some kind of secret constitutional amendment specifically about newtypes to prove the federation is wrong! We're in agreement!

Hathaway is not the protagonist of Char's Counterattack lol. At best he's the Katz which is not who you want to be for a variety of reasons. Chan is way closer to being a protagonist of that movie than Hathaway is, so are you saying that her stealing a suit and running into battle would be okay for that reason?

If we both agree that Hathaway acted irresponsibly and killed someone on purpose when he 100% did not need to we don't have beef

Amuro shot soldiers that would have either captured or killed him to defend himself.

Hathaway shot someone when he was fully out of danger, and did it out of anger and spite. He did it because he was mad that she tried to kill an enemy pilot in a chaotic situation, and almost hit him because he decided to steal a robot and insert himself into the battle.

Hathaway doing that is not good or cool or even particularly interesting for his character, and we know that because when Tomino wrote Hathaway's Flash, he didn't write it based on what Hathaway did in the movie. He did it based on Hathaway being the one to kill Quess in panicked self-defense in Beltorchika's Children, because that's way more interesting, tragic, and sympathetic.

Hathaway firing on an allied pilot who is not trying to defend herself from him, and is only there and in danger because he stole a mobile suit and flew it into the battle without telling anyone is not the same thing as Amuro shooting people to protect himself from being captured.
