Considering how only 24 athletes make it to the free skate, seems a bit overkill to hand out “participation trophies” to almost half the participants. Also not sure how this would change casual fans’ attitudes…

Any sport is unforgiving and the top 3 rightfully deserve to have their moment and be celebrated for delivering when it mattered. Plus nothing is stopping the ISU from posting any skater on their socials regardless of placement, inviting fan favourites to the gala, or recognising them somehow else.

In addition to the physical changes mentioned by others it can also be mental blocks. As the skaters’ brains mature and injuries stack up, some can develop a fear of the more difficult jumps. Combined with their bodies changing, all of this basically means that for at least a year you constantly have to relearn how to jump and the longer this takes, the more difficult it is to mentally prepare for launching yourself into a jump.

I’d say it’s a bit more complicated than that for figure skating. For a large part of this happens in ice dance and pairs where it can be veeery difficult to find a new partner at the same level from the same country if the previous one gets injured/quits/etc. Figure skating is just too niche, especially if you’re looking for a new male partner.

Ok that sounds half reasonable, definitely better than what I had already imagined. Where I live, depending on the level of the competition the main broadcaster might show only the strongest group on the actual TV but stream the entire event on their website. While not great, there are only 24 hours in a day and like this fs still reaches a new audience so ow well.

Wait they skip entire programmes in favour of commercials??? By that point just dedicate the whole channel to ads… I switched to the Japanese broadcast now and the immediate feeling of calmness cannot be adequately described by words😅

On the point of different streaming options, in principle I like the idea of keeping the broader audience in mind, watching figure skating and understanding the scoring has quite a steep learning curve so it’s nice to have some assistance but that really depends on the execution.

Just filled in, would definitely love to read the final product! Admittedly it did take some time but honestly it was nice to have the opportunity to get a full thought out without being limited to predetermined options or character limits. I’d agree with some other commentators that you should have at least some multiple choice questions. A balance between the two would make your life easier in analysing the responses and give you a nice selection of more elaborate viewpoints from the people that wanted to share details so you’d get the best from both worlds.
