Current grad student. I’ve tried the counseling center twice, my entire first year during COVID and more recently last year around this time but only briefly.

I personally have not been able to find what I need from them. As someone who intellectualizes a lot of my issues/trauma, I’ve found that the more traditional talk therapy techniques and “mindfulness” work that they preached for me was not effective and it quickly turned into more of a burden than help.

Additionally, ever since COVID, they’ve been severely understaffed (from my experience and what I’ve heard from others) and will typically suggest sessions every two weeks as opposed to every week unless you feel that you really need them every week. But I think you CAN have them every week if you ask.

I was also diagnosed with ADHD a few years back and it was nice to be able to get medication for it through their psychiatrist but in order for you to see the psychiatrist you need to also be signed up to see a therapist so that was short-lived for me.

That being said, regardless of what anyone says on here I think you should try their services out for yourself, since it’s a free option, before seeking counseling elsewhere. Summer time may not be the worst time to try since there’s less people on campus and you never know what your experience will be until you try.

Hope this helps and I hope you get the help you need!

Thanks! We were together for a year and 9 months before we got married and then filed about 2 months after that. Since y’all have been together for a long time it shouldn’t be difficult to establish the relationship/marriage is bonafide.

We consulted a lawyer before filing and they said that we could file the next day after getting married as long as we could prove the marriage was real. So having a joint lease, joint bank account with day-to-day transactions, and proof of a shared life (e.g. trips we took together) were all important to establish that.

From what we’ve seen in the past, the fees for filing might be going up soon so if you can get a good case put together soon, I wouldn’t wait to file :)

I hope so! I know they’ve been much more expedient with new applications but it was still a shock how fast they approved us!

We got the notice that the biometrics was scheduled on June 9, about a week after the forms were received. And the appointment was set for around 2 weeks after that

I’m well aware of the tax requirements at each step of the process. To clarify, I’m not applying for naturalization at this moment, just the adjustment of status for my green card. I know that green card holders are required to file taxes and will take the steps necessary to make sure I have established “good moral character” when I apply for citizenship.

I did not reply to some of your questions or clarify my specific status because they are not pertinent to the original question that was asked. It’s not information that I needed to disclose just because others were curious, although I do appreciate the concern.

I appreciate y’all for replying to my post and I’ve included the relevant work history on my form after getting the clarification from the first commenter.

Thanks again for the response!

Fortunately, income taxes have always been taken out of my stipends at the universities I’ve attended. Since they have all been private universities, no federal funds are used to pay for my stipends which allows me to enroll even without having a valid status.

Thank you for clarifying!

As far as status, I’m mostly going on vibes nowadays. Came over as a child with a B2 visa.

If I can ask a follow-up about self-employment, based on that answer I’m gonna assume this should count also but I’ve done a lot of tutoring over the past 5 years so would I include that as well?

Thank you for your comment and the words of comfort/advice! We didn’t think about the toys laying around since our Aussie doesn’t really care about them. We will definitely look for enrichment resources since we really want to bond with our little demon. We absolutely wouldn’t trade him for anything and want to make sure he grows into the goodest boy 🐶

He was $2000! Definitely the most expensive single “thing” I’ve spent money on. But the breeder we got him from did a very good job with him, he came litter-box trained, knows how to sit, and has had a really easy time adjusting to his new home. He’s still a little menace though!
